Terry Rozier is reportedly unhappy with his role on the Boston Celtics. Here’s three trade ideas for the backup point guard.

Word is starting to spread that the Boston Celtics point guard, Terry Rozier, is starting to get a little disgruntled about his position with the team. The Athletic‘s Shams Charania reported at least seven teams have monitored his situation and his status, while Bill Simmons of The Ringer said he’s upset over his playing time.

So far this season, Rozier is only averaging 7.5 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 22.7 minutes per game, shooting 35.5 percent from the floor. He’s making 39.4 percent of his 3s, but his dwindling numbers further hurt his trade value.

There are a few teams who could upgrade their point guard situation, but the three who need an upgrade the most are the San Antonio Spurs, Orlando Magic and the Phoenix Suns. Simmons lists those three teams as well in his thread of tweets.

Rozier is a restricted free agent at the end of the season and will likely not be back with the team because of money reasons and/or playing time. The only way they’d be able to retain him is if they were able to get a discount on him.

Some teams will have more money to offer him, leaving the Celtics vulnerable if they wished to match the offer sheet. Because it’s known that he’s unhappy with his role and that he’s a restricted free agent, teams will be able to get him at a lower price, though general manager Danny Ainge is denying the reports that Rozier is unhappy.

Whatever the truth is, the team may be better off shopping him around.

Rozier is 24 and has a lot of room left to grow. In 22.7 minutes per game, he’s averaging 7.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 0.8 steals. Last season he really found his niche, but it helped that he was plugged into the starting lineup after Kyrie Irving went down with an injury.

If he was in a starting lineup elsewhere or given more minutes it would be likely that he would flourish more. He’s not having the best start to the season, but maybe a change of scenery can fix that. Here’s a look at three trades for the former Louisville product.

Celtics Get

C - Jakob Poeltl
2019 1st round pick

Why the Celtics say yes:

The Celtics are stuck trying to maneuver their way through the salary cap. A first round pick is valuable for Boston because it’s another cheap contract and a young talented piece, or an asset to include in a blockbuster trade. The Spurs pick will likely be in the late teens-to-early 20s. It’s a weaker draft class this year, but a first round pick is always beneficial.

Adding Poeltl is a cheap option because he’s only making $2.9 million this year and $3.8 million next season. He’s also a low-risk, high-reward type of player. He was drafted with the ninth pick in the 2016 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors.

Maybe Brad Stevens can bring out the best in him. Poeltl was traded this last offseason to the Spurs in a deal that swapped All-Stars <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/08/boston-celtics-3-possible-trade-ideas-terry-rozier/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/derozde01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">DeMar DeRozan and <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/08/boston-celtics-3-possible-trade-ideas-terry-rozier/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/leonaka01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Kawhi Leonard. Poeltl has struggled to find his role with his new team in San Antonio, though he’s been a starter.

He’s only averaged 10.0 minutes per game in six games, marking a career low. Last season he saw 18.6 minutes per game and <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/08/boston-celtics-3-possible-trade-ideas-terry-rozier/"http://www.espn.com/nba/player/stats/_/id/3134908/jakob-poeltl">averaged 6.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.2 blocks a night. If he can grow and build off his sophomore season with the Celtics, that would be an added bonus. The team could certainly use another big man on their roster.

Why the Spurs say yes:

The Spurs would accept this trade because they would like to upgrade their point guard position after losing <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/08/boston-celtics-3-possible-trade-ideas-terry-rozier/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/murrade01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Dejounte Murray to an ACL injury. That left the team with <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/08/boston-celtics-3-possible-trade-ideas-terry-rozier/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/millspa02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Patty Mills and <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/08/boston-celtics-3-possible-trade-ideas-terry-rozier/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/f/forbebr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Bryn Forbes.

The Spurs have yet again shocked the NBA world by starting better than most had anticipated. After losing longtime Spurs <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/08/boston-celtics-3-possible-trade-ideas-terry-rozier/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/parketo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli, it seemingly looked like an end of an era — even more so after the team traded away All-Star Leonard.

Adding Rozier would upgrade their point guard situation. Gregg Popovich would welcome his aggressive play with open arms. He’d also be a great complementary piece with DeRozan and <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/08/boston-celtics-3-possible-trade-ideas-terry-rozier/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/a/aldrila01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">LaMarcus Aldridge. The NBA has seen what a confident player Rozier can be once he’s been given the chance.

If they insert him in the starting lineup, the Spurs may find that he’s the missing piece to locking up a 22nd consecutive playoff birth.

<a class="next-slide-btn" style="background:#222423" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="next-slide-shortcode" href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/08/boston-celtics-3-possible-trade-ideas-terry-rozier/"#"> Next: No. 2
<!—pageview_candidate—>

<img class="size-large wp-image-329785" src=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/08/boston-celtics-3-possible-trade-ideas-terry-rozier/"https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/fetch/c_fill,g_auto,f_auto,h_389,w_590/http%3A%2F%2Fhoopshabit.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2Fgetty-images%2F2018%2F08%2F870713758-850x560.jpeg" alt="" width="590" height="389">

(Photo by Fernando Medina/NBAE via Getty Images)

2.
