NBA Trades: 3-team trade lands Donovan Mitchell on New York Knicks: All teams
So, obviously, the Jazz would do this trade in an attempt to rebuild. But why would the other teams involved partake in a trade like this one?
For the Knicks, who would be trading for Mitchell in this scenario, this deal would help them become competitive. As it stands, they are riding a weird line in the East.
They have enough talent to compete on a game-to-game basis, but not enough to truly compete for a title. In reality, they may even struggle to make the playoffs next year.
By adding a young star to their core, they would cement themselves as one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference. Mitchell, Julius Randle, Jalen Brunson, and RJ Barrett is a solid squad.
The third team in this deal would be the Philadelphia 76ers, as they would stand to benefit from this as well. As will be revealed in the trade, this deal would give them an opportunity to dump some of their unwanted contracts.
In return, they would receive some other bad contracts, but the ones they get are more palatable. Plus, the players they’d receive would still be able to help them compete for a title.

<p><strong>Knicks receive:</strong> Donovan Mitchell</p>
<p><strong>Jazz receive:</strong> Tobias Harris, Obi Toppin, Cam Reddish, Matisse Thybulle, 2023 1st-Round Pick (from NYK, via DAL), 2023 1st-Round Pick (from NYK, via WAS), 2024 1st-Round Pick (via NYK), 2026 1st-Round Pick (via NYK), 2028 1st-Round Pick (via NYK), 2023 2nd-Round Pick (via PHI), 2027 2nd-Round Pick (via PHI), 2029 1st-Round Pick (via PHI)</p>
<p><strong>76ers receive:</strong> Evan Fournier, Bojan Bogdanovic</p>
<p>Wow. So there’s definitely a lot to unpack there.</p>
<p>Let’s start with the elephant in the room. In this trade, the Jazz would be receiving five first-round picks and three second-round picks for Mitchell.</p>
<p>That may seem like a lot for the Knicks to give up, but considering what Gobert got, it’s not completely out of the question. Plus, it would still leave them with firsts in 2023, 2025, and 2027, since they got so many picks at the draft and in other places.</p>
<p>Remember when we said that Ainge loves draft picks? Well, this deal would help him get even more. The Jazz could rebuild through the draft, and down the line, trade the picks for more help.</p>
<p>They’d also get Toppin and Reddish in this deal, both of whom could get some much-needed developmental play time in Utah, where they’d have a lot more freedom.</p>
<p>We’ve already discussed why the Knicks would make this deal, and with the plethora of firsts they have at their disposal, it just makes way too much sense.</p>
<p>Lastly, the 76ers would make this deal because it helps them get off of a bad contract and add two solid players to their roster. Instead of Harris and Thybulle, they’d have two players that can shoot well and, in the case of Fournier, playmake a bit.</p>
