Kyrie Irving says he will re-sign with Brooklyn Nets this offseason

New York City just lifted their mandates, meaning Kyrie Irving will be allowed to play in home games at Barclays Center. The news couldn’t have come at a better time for the Brooklyn Nets, who are preparing for a playoff run.

Irving was obviously ecstatic when he heard the news, and his teammate Kevin Durant chimed in, saying that it was “about time.” The point guard will now be eligible to play in every arena outside of Toronto.

But that’s not the only news to come out of Brooklyn. According to Irving, he plans to re-sign with the Nets this offseason so he and Durant can continue to grow together.

He told reporters that “there’s no way I’m leaving my man No. 7 anywhere,” obviously in reference to Durant, who dons number seven for the Nets. This could officially mark the start of the Nets’ real run.

Through nearly three years together in Brooklyn, Irving and Durant have only played 35 games together. In those games, though, they have gone 21-14, and that record could get even better now that they’ll be able to play together consistently.

The pair will (in theory) have Ben Simmons alongside them as well, giving the team a much-needed defensive presence to pair with the dynamic duo that dominates the offensive end.

However, fans were quick to poke fun at Irving’s claims of re-signing with the Nets, as he made a very similar promise not too long ago. Needless to say, Boston Celtics fans were the ones pointing out this irony the most.

At the start of the 2018-19 season, Irving stepped onto the TD Garden floor and told fans that, if they would have him, he would love to re-sign in Boston in the coming offseason.

Well, we all know how that worked out. So to see Irving make a similar statement just a few years later is definitely funny, although it feels like this time around will be different.

That 2018-19 Celtics team had a ton of drama surrounding it, and maybe it was for the best that things didn’t work out. But in Brooklyn, Irving is playing with one of his closest friends, who also just happens to be one of the best basketball players to ever live.

So good luck to both Irving and Durant. It seems as though they are going to be playing together for the foreseeable future. Only time will tell how it all works out.
