Late last week, reports came out from Mark Stein and James Edwards III of the Athletic that the Detroit Pistons had been monitoring the situation around Marvin Bagley III. Bagley has been largely kept out of the lineup with the Sacramento Kings this season, whether it be the coach’s decision or his own.

Despite the downer that this season (and much of his career so far) has been, there may still be a good reason for the Detroit Pistons to make the call and bring him into the restoration plan of the franchise.

Does a Marvin Bagley III trade make sense for the Detroit Pistons?

Today, we will be looking at what a potential trade for the big man would look like and why it would make sense for the Detroit Pistons to pursue. However, there is certainly one reason that comes to mind without even considering his level of talent.

With Kelly Olynyk out of action for the next six weeks, there are only two big men on the active roster. Isaiah Stewart has been putting in work, but still finds himself in foul trouble more often than his coaches would like. Luka Garza is currently more built for the G-League than for getting consistent minutes for the main team.

Adding another big body to the lineup would help shore up the roster balance in a meaningful way. For the rebuilding Detroit Pistons, the possibility of a Marvin Bagley III trade is intriguing. But is it the correct move for both parties?

First, we will discuss the trade package that would work for both teams, and how it would impact the Pistons. Then, we will make the case for Bagley on the court. Let’s get started.

<div class="details"> <div class="team-name">Kings Get</div> <div class="info">Josh Jackson</div> <div class="info">Frank Jackson</div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <p>Josh Jackson is an expiring contract and fits perfectly what the Sacramento Kings need. He would provide solid scoring on the wing and off the bench for a team hoping to end one of the longest postseason droughts in NBA history.</p> <p>Making the money work requires the Pistons to include another player and, in this case, either Frank Jackson or Trey Lyles would round out the deal. Both these players are not eligible to be traded until December 14, so this would require patience from both parties.</p> <p>Jackson is slowly starting to warm up as a shooter, but with Killian Hayes finding his grove from distance, that is less essential. Some number of second-round picks may need to be exchanged as well, depending on which side ends up with the leverage at the time of the deal.</p> <div class="next-slide slider"> <a class="next-slide-btn" style="background:#222423" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="next-slide-shortcode" href=https://hoopshabit.com/2021/11/15/detroit-pistons-trade-bagley-sense/"#"> <span class="title">Next:</span> The Fit </a> </div><!—pageview_candidate—><hr id="pagebreak"><div id="attachment_433231" class="wp-caption aligncenter"> <img class="size-full wp-image-433231" src=https://hoopshabit.com/2021/11/15/detroit-pistons-trade-bagley-sense/"https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/fetch/c_fill,g_auto,f_auto,h_2133,w_3200/http%3A%2F%2Fhoopshabit.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2Fgetty-images%2F2018%2F08%2F1304383683.jpeg" alt="" width="3200" height="2133" srcset="https://hoopshabit.com/wp-content/uploads/getty-images/2018/08/1304383683.jpeg 3200w, https://hoopshabit.com/wp-content/uploads/getty-images/2018/08/1304383683-768x512.jpeg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 3200px) 100vw, 3200px"><div class="fs-center-img"> <p class="wp-caption-text" style="width:3200px;">(Photo by Nic Antaya/Getty Images)</p> </div> </div> <h2>Does a Marvin Bagley III trade make sense for the Detroit Pistons?: On-court fit</h2> <p>From a statistical standpoint, Bagley is clearly the type of player worth taking a chance on. Over his first three seasons, he has appeared in 118 games (started 52) and posted the following line: 14.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game in just 25.8 minutes.</p> <p>He has a traditional game on the offensive end that could provide a solid complement to Isaiah Stewart if the team paired them together. He would also be able to feast on reserve units, as he has shown to be capable of that in the past.</p> <p>Bagley would provide a lob threat to the Pistons, something they are truly lacking right now. This would add a dynamic to the offense that both Cade Cunningham and Killian Hayes would be able to utilize nightly. Furthermore, adding that threat to the offensive arsenal would help the young blossoming guards to continue to develop.</p> <div class="embed embed-video"><iframe width="500" height="281" src=https://hoopshabit.com/2021/11/15/detroit-pistons-trade-bagley-sense/"https://www.youtube.com/embed/4uap73Iyuzo?feature=oembed%22 frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></div> <p>Health and lack of belief from the coaching staff have been the biggest issue for Bagley so far in his career. He would be entering a situation where he would not have the pressure of being the former number two pick, taken ahead of both Luka Doncic and Trae Young.</p> <p>With the Detroit Pistons, he would be able to start anew, as they have a culture of development and accountability that has already yielded noticeable results. The risk is minimal and the reward could change the future for both the player and the franchise.</p> <div class="fs-shortcode" data-type="StoryLink" data-theme="dark" data-text="3 Pistons players most likely to be traded this season" data-url="https://hoopshabit.com/2021/11/12/detroit-pistons-players-traded/" data-call-to-action="Next"> <div class="story-link-next"> <a class="story-link-next-btn" style="background:#222423" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="story-link-next-shortcode" href=https://hoopshabit.com/2021/11/15/detroit-pistons-trade-bagley-sense/"https://hoopshabit.com/2021/11/12/detroit-pistons-players-traded/"> <span class="call_to_action">Next:</span> 3 Pistons players most likely to be traded this season </a> </div> </div><!—pageview_candidate—>">
