Washington is still under pressure to build a contending team around Beal and this upcoming season could be their last attempt at convincing their stellar guard to stay long-term. Although, Beal will face a $36.4 million player option this summer, and if he decides to decline it and leave the franchise in free agency, Washington will likely trend toward the rebuilding stage.
At the moment, the only point guard on the roster is 33-year-old Ish Smith. The Wizards thought that Spencer Dinwiddie would complete the floor general role last summer, but after an uncomfortable fit, Dinwiddie was traded before the deadline as part of the Porzingis trade with the Dallas Mavericks.
Acquiring Brogdon from Indiana would be a realistic scenario given the Wizards’ current values, salary matching flexibility, and assets. Washington can entice the Pacers with young prospects or draft picks and could use the expiring contracts of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Ish Smith to match salaries.
Brogdon would make sense for a team that’s desperate to win now and clearly needs to fill the void at the point guard position. If Bradley Beal decides to extend his stint with the Washington Wizards, Malcolm Brogdon would be an attainable trade target to accelerate the organization’s win-now approach.
Indiana Pacers currently transitioning into a slim rebuild, the decision-making within the front office should align with the direction of the franchise this offseason. As a result, the Pacers should be willing to offload some of their veteran talents via trade, including guard Malcolm Brogdon.

After years of mediocrity, Indiana is suddenly taking a different approach to constructing its roster, one that’s prioritizing the long-term future over a win-now mentality. It ignited before last season’s trade deadline when All-Star forward Domantas Sabonis was traded to the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2022/05/27/nba-trades-malcolm-brogdon-indiana-pacers/2/"https://hoopshabit.com/western-conference/sacramento-kings/">Sacramento Kings in <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2022/05/27/nba-trades-malcolm-brogdon-indiana-pacers/2/"https://hoopshabit.com/2022/03/12/tyrese-haliburton-domantas-sabonis-trade/">a deal that returned Tyrese Haliburton, a promising 22-year-old guard, and three-point specialist Buddy Hield. Similar moves should be expected to come this summer.

While the Pacers shift their focus to building around Haliburton, Myles Turner, and young talents such as Chris Duarte, Oshae Brissett, Isaiah Jackson, and the sixth-overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the organization part ways with experienced veterans that would help teams that are committed to winning now. Twenty-nine-year-old floor general Malcolm Brogdon would be the first that comes to mind, and there will certainly be interest in his two-way services.

As the Indiana Pacers ponder the idea of trading Malcolm Brogdon this offseason, we take a look at five potential suitors for the veteran guard.

Despite only playing 36 games due to reoccurring injuries this past season, Brogdon <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2022/05/27/nba-trades-malcolm-brogdon-indiana-pacers/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/brogdma01.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener" ref="nofollow">averaged 19.1 points, 5.9 assists, and 5.1 rebounds on 44.8 percent shooting from the floor across 33.5 minutes per game. He’s been a productive contributor each year since entering the league in 2016 when he’s been on the court.

Injuries have been a common concern for Brogdon during his six-year career in the NBA, but he’s proved to be an excellent ball-handler, intelligent facilitator, consistent scorer, and reliable perimeter defender when healthy. The 2016-17 Rookie of the Year would provide value to any team’s backcourt.

The Pacers will surely listen to offers for Brogdon this offseason, especially if they draft another guard such as Purdue’s Jaden Ivey or Kentucky’s Shaedon Sharpe with their upcoming lottery pick.

Let’s dive into five potential suitors that could be interested in acquiring the effective point guard.

Washington Wizards should be looking for an experienced point guard this offseason to pair with star Bradley Beal and recently-acquired big man Kristaps Porzingis. As the organization seeks a return to the playoffs, Malcolm Brogdon could be the answer.

Sacramento Kings. The Kings are aggressively searching for ways to upgrade the roster in an effort to break the team’s streak of 16 consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance, which happens to be an NBA record.

As they hunt for options that can help them leap over the hump, Brogdon would be a beneficial target given his availability, skillset, and fit. The Kings already have a cornerstone point guard in 24-year-old De’Aaron Fox, but Brogdon could complement him as a combo guard that can efficiently score the ball, provide more playmaking, and defend at a high level.

Brogdon also has solid chemistry with star forward Domantas Sabonis from their recent time together in Indiana and formed a productive offensive duo, especially in pick and roll situations, across their partnership.

Sacramento shouldn’t replicate the strategy of the Pacers’ past roster construction, but taking pieces from their former playoff roster and building more off it could be something of interest for them.

The Kings possess future assets and are reportedly willing to shop the fourth-overall pick in this year’s draft for a “win-now veteran.” If they include that pick in a deal for Brogdon, though, it would be way too big of a stretch, and the Pacers would finesse them once again similar to the Haliburton-Sabonis blockbuster deal.

There’s certainly some familiarity within these two front offices. Perhaps the Kings could pursue Brogdon in a sign-and-trade deal involving 25-year-old Donte DiVincenzo, who will be a restricted free agent this offseason.

Malcolm Brogdon would be a realistic trade target for Sacramento, as long as they don’t sacrifice any of their most valuable assets. Since Brogdon is on a hefty contract at $22.6 million per year, the Indiana Pacers could be open to offloading him at a low price for financial and cap space reasoning, which would work out ideally for the Sacramento Kings.

San Antonio Spurs prefer to speed up their rebuilding process, they could become a suitor for Malcolm Brogdon in the trade market this offseason. With head coach Gregg Popovich nearing retirement, the Spurs could be interested in making another playoff run before the legendary coach calls it a career.

The Spurs have some encouraging pieces to build around such as All-Star guard Dejounte Murray, Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, three first-round picks in the 2022 NBA Draft, and a boatload of cap space this summer. Therefore, San Antonio could make assertive moves in this upcoming free agency, draft, and via trade if the organization intends to make an aggressive playoff push next season.

Acquiring Brogdon would form a productive backcourt duo with Murray on both ends of the floor, and he’d also serve as an ideal veteran presence and leader in that locker room. Brogdon would certainly fit the Spurs’ culture and system of Popovich.

San Antonio could offer draft picks or Indiana native and 22-year-old wing Romeo Langford to entice the Pacers in a potential deal while including the $12.1 million expiring contract of Josh Richardson. If the Spurs want to increase their chances at a playoff appearance moving forward, pursuing Malcolm Brogdon could be an intriguing option.

Atlanta Hawks could be preparing for a major shakeup within the roster this offseason and acquiring Malcolm Brogdon could be a step in the process of their summer plans. Following the first-round postseason exit, the Hawks are expected to make significant changes heading into next season.

Outside of rising superstar Trae Young, anyone on Atlanta could be available for trade. After reaching the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021, which was likely this core’s ceiling, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to attempt to switch it up.

The Hawks could use another reliable ball-handler to take some of the load off of Trae Young offensively, and Brogdon would certainly fit into that description. While Brogdon excels as a playmaker and facilitator with the ball in his hands, he can thrive off the ball as well.

The veteran guard can space the floor as a catch-and-shoot threat and create easy buckets with off-ball movement as a cutter. To begin his career, Brogdon flourished on and off the ball with the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2022/05/27/nba-trades-malcolm-brogdon-indiana-pacers/2/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/milwaukee-bucks/">Milwaukee Bucks.

As a result, Brogdon could provide similar value to the Hawks and efficiently co-exist alongside Young in the backcourt. If Atlanta wants to reconstruct the roster this offseason, which should be the plan, Malcolm Brogdon would be a strong trade candidate to pursue.

Utah Jazz could become a trade suitor for Malcolm Brogdon this offseason. The Jazz are another team that could make significant changes to their roster this summer with the drama surrounding the futures of All-Stars Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert as the headline.

Whether Utah parts ways with one or neither of their two stars, the focus of the offseason should be reshaping the supporting cast. It’s highly unlikely that they would part with both, and it seems more likely that they would prefer to keep Mitchell over Gobert unless a trade is requested.

Evidently, the Jazz can’t reach the ultimate goal with the roster that’s currently constructed. Utah must strengthen its rotation, and it starts at the point guard position. Mike Conley struggled this past season and was abysmal during the team’s first-round postseason loss with career-low averages of 9.2 points and 4.8 assists on 33.3 percent shooting and a whopping 20.0 percent from three-point range.

The Jazz should look to move on from the 34-year-old guard and, as they look for a better replacement, Malcolm Brogdon could emerge as a favorable option. Brogdon would be an upgrade over Conley across all aspects on both ends of the floor.

Additionally, Brogdon and Conley earn the same salary at $22.6 million per year, so salary matching in a potential deal would be a simple solution. Utah would have to attach extra assets such as a draft pick or two, and perhaps it could turn into a multi-team trade, but a deal involving a swap between the two experienced point guards is certainly possible.

As the Indiana Pacers listen to trade offers for Malcolm Brogdon, the Utah Jazz are a team to keep an eye on, as they will be looking to improve their roster throughout the offseason.
