The Orlando Magic are above .500 and playing like a team that can stay above that threshold for some time. Here are three reasons they’ve started so well.
Coming into the 2018-19 season, most fans would have taken your hand off if they had been offered the chance for their Orlando Magic to be above .500 after 17 games. As it has transpired, that is exactly what has happened, with Sunday night’s win over the New York Knicks putting them at 9-8.
There’s no doubt that this is a softer part of their schedule, and the tougher tests await. But in merely watching the Magic play, it is clear that they have a kind of resilience and toughness that we haven’t seen in a long time.
They are no longer an easy out, and have more balance to their roster on both ends of the court as well. It helps when guys like Terrence Ross and Evan Fournier are shooting the lights out, but they’ve been keeping other teams quiet on the defensive end too.
While these positive feelings are sure to be tested as the season progresses, it is also clear that the worst part of their prolonged rebuild is over. They may ultimately fall short of making the playoffs, but the fact they are in contention even at this early stage is promising.
The following are the three main contributing factors that have them above .500 right now and feeling good about themselves. Even better, each one of these three reasons doesn’t look to be going anywhere either, which is great news for the Magic and their fans.

3. They have the right head coach

When former head coach Frank Vogel was fired during the offseason, the general consensus was that it was the right move. His two seasons in charge proved to be uninspiring, with the sharp improvements the organization desired failing to materialize.

In his place came former Charlotte Hornets head coach Steve Clifford, which on the surface appeared to be a fine addition, and nothing else. His tenure with the Hornets, with players like <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/walkeke02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Kemba Walker at his disposal, did little to excite.

While that was the fear when he was announced as the new guy to lead Orlando, the reality couldn’t be further from those initial concerns. Clifford has been the most consistent person for the Magic so far this season.

His rotations have proved to be successful, and he has blended trying to win as many games as possible now with allowing the younger players to grow. Center <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/v/vucevni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Nikola Vucevic has been the offensive focal point, but unlike previous seasons when that was the case, he now has help.

Clifford was right for the Magic to play through him, but he also hasn’t kept rookie <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bambamo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Mohamed Bamba stuck to the bench, giving him 17.7 minutes per game. The players are saying the right things when speaking to the media, and it often revolves around still having work to do whether they win or lose.

Right now coach Clifford is doing a great job of trusting and having the backing of the veterans on the roster, while also allowing the younger players to grow. At a key time in the organization’s rebuild, it seems the front office made the right change with this hiring and it is contributing to their early season success.

2. They have an identity

For so long, the Magic were nothing but a random collection of young players, role players and barely NBA-level players. There was no plan under former general manager Rob Hennigan, with many moves making no sense, even to the casual fans.

Giving up on <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/o/oladivi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Victor Oladipo for a short-term rental of <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/i/ibakase01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Serge Ibaka was a desperation move for Hennigan to try and keep his job, even before you consider how good Oladipo would go on to be.

Trading the draft rights to <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/saricda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Dario Saric for <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/paytoel01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Elfrid Payton is another move that doesn’t get talked about enough for the negative impact it had. The Magic also at one point had the rights to <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/sabondo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Domantas Sabonis, and traded away <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/harrito02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Tobias Harris and <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/harklma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Maurice Harkless.

All of which is to say, once the new front office took over, a roadmap to establishing an identity was created, and we are now seeing the plan begin to come to fruition. The back-to-back lottery selections of forward <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/i/isaacjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Jonathan Isaac and Bamba prioritized length and defensive potential.

<iframe width="500" height="281" src=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"https://www.youtube.com/embed/BwTsZ_7HFQo?feature=oembed%22 frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen>

Right now that is what Orlando is building its team and identity around, and it shows. More than that, the players also know they are becoming known as a defensive unit, and are playing accordingly.

Yes, that was Ross hustling back to block a <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/burketr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Trey Burke effort late in the game the other night in that win over the Knicks. Bamba and Isaac are so disruptive in the paint simply by just being there to alter shots.

Iwundu is playing hard on that end, while <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/simmojo02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Jonathon Simmons always has. Even Vucevic, not exactly known for walling off the rim, has looked more in tune with what the Magic are trying to achieve as a team defensively.

They may be going through a purple patch of improved offensive play recently, fueled by their <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/17/orlando-magic-3-unexpected-stats-promising-start/">willingness to pass the ball, but when the points dry up they will still be competitive defensively. Establishing that identity has been huge for them early on.

1. They have depth

It has taken just as long to get to this point, and you still have to whisper it quietly, but the Magic’s roster right now is a kind of sneaky good. With the aforementioned identity established, the next stage is setting out clearly defined roles for players.

For the longest time that wasn’t possible because Orlando didn’t have very good players. To go back and look at some of the rosters of the last few years (<a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/gordobe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Ben Gordon, <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/marblde01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Devyn Marble and <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/z/zimmest01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Stephen Zimmerman, anyone?), you really get a sense of just how bad things got.

Now, however, the Magic have their best player in Vucevic, who is having a monster season so far. They also have the up-and-coming potential franchise player in Gordon, who is building quietly on his breakout campaign last year.

Ross is the ideal sixth man off the bench, so much so that as of now he should be a top-five candidate to win the award this season. Isaac and Bamba round out the young and intriguing core with Gordon, with the potential of all three being very exciting.

Simmons brings the toughness and veteran leadership, while Fournier is an offensive spark. The need for a long-term point guard still exists, and there could be some quality ones available sooner rather than later that <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/25320702/washington-wizards-include-john-wall-bradley-beal-trade-scenarios">may be worth looking at.

But <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/orlando-magic-3-reasons-theyre-above-500/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/a/augusdj01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">D.J. Augustin has been excellent so far this season as well. Even if and when the Magic move for a floor general to pair with their young core, Augustin absolutely should be kept on the team as a backup. He has been that good.

So to have all of the main roles filled with the appropriate players at this stage has been huge for them. There is a cohesiveness and understanding as to how they fit together, something which hadn’t been the case at any stage during the rebuild before now.

Of course, the Magic should always be open to trades, and they’re not winning a title with what they’ve got right now. But there would be risk attached to making any moves at this stage. They are in a good place at the moment, and the combination of head coach and personnel knowing what is expected of them has gotten them there. Long may being over .500 continue.
<!—pageview_candidate—>">
