Minnesota’s outlook after Butler trade
We’ll get to the Philadelphia 76ers’ side of the Jimmy Butler trade in a little, but the Minnesota Timberwolves locker room can rest easy knowing their embattled star has his wish and was traded elsewhere. They may not have received a slew of draft picks and young stars, but they should be content with their return in terms of filling out a team.
The Wolves received Robert Covington on a team-friendly contract and Dario Saric, who has a couple years left on his rookie deal until he reaches restricted free agency. A 2022 second round pick is not major in anyway, but RoCo and Saric give the Wolves an intriguing team, if head coach Tom Thibodeau is willing to deploy a modern offense.
With Jimmy Butler on the team and Andrew Wiggins heavy in the rotation, having a healthy amount of ball movement and shooting was difficult to come by. Partner this with Thibs’ unimaginative playbook and you get an offense that relied heavily on isolation basketball with limited spacing. That changes now.
RoCo and Saric are both solid 3-point shooters, with the latter providing plenty of playmaking and an inside game as well. These two space the floor and increase ball movement, which should lead to a more pleasing offense visually. On the defensive end, RoCo is the prototypical Thibs player as a long, athletic wing that can guard multiple positions and log lots of minutes.
These two, along with rookie Josh Okogie, are a perfect five to play around their franchise cornerstones, Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins. These two have had their development stunted with Butler on the team, but have no excuses now with space everywhere. Saric, in particular, is the perfect complement to KAT with his playmaking and shooting.
This team has been a tough watch this season, outside of the Derrick Rose resurgence. But a trio of new faces, including the pair they received in offloading Butler, should help move Minnesota into the modern era and put their cornerstones at the forefront of their plans.

The timing of this injury is just gut-wrenching.
Philly completes their trio

<a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/13/nba-week-4-recap-caris-levert-injury-jimmy-butler-trade-assessment/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/f/fultzma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Markelle Fultz was supposed to be the final piece to the Philadelphia 76ers’ Big 3. Fultz has struggled with his shooting to say the least, and in trading for Jimmy Butler, his outlook in the Sixers’ triumvirate is bleak. Philly will miss Robert Covington and Dario Saric, but keeping its first round picks and netting Butler and 2017 first round pick <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/13/nba-week-4-recap-caris-levert-injury-jimmy-butler-trade-assessment/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/pattoju01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Justin Patton was a move that had to be done.

Butler’s on-court credentials can’t be questioned. He’s a four-time All-Star, an Olympic Gold Medalist, one of the best defenders in the NBA and has improved his offensive game every season. He’s averaging at least 20 <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/13/nba-week-4-recap-caris-levert-injury-jimmy-butler-trade-assessment/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/butleji01.html" ref="nofollow">points per game for the fifth season running and launches the 76ers back to the top of a competitive Eastern Conference.

His fit with Philly comes down to his willingness to play off-ball with <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/13/nba-week-4-recap-caris-levert-injury-jimmy-butler-trade-assessment/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/e/embiijo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Joel Embiid and <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/13/nba-week-4-recap-caris-levert-injury-jimmy-butler-trade-assessment/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/simmobe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Ben Simmons having the ball so much. There were some spacing concerns with this trade that have floated around NBA Twitter, but Butler has shot 36.1 percent on 3-pointers over the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/13/nba-week-4-recap-caris-levert-injury-jimmy-butler-trade-assessment/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/butleji01.html" ref="nofollow">last three seasons and anybody playing next to <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/13/nba-week-4-recap-caris-levert-injury-jimmy-butler-trade-assessment/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/redicjj01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">J.J. Redick will have the court opened up.

The 76ers are also getting creative their half-court use of Simmons by posting him up and having him see over defenders and read the floor from a position closer to the rim. Embiid is playing at an MVP-level. Adding a consensus top-20 player that improves their defense, gives them a second go-to scorer next to Embiid and fits their win-now vision makes this a great trade for Philly. They also received a project big in Patton who could develop into a sold player and backup for Embiid down the line.

Butler’s off-court behavior has been worrisome with young teammates dating back to his Chicago Bulls days and his giant looming contract extension this summer will cause some caution to people. But this is a move that was needed. It’s an arms race in the NBA and Philadelphia acquired their next weapon. Everybody in Philly is excited about this move and they may not be done dealing this season.

Chandler’s immediate impact

It’s been a strong start for the Los Angeles Lakers newest addition <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/13/nba-week-4-recap-caris-levert-injury-jimmy-butler-trade-assessment/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/chandty01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Tyson Chandler. He’s made an impact in his first three games for his hometown team, <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/13/nba-week-4-recap-caris-levert-injury-jimmy-butler-trade-assessment/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/chandty01.html" ref="nofollow">averaging 8.3 rebounds per game, 4.7 of them on the offensive end, along with 1.3 blocks and 1.0 steals in his short stint with the Lakers.

He was brought to the Lakers to provide stability behind <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/13/nba-week-4-recap-caris-levert-injury-jimmy-butler-trade-assessment/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/mcgeeja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">JaVale McGee and do his part in shoring up a turnstile interior defense. Chandler has done that and then some, posting an outstanding 89.3 <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/13/nba-week-4-recap-caris-levert-injury-jimmy-butler-trade-assessment/2/"https://stats.nba.com/team/1610612747/players-advanced/?sort=DEF_RATING&dir=-1%22>defensive rating. McGee has been great this season, but Chandler has already asserted himself as the closing big man, making key plays in two of the three games he’s played with the Lakers to clinch victories.

His first game in Los Angeles, Chandler did two of his patented tap-out offensive rebounds to help the Lakers drain the clock while holding a one-point lead in the closing minute <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/13/nba-week-4-recap-caris-levert-injury-jimmy-butler-trade-assessment/2/"https://twitter.com/Lakers/status/1060408785062117377">against the Minnesota Timberwolves. He then won the game for the Lakers with a game-saving block at the rim as time expired against the Atlanta Hawks.

The Atlanta Hawks don’t pose the strongest roster by any means, but Young has done a great job of setting up his teammates as of late.

Young has been a mess defensively and an inconsistent shooter, but his offensive game is well-rounded, even with his ability to navigate space and finish in the paint. The Hawks won’t win much, but Young is a League Pass treat every time he’s on the floor.

Games to watch this week

Here are a couple games to zone on this week in the NBA slate.

Philadelphia 76ers @ Orlando Magic — Nov. 14

This is Jimmy Butler’s expected debut for the Philadelphia 76ers. Joel Embiid is always entertaining and don’t sleep on the Orlando Magic. They are a ball moving, 3-point shooting team with a weird cast of veterans.

Toronto Raptors @ Boston Celtics-Nov. 16

The two favorites in the Eastern Conference heading into the season meet for the second time in opposite situations. The Toronto Raptors lost their second game of the season Nov. 12 to the New Orleans Pelicans, but otherwise look like a juggernaut and won the first meeting with Boston, <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/13/nba-week-4-recap-caris-levert-injury-jimmy-butler-trade-assessment/2/"http://www.nba.com/games/20181019/BOSTOR#/video">113-101. The Celtics are 7-6 and struggling to find an offensive identity with new faces being implemented.

Portland Trail Blazers @ Minnesota Timberwolves-Nov. 16

The Portland Trail Blazers are one of the more entertaining teams in the NBA. This expects to be the second game together for the new-look Timberwolves. Two intriguing teams and a potential <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/13/nba-week-4-recap-caris-levert-injury-jimmy-butler-trade-assessment/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/lillada01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Damian Lillard-Derrick Rose duel amps the hype around this game.

Philadelphia 76ers @ Charlotte Hornets-Nov. 17

Enough about the 76ers, but the Charlotte Hornets are a treat to watch. <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/13/nba-week-4-recap-caris-levert-injury-jimmy-butler-trade-assessment/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/walkeke02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Kemba Walkers is awesome. <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/13/nba-week-4-recap-caris-levert-injury-jimmy-butler-trade-assessment/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/parketo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Tony Parker can turn back the clock. <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/13/nba-week-4-recap-caris-levert-injury-jimmy-butler-trade-assessment/2/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bridgmi02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Miles Bridges has a highlight dunk every night.
