Despite the 2018-19 season still being young, here are the three best performers for the Orlando Magic so far as they continue trying to improve.
Although the 2018-19 NBA season is less than a month old, already it feels like the Orlando Magic have gone through the ups and downs of an entire season for a rebuilding team.
They slumped to the bottom of the standings, dropping as far as 2-6, before two much-needed wins pushed them back toward the chasing pack in the Eastern Conference. There is also reason to believe the wins could keep coming, which is a promising thought.
Some players have contributed to the moderate success Orlando has had so far this year. There have also been those who have been a hinderance to their growth more than anything else, and we will examine them more closely later in the week.
For now though, it’s time to take a look at three individuals who have excelled in their own ways for the Magic so far. Of course each player is graded differently depending on what their expectations are for the organization, which should be kept in mind.
The most promising takeaway from this entire exercise is that Orlando actually has three players who have performed up to, or even surpassed, their expectations. Given where they were less than a week ago, that in itself is a positive.

It would be great if we could put second-year forward <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/07/orlando-magic-top-3-players-so-far-2018-19-season/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/i/isaacjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Jonathan Isaac in this spot. Certainly some of his play through the first few games of the season warranted it. But like last year, the problem for him has been staying on the court.

Isaac missing time during the preseason with an ankle issue, the same problem that has him missing more games now. <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/07/orlando-magic-top-3-players-so-far-2018-19-season/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/f/fournev01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Evan Fournier also has a case to make this spot, but despite some recent late-game heroics, his style of play continues to rub sections of the fanbase the wrong way.

That’s where Terrence Ross steps in. The swingman has started the year well, with career highs in points (12.3 per game) as well as assists (2.1 per game). Despite being a useful sixth man type off the bench for a Magic outfit that needs that kind of player, he could be making the case to step into a starting role soon.

In the Magic’s two recent wins to get their campaign back on track, he averaged 30.5 minutes per contest (season average 24.8) and was a factor on both ends of the court. At a time when Orlando has come out looking lethargic for some games, the attitude of Ross alone puts him in this spot.

Forward Aaron Gordon is deserving of this spot for a number of reasons, with some solid early numbers: 16.1 points, 8.0 rebounds (career high) and 2.0 assists per game. His Player Efficiency Rating of 15.2 the third-best mark on the team as well.

Still, there is this feeling bubbling away underneath that Gordon could be more assertive and dominant in how he approaches each game. Sometimes it can feel like he is a pedestrian, when much of what Orlando does offensively should be flowing through him.

His improved 3-point shooting last season, which has expanded even further in 2018-19 to 36.2 percent so far, has made using him in all kinds of ways a viable option. Yet in the recent and horrendous loss to the Los Angeles Clippers at home, Gordon took just five shots in 23 minutes. Compare nights like that to the video below and it’s easy to see why he needs to be featured more.

His usage rate of 21.9, the fourth-highest mark on the team is down considerably on the 24.7 rate he posted last year. When he is dialed in however, it is not hard to imagine a time when Gordon tops this list.

He has led the team in scoring in four out of their 10 games so far, with three of those being wins — further proof that the more assertive Gordon is, the better it usually goes for Orlando. It’s been a nice start to the year no doubt, but you get the feeling much more is to come.

Did you really expect anybody else to take this spot? For another year, Nikola Vucevic looks like he is going to lead the Magic in various statistical categories. While that is great for him personally, especially as an unrestricted free agent next summer, it again raises some questions.

For years now, Vucevic has been the Magic’s best player, yet in that span they have won more than 30 games just once. So the concern will always be that, with Vucevic as their best player, they are not destined to go very far.

With that being said, the center now has more help than ever before, with the two players mentioned above, Isaac and Fournier, and also rookie <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/07/orlando-magic-top-3-players-so-far-2018-19-season/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bambamo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Mohamed Bamba for all of his defensive potential.

Of the Magic’s 10 games so far, Vucevic has led the team in scoring four times, rebounds six times and, most impressively of all, assists twice. His PER of 25.9 is not only by far the best mark in Orlando (next-best is Bamba with 16.4), it is also the best number of his career and the 14th-best PER in the entire league.

Given that this is a good indicator of how a player is positively impacting their team out on the court in all areas, that is great news for Vucevic and the Magic (he is ahead of players like <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/07/orlando-magic-top-3-players-so-far-2018-19-season/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/hardeja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">James Harden, <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/07/orlando-magic-top-3-players-so-far-2018-19-season/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/derozde01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">DeMar DeRozan and <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/07/orlando-magic-top-3-players-so-far-2018-19-season/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/westbru01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Russell Westbrook on this list).

Of players who have played more five or more games for the Magic, he also leads them in the following areas;

Points per game: 17.9

Rebounds per game: 10.5

3-point shooting percentage: 52.9 percent

Effective field goal percentage: 57.6 percent

Despite all of these impressive numbers, Vucevic doesn’t even lead Orlando in usage rate (second, 24.9) or minutes per game (third, 29.2). It’s further proof that he is being efficient with all that he brings to the table.

Now that the Magic have recovered from falling to 2-6 with back-to-back wins, we can also say that he has been an integral part of their attempts to get back to .500 again. Nobody is coming close to Vucevic on this list for some time by the looks of things, and it’s easy to see why.
<!—pageview_candidate—>">
