The Denver Nuggets boast a rock-solid core, yet they may be a piece away from legitimate title contention. Who could they trade for this summer?
The Denver Nuggets are officially on the right track, completing one of the faster turnarounds in NBA history after narrowly missing the postseason in 2017-18. The squad was poised for home-court advantage in the playoffs for the second straight season when play was suspended.
Nikola Jokic leads the way with 20.2 points, 10.2 rebounds and 6.9 assists per contest this season, shooting 52.8 percent from the field. He’s already quite possibly the best passing big man of all time, and his ability to elevate the play of teammates is a great building block.
Jamal Murray is averaging 18.8 points and 3.9 assists on a career-high 45.5 percent shooting. He’s shown himself to be a lethal second scorer and runs a strong pick-and-roll with Jokic.
Will Barton has bounced back nicely after a disappointing 2018-19 campaign, averaging 15.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists per contest as a Swiss-army knife attacker. Michael Porter Jr. has flashed serious potential if he can find his way into head coach Mike Malone’s rotation.
There’s much to like on this roster, no question. But to compete for the Larry O’Brien trophy in anything other than dark horse fashion, it seems the team might need another piece. After all, opposing Western Conference pairings include: LeBron James–Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard–Paul George, and James Harden–Russell Westbrook.
Denver’s own tandem of Nikola Jokic–Jamal Murray lags behind these superstar duos. The supporting cast of Paul Millsap, Gary Harris, Jerami Grant and Monte Morrris could perhaps swing the pendulum, but no one among this complementary group has been consistent offensively this season.
Beating the Western Conference’s best in a playoff series and reaching the Finals may require Denver to obtain a third star.
And while Michael Porter Jr. could someday fill the role, this might not come anytime soon, as Malone has been tentative to play him.
Could this be the summer Denver finally pulls the trade trigger?

Zach LaVine

As the best player on a poor squad, <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/04/17/denver-nuggets-3-potential-trade-targets/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/lavinza01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Zach LaVine has absolutely exploded in his time with the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/04/17/denver-nuggets-3-potential-trade-targets/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/chicago-bulls/">Chicago Bulls, establishing himself as one of the league’s most electric players.

He’s averaging a monster 25.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game while shooting 45 percent from the field and 38 percent from 3-point range.

LaVine, known for his jaw-dropping athleticism, also blends a nice shot-making ability, creating a strong balance between the outside game and slashing attack. Right away, he would step in as one of Denver’s top scorers, spacing the floor with the deep ball and finishing Jokic dimes with the flush.

His size (6’6”) and athleticism would fit well next to Murray and create one of the league’s most exciting backcourts.

Nonetheless, there are potential problem areas.

Defensively, LaVine has a poor reputation, and he and Murray would likely struggle to contain high-octane opposing guards. LaVine is averaging 1.5 steals per game this season, however, so there’s evidence of some level of effectiveness.

<a class="story-link-related-btn" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="story-link-related-shortcode" href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/04/17/denver-nuggets-3-potential-trade-targets/"https://hoopshabit.com/2020/04/12/the-5-most-iconic-hairstyles-in-the-history-of-the-nba/"> Related Story: The 5 most iconic hairstyles in NBA history

But who would cover the opponent’s top scoring guard, Murray or LaVine? Either way, it’s a matchup most opposing scorers would welcome.

There are also concerns LaVine might suffer from the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/04/17/denver-nuggets-3-potential-trade-targets/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bookede01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Devin Booker phenomenon, as stats can be artificially inflated on a low-octane team. Just because LaVine is averaging over 25 points per game doesn’t mean he’ll carry this production wherever he goes.

If Denver acquires him, it’s important that both parties are on the same page. If LaVine averages closer to 20 points per game and plays well within the offense, this would be a win.

If Denver is interested in LaVine, he’d give their offense a tremendous boost. His multi-faceted scoring would take significant pressure off Jokic and Murray.

What’s more, former Nuggets general manager Arturas Karnisovas is now running Chicago’s front office, so Denver already has the inside track if they want it.

Bradley Beal

Buckle up Nuggets fans, this would be a legitimate superstar acquisition.

Already an established scorer, <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/04/17/denver-nuggets-3-potential-trade-targets/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bealbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 ref="nofollow">Bradey Beal turned on the jets this season with the injury-stricken <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/04/17/denver-nuggets-3-potential-trade-targets/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/washington-wizards/">Washington Wizards, pouring in 30.5 points per contest, which currently ranks second-highest in the NBA.

He’s averaging an impressive 6.1 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game while connecting on 45.5 percent of field goal attempts and 35.3 percent of 3-point tries.

Beal is a professional scorer, widely-respected for his tough shot-making ability and slithery athleticism. He would run a great pick-and-roll with Jokic, as his mid-range game is deadly and he’s a strong finisher above the rim.

Beal is also capable of wrapping things up in the clutch, a premier factor in today’s game.

<a class="story-link-related-btn" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="story-link-related-shortcode" href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/04/17/denver-nuggets-3-potential-trade-targets/"https://hoopshabit.com/2020/04/13/ranking-5-best-nba-star-jerseys/"> Related Story: The 5 best NBA All-Star jerseys in history ranked

This year’s scoring average is probably inflated with the lackluster Wizards, yet he’s currently enjoying his 4th straight campaign with 22 or more points per contest. The man should get buckets anywhere he goes, even if there’s a slight dip.

Defensively, Beal is better than his numbers show, although his height (6’3”) is of concern. The Nuggets have already been criticized for their small backcourt, and this acquisition wouldn’t help here.

Beal will come at a high price, perhaps at the expense of Porter, multiple first-rounders, or even Murray, which should make Denver think carefully. Due to cost, both in salary and trade price, this is the least likely deal to get done.

He’d definitely be a needle-mover, however, as combining Jokic and Beal would give Denver one of the NBA’s best tandems.

Jrue Holiday

Herein lies the best option for the Nuggets.

<a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/04/17/denver-nuggets-3-potential-trade-targets/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/holidjr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Jrue Holiday is a veteran stuck amongst a young, rebuilding <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/04/17/denver-nuggets-3-potential-trade-targets/"https://hoopshabit.com/western-conference/new-orleans-pelicans/">New Orleans Pelicans core, and he’s already been linked to Denver in multiple trade rumors.

He’s widely regarded as one of the game’s best two-way guards, which would be refreshing for this Nuggets’ backcourt, which currently consists of two very one-sided players.

Holiday is averaging 19.6 points 6.9 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game while shooting 45.2 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from deep.

Offensively, he plays well at either guard spot and would be a swell fit next to Murray. Holiday uses his thick build to get to the hoop at will and is a strong playmaker and shooter alike.

It’s easy to imagine a smooth Nuggets attack where either Holiday or Murray run the pick and roll with Jokic. Both are strong enough shooters to space the floor off-ball, and each can capitalize on a defensive mismatch in isolation.

<a class="story-link-related-btn" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="story-link-related-shortcode" href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/04/17/denver-nuggets-3-potential-trade-targets/"https://hoopshabit.com/2020/04/16/3-takeaways-jalen-green-g-league/"> Related Story: 3 takeaways from Jalen Green's move to G-League

On the stopping end, Holiday’s 1.7 steals ranked 9th-best in the league, and he has the strength to contain bigger guards. He’d be taking top defensive assignments on the nightly, as he’s one of the league’s better one-on-one defenders.

Although only 6’3, Holiday is bulky enough to not be considered undersized at either guard spot. However, he does have some injury history, playing under 70 games in six of his 10 seasons leading up to 2019-20.

Holiday likely comes cheaper than Beal, as Denver could possibly snag him without parting with Murray or Porter. New Orleans may require multiple first-rounders or the likes of <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/04/17/denver-nuggets-3-potential-trade-targets/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bolbo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Bol Bol and <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/04/17/denver-nuggets-3-potential-trade-targets/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/doziepj01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">PJ Dozier, however.

Denver should make Holiday their top priority, as he’s a congruent third star with less of an insane salary and trade cost. Although he’s not quite on Beal’s level, his fit with this current Nuggets team would be strong, and he can likely be acquired without sacrificing Murray or Porter.
