With a month gone by in the 2018-19 NBA season, intrigue has been constant and each conference looks slightly open after the favorites have shown some weaknesses.
There’s been a lot of talk around the NBA in recent seasons that the Finals outcome is a foregone conclusion, especially since Kevin Durant left the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Golden State Warriors would inevitably come out of the Western Conference and handle the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers. For four seasons, we saw this matchup with Golden State claiming three of four titles, including the last two in dominating fashion.
Even with LeBron heading to the Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State was the heavy favorite to win its third straight title against whoever came out of the Eastern Conference, most likely the Boston Celtics. But a month into the season, both conferences look as wide open as they’ve been this decade.
The Dubs are undergoing their worst stretch on and off the court since 2015 as Draymond Green and Kevin Durant try to fix their problems. Stephen Curry is already injured and this is the thinnest roster they’ve had in years with a weird mix of undersized guards and too many limited big men. Yes, it’s likely they get it together when Curry returns and run through the NBA to another title. But there is some tension building there, especially as the contenders out West right the ship.
The Eastern Conference is currently the better conference at the top. The Celtics are 9-8 and have offensive and rotation problems, but have too much talent to not figure it out. The Toronto Raptors are awesome and have the most chemistry of the top contenders. The Milwaukee Bucks are an offensive juggernaut with Giannis Antetokounmpo operating in endless space, and the Philadelphia 76ers added Jimmy Butler to partner with their MVP candidate big man.
Point being, the NBA has never been a more attractive product. The players are as skilled as ever, there is talent everywhere and budding stars are shining on the bottom-feeding teams. There has been a midseason trade for a star, an on-court fight, an on-court blow up between two members of the defending champs and crazy scoring numbers in the first month of the season. Having wide open conferences is just the icing on the cake for this NBA season.

Ball movement aplenty in Orlando

The Orlando Magic have been one of the most fun teams in basketball all season. That sentence is not a typo and the furthest thing from it. New head coach Steve Clifford wasn’t known for his ball movement style of offense during his tenure with the Charlotte Hornets, but he has cultivated one of the best passing teams in the NBA a month into his time with the Magic.

They are <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"https://stats.nba.com/teams/traditional/?sort=AST&dir=-1%22>fourth in assists per game (26.2) and <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"https://www.foxsports.com/nba/team-stats?season=2018&category=ASSISTS&group=1&time=0%22>third in assists-to-turnover ratio (1.91). They move the ball beautifully and always make the extra pass. Point guard remains an underwhelming position for them, but <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/a/augusdj01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">D.J. Vuc is one of the last remaining post-move savants and leads the team in scoring with 20.4 points per game. He’s shooting 45.2 percent on 2.8 3-point attempts per game to open up the floor for teammates. With 10.8 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game, Vuc has been an all-around contributor this season. Whether it’s putting opponents in the spin cycle or living in the mid-range, Vucevic has been a treat to watch work.

Grind City lives on

The Memphis Grizzlies are<a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"https://www.nba.com/grizzlies/schedule"> 11-5 and winners of five straight games. This shouldn’t surprise anybody, especially with <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/conlemi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Mike Conley Jr. and <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/gasolma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Marc Gasol being healthy. The way they are winning shouldn’t surprise anybody, as well.

The Grit-N-Grind Grizzlies made their name on being physical and stout on defense. In the highest scoring season in NBA history, the Grizzlies are suffocating on defense once again. They lead the league in <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"https://stats.nba.com/teams/opponent/?sort=OPP_PTS&dir=-1%22>points allowed per game (100.0) and have kept their opponent under 100 points in <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"https://www.nba.com/grizzlies/schedule">eight of 16 games.

Surrounding Conley and Gasol with all-around players that fit a role has always been a recipe for success and this year is no different. <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/macksh01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Shelvin Mack and <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/t/templga01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Garrett Temple have been perfect complementary players. <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/a/anderky01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Kyle Anderson is bringing his San Antonio Spurs IQ to the team, and <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/search/search.fcgi?pid=jacksja01,jacksja02&search=Jaren+Jackson&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Jaren Jackson Jr. has been a top-five rookie in a loaded draft class.

This team can play any style of basketball and has the best defense in the league. As long as Conley and Gasol are healthy, the Memphis Grizzlies will be in the second-tier of Western Conference contenders.

Please give us Philly vs. Charlotte in April

The Nov. 17 chapter of this season series made last week’s games to watch, and once again, these two teams did not disappoint. The Philadelphia 76ers and Charlotte Hornets have met three times this season, with the 76ers claiming all three victories. But each one has been arguably a top-five game of the year so far.

Their first meeting on <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"http://www.espn.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=401070759%22>Oct. 27 finished 105-103 with <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/walkeke02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Kemba Walker’s 37 points falling short to <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/e/embiijo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Joel Embiid’s 27 points. In their second meeting, Philly <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"http://www.espn.com/nba/matchup?gameId=401070849%22>won again on Nov. 9, this time in overtime 133-132 after Charlotte came back from a 15-point halftime deficit, with Kemba (30 points) and Embiid (42 points) dueling once again.

The Nov. 17 contest was the best one yet. Kemba dropped 60 points in a losing effort as Philly won in overtime, <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"http://www.nba.com/games/20181117/PHICHA?ss=watch#/boxscore">122-119. Jimmy Butler made a block on Kemba to keep the score tied, saved the block from falling out of bounds and proceeded to hit the game-winning 3-pointer to give the 76ers the win.

Each game has been amazing with no team having an answer for each other’s star players. Even if Philly is the heavy favorite, this would arguably be the most exciting first round series in the playoffs if it occurred, especially if Kemba continues playing like a top-five point guard (he followed the 60-point game with <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"http://www.espn.com/nba/game?gameId=401070920%22>43 points in a win over the Boston Celtics) and Embiid maintains his MVP-level.

Upcoming games to Watch:

With Thanksgiving and football at the forefront, these are the three best games of the upcoming week.

New Orleans Pelicans @ Philadelphia 76ers — Nov. 21

The two best big men in basketball meet in Philly when <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/davisan02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Anthony Davis and the New Orleans Pelicans take on Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers. These superstar matchups between 5s are few to come by, and this one features two-way beacons for their respective teams.

Oklahoma City Thunder @ Golden State Warriors — Nov. 21

The Western Conference’s hottest team in the Oklahoma City Thunder heads to the Bay to take on the sputtering back-to-back champions in the Golden State Warriors. <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2018/11/20/nba-week-5-recap-struggling-favorites-magic-ball-movement/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/westbru01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Russell Westbrook returns after his wife gave birth to a pair of twin girls, and this matchup against the Warriors is always personal to him.
