The Boston Celtics should not trade for Kevin Durant

One of the headlines that has made its presence known this offseason is the drama and speculation surrounding Kevin Durant and the Brooklyn Nets.

Where is Durant going to end up? Who will take him on? What is the situation right now in Brooklyn? Did Shannon Sharpe’s irreverent hot take of Durant quitting on his team in the playoffs come to fruition? If it’s being thought of, it’s probably being discussed.

Whatever the reason, the reality is, at some point, Durant will end up playing this season. The question is, where? But that’s where the story takes a rather interesting turn.

Among the teams that have been discussed as a possible landing spot for Kevin Durant has been the Boston Celtics, fresh off an NBA Finals loss to Durant’s former team, the Golden State Warriors.

The Boston Celtics should not trade for Kevin Durant

It would not be a bad idea for Kevin Durant to sign with the Celtics if he was a free agent. Of course, Stephen A Smith will go on yet another one of his tirades citing how Durant once again signed with a team that beat him in the playoffs, but it doesn’t matter.

What does matter is the financials and if Boston has to trade for him, as Durant is still on the Nets roster. He’s not a free agent. So, to get him would require a trade, and a large package at that. That is something that Brad Stevens must avoid. There is no need to make that kind of move.

Those who are desperate for that last burst make those kinds of moves. Boston has enough talent to be a formidable team still. Yes, they made it to the Finals last season, but every year brings forth new challenges. It is up to the players on the roster to meet those challenges and live up to expectations.

Boston has enough on their roster to do so, and they recently got Malcolm Brogdon and Danilo Gallinari to fill out their bench. Are they as star-studded as Kevin Durant? Absolutely not. But sometimes, it’s not about the names; it’s about chemistry and cohesion while being compatible with one another and playing off strengths.

Take note, Celtics, you have a strong roster and made some nice moves to help implement new talent. Don’t mortgage the future and potentially damage your depth by making a blockbuster trade for Kevin Durant. He’d be worth the trade, but sometimes, the best moves are those you don’t make.
