Can March Madness phenom Doug Edert make it to the NBA?

This year’s March Madness tournament has been full of surprising upsets. Miami and Iowa St. reached the Sweet 16 as 10 and 11 seeds, respectively, and three one seeds are already out of the tournament – Baylor, Gonzaga, and Arizona.

But no Cinderella story has been more surprising, and fun, than the St. Peter’s Peacocks (yes, that is actually their name). The 15-seed has run rampant all the way to the Sweet 16.

They took down the Kentucky Wildcats in the first round and proceeded to beat the Murray State Racers in Round 2. Needless to say, it’s been a great run for the Peacocks.

And with every Cinderella story comes Cinderella – the one player on the fan-favorite team that everyone freaks out over. This year, for St. Peter’s, that player is none other than Doug Edert.

Edert stopped 20 and 13 points off the bench in each of the Peacocks’ first two games, respectively. He’s leading the team in scoring so far and doing it all with the type of swagger that people love.

He’s even made a name for himself off the court, signing a deal with Buffalo Wild Wings in the midst of his team’s amazing run. And why not? The run is capturing the hearts of basketball fans everywhere, so now’s the time to run with it.

But the question most people are probably asking is a crazy one – could Edert make it to the NBA? Considering how small the St. Peter’s program is, this question would be crazy if it weren’t for their tournament run.

And while it may sound insane, maybe there is a place for Edert in the NBA. He’s a small guard, but he’s a great shooter, and teams around the league are always looking for shooters.

Just look at what the Miami Heat did with players like Max Strus, Duncan Robinson, and even Kyle Guy. Who’s to say Edert can’t be the next player in that line of success stories?

So, while the chances of Edert reaching the NBA aren’t very high, it’s not impossible. Maybe he leverages his tournament performance this year into an offer from a bigger school, finds success there, and that’s his pathway to the NBA.

Regardless, just know that basketball fans everywhere will be watching, Doug. And we’re all on your side.
