Luka Doncic is still the early favorite for the NBA Rookie of the Year award, but who else is making noise in this week’s power rankings?
As the month of December approaches, the NBA Rookie of the Year race is getting interesting in 2018-19. Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Collin Sexton is one rookie that’s come on strong in recent games. Cleveland went 2-2 this past week as they traded veteran Kyle Korver to the Utah Jazz for Alec Burks. With more youth on the way, it’ll be interesting to see how Sexton adjusts.
Duke’s Marvin Bagley III is starting to find his way in the Sacramento Kings rotation again as well. Bagley is averaging 18.7 points and 11.0 rebounds per game across the last three contests and recorded the second double-double of his career this past Saturday against the Golden State Warriors, recording 20 points and a season-high 17 rebounds in 34 minutes of action. As his minutes have gone up, so has his production.
Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic has some competition behind him, but he’s done his best to keep them off his heels. The Mavs have won three games in a row and eight of their last 10 as they continue to roll through their opponents. A playoff bid could be on the horizon with a new international star on the squad.
Bearing all that in mind, here’s a look at the Week 6 NBA Rookie of the Year power rankings.

Last week: 5th (↔)

The Memphis Grizzlies have hit a bit of a rough patch, losing the last three games on their schedule, but it hasn’t stopped big man Jaren Jackson Jr. from producing.

Jackson has put up 13.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.7 blocks and 2.0 assists per game in the past three contests. He’s shooting 60 percent and an efficient 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from 3-point range in that span.

He managed to put up double figures scoring in losses to the<a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/30/nba-rookie-year-power-rankings-week-7-collin-sexton-rises/"https://hoopshabit.com/western-conference/los-angeles-clippers/"> Los Angeles Clippers last Friday and the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/30/nba-rookie-year-power-rankings-week-7-collin-sexton-rises/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/new-york-knicks/">New York Knicks on Sunday, but against the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/30/nba-rookie-year-power-rankings-week-7-collin-sexton-rises/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/toronto-raptors/">Toronto Raptors on Tuesday, he produced just four points and finished with five fouls.

Foul trouble has dampened Jackson’s impact in the rotation, so it will be something to monitor. Jackson racked up a season-high seven blocks and went a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor against the Knicks to finish with 16 points, but also had five fouls in that one as well.

He’ll need to shape up on the defensive end to strengthen the Grizzlies’ frontcourt. On the season, he’s averaging 4.0 fouls per game. As he begins to figure things out, he should become a solid anchor on the defensive end for Memphis.

Last week: 2nd (↓2)

<a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/30/nba-rookie-year-power-rankings-week-7-collin-sexton-rises/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/atlanta-hawks/">Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young has gone into a spiral of sorts in this week’s power rankings. He’s averaging 14.5 points, 5.3 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game across the last four contests for Atlanta, which posted a 2-2 record in that stretch.

Volume shooting hasn’t been his forte this season like it was at the college level. He’s attempting a team-high 14.6 field goals per game in 2018-19, but his load may be too much to bear in the early going.

Young has still struggled with his shot from behind the arc. He’s shooting 35.7 percent from the field and 31 percent from behind the arc across the last four games. On the season, Young is shooting 38.3 percent from the floor and 25.4 percent from 3-point range.

He has managed to offset his shooting woes by distributing the ball more. In a 115-113 victory over the<a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/30/nba-rookie-year-power-rankings-week-7-collin-sexton-rises/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/miami-heat/"> Miami Heat, he registered his seventh double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 assists. Young currently ranks second among rookies in double-doubles this season.

One thing he’ll need to do is limit his turnovers, though. He averaged 4.0 turnovers through this past week and is averaging 3.9 turnovers per contest on the season.

Last week: 3rd (↔)

The <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/30/nba-rookie-year-power-rankings-week-7-collin-sexton-rises/"https://hoopshabit.com/western-conference/phoenix-suns/">Phoenix Suns have gone 1-3 through the past week and Deandre Ayton continues to be a double-double machine. He leads all rookies with 12 double-doubles, including two in the past week.

Despite their 4-17 record, Ayton continues to assert himself on the offensive end. He put up 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists in their upset victory over the<a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/30/nba-rookie-year-power-rankings-week-7-collin-sexton-rises/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/milwaukee-bucks/"> Milwaukee Bucks last Friday. He also notched a season-high 25 points to go along with 13 rebounds and three blocks against the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/30/nba-rookie-year-power-rankings-week-7-collin-sexton-rises/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/detroit-pistons/">Detroit Pistons and big man <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/30/nba-rookie-year-power-rankings-week-7-collin-sexton-rises/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/drumman01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Andre Drummond, although it came in a 118-107 loss.
Booker and Ayton have emerged as solid options on the offensive end and they’re complementing each other well. With Booker on the floor, the duo is generating an offensive rating of 107.8, but they’re also generating a defensive rating of 111.6.

They’ll need to find their balance on the other end, although it seems offense is just as hard to come by for the Suns as the defense has been. They rank 27th in the NBA in points per game (104.1) and 26th in points allowed per game (114.6).

Sexton put up the first double-double of his career with 21 points and 10 rebounds against the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/30/nba-rookie-year-power-rankings-week-7-collin-sexton-rises/"https://hoopshabit.com/western-conference/oklahoma-city-thunder/">Oklahoma City Thunder and fellow point guard <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/30/nba-rookie-year-power-rankings-week-7-collin-sexton-rises/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/westbru01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Russell Westbrook on Wednesday night, although they came in a loss.

On the first night of a back-to-back set last Friday, he produced 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting in a victory over the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/30/nba-rookie-year-power-rankings-week-7-collin-sexton-rises/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/philadelphia-76ers/">Philadelphia 76ers.
Cleveland may be tanking with its current record of 4-16 but the development of Collin Sexton has been interesting to watch. He’s emerged as a star in the making after being selected eighth overall in the 2018 NBA Draft.

Now, he has his eyes set on being the best rookie in this year’s class. His assists numbers are still coming along, as he’s dishing out just 2.5 assists per game, but as a pure scorer, he’s been unstoppable.

1. Luka Doncic, Dallas Mavericks

Last week: 1st (↔)

Luka Doncic continues to make his case as this year’s NBA Rookie of the Year as the Dallas Mavericks are above .500 and 10-9 in the Western Conference standings.

Doncic is putting up 17.5 points, 5.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game in the Mavs’ past two games this week. He put on a show Wednesday night against the Houston Rockets, with 20 points on 3-of-7 shooting to go along with six rebounds and two assists.

Despite playing just 24 minutes of action, Doncic did damage with the playing time he was given. In their victory over the<a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/30/nba-rookie-year-power-rankings-week-7-collin-sexton-rises/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/boston-celtics/"> Boston Celtics, he put up 15 points, eight assists and three steals. In their last two victories, he’s shooting 50 percent from the field and 54.5 percent from 3-point land (6-of-11).
