Ranking the top 5 second-round picks from the 2022 NBA Draft: Kennedy Chandler, Memphis Grizzlies
Amid some confusing deals, Tennessee Volunteers point guard Kennedy Chandler made his way to the Memphis Grizzlies. While his six-foot stature has created some concern, Chandler’s skill could make him a steal.
Chandler averaged 13.9 points per game during his lone season in Knoxville. He shot a promising 38.3 percent from three, though a less stellar 60.6 percent from the free-throw line, which is sometimes viewed as a barometer for a player’s true shooting abilities.
The hometown Chandler is a speedy guard and one of the best at going downhill. By some estimations, he was arguably the quickest guard in the entire draft class.
Despite his size, Chandler also gained a reputation as a ferocious defender. He moves around quickly and has the ability to generate steals and start a fast break in the other direction. Chandler averaged 2.2 steals per game as a freshman.
His successful freshman season didn’t lead to Chandler being a first-round pick largely because of his frame. The NBA is a league where guards and wings are getting bigger, ironically leaving less room for smaller players to get a chance – they still exist, though.
The good news is Chandler will never need to shoulder more of the load than he can carry in Memphis since Ja Morant will presumably always be ahead of him on the depth chart. That gives Chandler the chance to develop as a lightning backup option for the Grizzlies.
Chandler’s ceiling in the NBA may be capped by his size, particularly if he can’t translate his shot at the next level, but as a leading guard off the bench, the Grizzlies may have found a long-term contributor in Chandler.

Ranking the top 5 second-round picks from the 2022 NBA Draft: EJ Liddell, New Orleans Pelicans

There was an outside chance EJ Liddell would be taken in the lottery and virtually no chance he was going to fall out of the first round. But the NBA’s trash is the New Orleans Pelicans’ treasure, though, as they picked up the Ohio State Buckeye at No. 41.

Liddell likely slid because of his age. The NBA is always looking for young players who can be developed for a longer period of time, but this sometimes leads to the best prospects being missed.

The 6’7, 243 lb forward was a monster at Ohio State. Last year, he averaged more than 19 points per game, plus 7.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.6 blocks per contest.

Liddell has no issue battling on the inside, banging around with players bigger than him, and using his physicality to his advantage. He can also pop on the outside and knock down shots, having hit 38 percent of his three-point attempts last year.

The forward is not the most athletic player and again, his age is a concern. But his winning pedigree could go a long way for a Pelicans team looking for an infusion of optimism after Zion Williamson’s lost season.

New Orleans is no stranger to a second-round steal – just ask Herb Jones. For the second straight year, the Pelicans might be celebrating someone captured later in the draft.

Ranking the top 5 second-round picks from the 2022 NBA Draft: Christan Koloko, Toronto Raptors

Is there a better fit between draftee and franchise than Christian Koloko and the Toronto Raptors? Didn’t think so.

For starters, it’s worth noting that Masai Ujiri’s efforts in Africa are feeding straight into the franchise at this point. Koloko is from the same city in Cameroon as Pascal Siakam. Toronto is the only international franchise in the NBA and they seem to have the best international scouting department in the league as well.

Koloko is a humongous shot-blocking center, standing nearly 6’11 with a wingspan of 7’ 5.25”. Last year, he averaged 12.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.

The big man really makes his bones, however, on the defensive end. Last year, the Arizona Wildcats big man averaged a staggering 2.8 blocks per game. He had the ability to create momentum swings based on his blocking prowess alone.

The Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year is not stuck in the interior, mind you. He has strong instincts and quick feet, providing an ability to switch on the defensive end. On offense, he’s an easy lob target.

Koloko is not a shooter. He also doesn’t necessarily have the physicality to fight on the inside against some of the bigs he’s likely to see in the division, such as Joel Embiid.

But his versatility fits perfectly in the Raptors’ system. Depending on whether or not Chris Boucher returns, Koloko could make an immediate impact at center.

Ranking the top 5 second-round picks from the 2022 NBA Draft: Josh Minott, Minnesota Timberwolves

Shaedon Sharpe was a lottery pick for the Portland Trail Blazers, despite being a virtual unknown. Josh Minott also carries more than a whiff of mystery about him as he joins the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Minott was part of a Memphis Tigers roster that garnered plenty of discussion last season. Much of the talk centered around Penny Hardaway, Emoni Bates, and Jalen Duren. Minott became an afterthought.

He certainly became an afterthought in the Tigers’ lineup. Minott averaged only a hair more than 14 minutes per game, lost amid the rotation shuffle. That means he’s going to be raw entering the NBA and likely won’t contribute much, if anything at all, during his rookie season.

What Minott lacks in experience, he makes up for in intrigue. He’s tall for a small forward at 6’8 and has the versatility to play up or down a position in the lineup. There’s some sentiment that he may not even be done growing – he’s only 19 years old, after all.

In his limited playing time, Minott only averaged 6.6 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. But he was once considered a potential lottery selection in the draft and the talent is still there.

Minott is purely an upside pick, which is a logical move to make halfway through the second round. It didn’t cost much to reel him in, but if he delivers, it could make the front office and the team look like geniuses.

New Timberwolves personnel honcho Tim Connelly has <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2022/06/29/second-round-2022-nba-draft/2/"https://hoopshabit.com/2022/05/24/tim-connelly-minnesota-timberwolves/" rel="">a great record of finding gems late in the draft – just ask Nikola Jokic. Minott could very well be another one if he develops as hoped.

Ranking the top 5 second-round picks from the 2022 NBA Draft: Kendall Brown, Indiana Pacers

Kendall Brown is a boom-or-bust product. If he busts, the Indiana Pacers lost a late second-round pick in the process. If he booms, the Pacers could have a star on their hands.

Brown is one of the top athletes in the draft class. The 6’8 forward can fly with the best of them, capable of pushing a fast break with his speed in the open court. His athleticism also proves worthwhile on defense, where Brown can battle with the big guys while using his quickness to keep up with the smaller ones.

He wasn’t quite given the opportunity to dominate at the college level, averaging 9.7 points per game. If Baylor ran an offense that was less guard-oriented, however, Brown may have very well shined with his cutting and lobbing abilities.

Like all NBA players, Brown’s success will be predicated on his jump shot, which left much to be desired in Waco. He struggles to get the ball out of his hands quickly and shoot over defenders. He hit 34.1 percent of his threes but didn’t have much confidence in his shot, barely attempting one per game.

Brown is young, though, and there’s time to develop that shot. When combined with his physical tools, Brown has all the makings of a possible star in the NBA. There are other second-round picks from the draft who may hit, but Kendall Brown carries the most promise of them all.
