Tre Jones vs. Joshua Primo: Who will start at point guard for the Spurs?

Tre Jones embodies the prototypical San Antonio Spurs floor general.

Former Duke point guard Tre Jones is every bit like his older brother, Tyus, and that is perfectly fine. While Tre likely does not space the floor like Primo, it goes without saying that he is the better playmaker by a mile. He was initially misused as more of an off-ball player to start the season but eventually became a traditional backup point guard for the Spurs — ‘traditional’ being the key phrase here.

In his last 30 games, Jones averaged roughly eight points and five assists with less than one turnover in only 22 min per game. He is a steady hand and feels like a vet in a sense despite being only 22 years of age. At worst Tre is a great fill-in starter, a player who can be consistent and run an offense.

Maybe he is just a stand-in until someone takes the mantle. It’s fair to say he doesn’t have as high of a ceiling as players like Primo or rookie Blake Wesley, but he has the ability to hold over the San Antonio Spurs point guard spot until one of two is ready.

San Antonio needs a player to run point who is consistent and has a true feel for being a playmaker. All the numbers and evidence point directly to Tre Jones, who just last year had the second highest assist-to-turnover ratio in the entire league.

Primo’s time might be coming, but he has to make a big jump to overtake the role as the lead playmaker of this team.
