The Washington Wizards are 2-8 in their first 10 games of the regular season. Here’s a look at three takeaways from their awful start.
The Washington Wizards are off to another sluggish start and from top to bottom, everything looks bad. Their team defense has been terrible, their chemistry on offense has been terrible and it’s shown in recent results.
On Tuesday night, they fell 119-100 to the Dallas Mavericks, allowing Dallas to snap a six-game losing streak. Washington was outscored 32-22 in the fourth quarter by Dallas, a huge letdown after trimming a 21-point halftime deficit to just nine entering the final frame.
As it stands, the Wizards have lost six of their last seven games and are 2-8 through their first 10 games of 2018-19. They currently rank 14th in the Eastern Conference standings and there’s more than just a coaching issue going on in the locker room. Surprisingly, Dwight Howard hasn’t been the bulk of the issue, either.
John Wall and Bradley Beal have been a dominant backcourt for a while, but in recent games, they’ve turned over a different leaf. When the dust settled on Tuesday night, Washington allowed two 20+ point scorers in rookie Luka Doncic (23 points) and guard Wesley Mathews (22 points).
On their own end, Wall and Beal combined to shoot 3-of-15 from 3-point range despite pouring in 43 points themselves. Kelly Oubre Jr. was also 0-of-5 from behind the arc. Things will need to change in a hurry if the Wizards hope to contend in the East for a playoff spot. Here’s a look at three takeaways from their first 10 games as adjustments need to be made.

3. <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/07/washington-wizards-3-takeaways-first-10-games/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/brooksc01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Scott Brooks‘ job is safe for now

Last week I wrote a piece about Scott Brooks’ <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/07/washington-wizards-3-takeaways-first-10-games/"https://hoopshabit.com/2018/10/29/washington-wizards-scott-brooks-time-running/">time running out, though the team <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/07/washington-wizards-3-takeaways-first-10-games/"https://sports.yahoo.com/sources-wizards-coach-scott-brooks-franchise-support-despite-1-5-start-055650344.html">came out and said the latter. For now, it looks like Brooks is safe, but with a full rotation at his disposal, he needs to make some adjustments.

The last time the Wizards got off to a 2-8 start was during the 2016-17 season, Brooks’ first year as head coach. They would go on to finish that season 49-33, going 29-12 through the months of December, January and February. Three seasons in, Brooks had to adjust to a new rotation and with Dwight Howard missing for the first seven games of this season, depth in the frontcourt was thin.

Despite losing five games in a row, their recent victories have shown them moving to a different beat at full strength. Washington allowed less than 100 points for the first time all season against the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/07/washington-wizards-3-takeaways-first-10-games/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/new-york-knicks/">New York Knicks in its 108-95 victory last Sunday night. The team went back to its old ways on the road against Dallas, however. On the road, Washington is 1-5 this year.

The Wizards aren’t the only team facing obstacles on the road, but Brooks still needs to put them in the best position to win. He’s go role players in <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/07/washington-wizards-3-takeaways-first-10-games/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/satorto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Tomas Satoransky, <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/07/washington-wizards-3-takeaways-first-10-games/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/smithja02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Jason Smith and <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/07/washington-wizards-3-takeaways-first-10-games/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bryanth01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Thomas Bryant. While they may not be full of talent, winning and playing as a good teammate could be their main focus, making them an ultimate priority in the lineup.

2. 3-point shooting is still a weakness

Coming into the season, the Wizards spoke of being an improved 3-point shooting team. So far, that hasn’t been the case. Washington currently ranks 16th in the NBA in 3-pointers made per game (10.6) and 27th in 3-point percentage (31.3 percent). In the loss to Dallas on Tuesday night, Beal, Wall and Oubre combined to shoot 3-for-20 from behind the arc.

The Wizards’ lack of efficiency from 3-point land this season can be mostly attributed to John Wall and <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/07/washington-wizards-3-takeaways-first-10-games/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/greenje02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Jeff Green both shooting below 30 percent from behind the arc through the first 10 contests. Wall is shooting just 28.6 percent from 3-point land on 4.9 attempts per contest. Green is shooting just 16.7 percent from 3-point range on 2.4 attempts per game.

The attempts are certainly there for the Wizards’ core guys but they need to make good on their shots. Luckily, guys like <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/07/washington-wizards-3-takeaways-first-10-games/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/porteot01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Otto Porter Jr. have picked up the slack. He had a solid game against the Mavericks on Tuesday night, finishing with 19 points on 5-of-6 shooting from behind the arc despite the loss.

Porter is shooting 36.8 percent from 3-point range through the first 10 games and has provided the Wiz with instant offense even on their worst nights. They’ll need to be more in sync from a 3-point shooting standpoint going forward, especially if they want to make the playoffs.

1. Team rebounding and defense needs to improve drastically

The Wizards took a concerted effort to play together on the defensive end against the Knicks and it showed as they didn’t allow New York to score 100 points. They went back to their old ways though against the Mavericks on Tuesday night.

From a plus/minus standpoint, all five starters and Kelly Oubre Jr. finished with negative scores. In their victory against the Knicks back on Sunday night, Wall turned in a +24 performance with five steals. Howard was +27 with just 10 points and 10 rebounds. Most of it starts from behind the arc.

On Tuesday night, they allowed Dallas to sink 15 3-pointers. The Knicks made just 5-of-27 (18.5 percent) in the Wizards’ second victory of the year. On the season, opponents are making 12.6 3-pointers per contest against Washington, tied for third-most in the NBA. Then, there are the rebounding woes.

Washington is allowing 11.8 offensive rebounds through 10 games so far, ranking 29th in the league. <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/07/washington-wizards-3-takeaways-first-10-games/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/morrima02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Markieff Morris, Porter and Oubre will need to make concerted efforts to finish out defensive possessions, and that means crashing the boards more. Dallas out-rebounded Washington 49-33 on Tuesday night, with Morris finishing with just one rebound. Oubre had two.

The Wizards still haven’t out-rebounded their opponent in a game this season. As a team, they allow a league-high <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/07/washington-wizards-3-takeaways-first-10-games/"https://stats.nba.com/teams/opponent/?sort=OPP_REB&dir=1%22>51.1 rebounds per game. Washington and the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/07/washington-wizards-3-takeaways-first-10-games/"https://hoopshabit.com/western-conference/minnesota-timberwolves/">Minnesota Timberwolves are the only teams allowing over 50 rebounds per contest in 2018-19. It’s something they have to improve upon collectively given their lack of size in the frontcourt.
<!—pageview_candidate—>">
