Change is officially in the air with the Boston Celtics. Danny Ainge is no longer in the front office and Brad Stevens is no longer on the bench, although the latter is sticking around as the president of basketball operations. He wasted little time putting his stamp on the franchise in a different way this summer.
Evan Fournier and Kemba Walker are gone. Enes Kanter and Al Horford are back. Josh Richardson and Dennis Schroder have arrived as well. It’s largely a different team from the one that finished .500 and lost in the first round of the playoffs in 2020-21.
The Boston Celtics continue to revolve around Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, but there is room to grow with the other starters.
The core remains stable for at least another year. As it stands, the franchise revolves around two players: Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Marcus Smart is also part of that core, though he’s a tad older than the other two and likely won’t ever be considered part of a “Big Three.”
Those three players are locked into starting lineup roles on opening night, likely across the point guard-to-small forward positions. The power forward and center positions are slightly more fluid, but will likely invite Horford back into the starting lineup, as well as Robert Williams, who supercharged the team during his brief time as a starter last season.
The Celtics worked hard to build their young core and have made the conference finals in three of the last five years. Last year’s first-round flameout is a sign of concern, though; this year’s starting lineup will need to prove the regression is just a flake.
Here’s how the Celtics’ five starters rank for the coming season.

Boston Celtics starters ranked: 5. PF Al Horford

Al Horford is walking back to Boston with open arms and the city is ready to wrap him in a hug. He may quickly find, however, that a starting spot isn’t guaranteed to be waiting for him.

Horford started every regular-season game he played in for his three Celtics seasons, averaging 13.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game over those years. The last two seasons haven’t been kind to the big man, though.

First, he spent a season with the division rival Philadelphia 76ers, where his numbers began to slide. He averaged 11.9 points and 6.8 rebounds per game, knocking down just 35 percent of his three-pointers. He also blocked less than one shot per game for the first time since his rookie season.

Some of his numbers went up in Oklahoma City, but he was arguably too good of a player for the Thunder’s tank. Ultimately, he was removed from the lineup and didn’t play a game for the team after March 24.

On the plus side, that means Horford should be well rested for this season. Still, the veteran big man isn’t getting any younger, turning 35 years old at the end of last season. Expanding his range extended his career, but the twilight is near.

He’ll be able to bring some versatility to the court and rebuild his previous chemistry with most of the other starters. Horford should fit well back with the team, but he shouldn’t be expected to play as many minutes as he used to back when he bled green the first time.

Boston Celtics starters ranked: 4. C Robert Williams

It’s fair to say that Robert Williams is probably the least known player among the Celtics’ likely starters. The big man has only started 16 games in his first three seasons. This should be the year he finally breaks through.

Coming off the bench for 75 percent of the team’s games, Williams averaged 8.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, blocking 1.8 shots per contest. The team went 29-23 when he came off the bench. The team was even better when he started, though, going 10-3 in those games.

While Williams’ offensive game is still a work in progress, it’s clear he can become one of the best defensive big men in basketball. His 1.8 blocked shots per game ranked ninth in the NBA. He also finished in the top ten in total blocks, despite missing 20 regular-season games.

Health is the rub with Williams. He has dealt with a significant hip injury in his career and dealt with both knee soreness and turf toe last year. A fully healthy Williams can be a dominant one, but being available doesn’t seem fully guaranteed.

And though Williams can’t shoot threes, he is efficient from two, hitting 72.7 percent of his attempts last season. Get the ball to Williams in the paint and there’s a good chance it ends up in the hoop. His offensive rating last year was 139.

This should be the year Williams emerges as a full-time starter for Boston. Otherwise, the team may need to start looking for its next long-term answer at the position.

Boston Celtics starters ranked: 3. PG Marcus Smart

Marcus Smart has always been slotted into a backup role behind a more prominent point guard in front of him. Rajon Rondo. Isaiah Thomas. Kyrie Irving. Kemba Walker.

No longer will there be anyone to block Smart or cover up his mistakes. The Celtics are getting the full Marcus Smart experience, for better or worse – and Brad Stevens is trusting it will be the former.

Last year was not the best for Smart. He scored a career-high 13.1 points per game, but struggled from three, hitting 33 percent. His assists also hit a best of 5.7 per game, but his rebounds and steals were both caught slipping.

While the steals didn’t drop to a ridiculous level – 1.5 per game – it’s an important part of Smart’s game and he’ll aim to get back to it this year. His 2.2 steal percentage was his worst in several years and one of the only times he didn’t rank in the top 15 in the league in the category (full disclosure, he still ranked in the top 20).

Despite some noticeable warts in his game, Smart is a solid player. He didn’t just receive a four-year, $77 million extension this offseason for the sake of continuity – Smart earned that extension and he should be able to seize the starting role he held for all but three of his regular-season games last year.

If he struggles, however, competition lurks. Dennis Schroder signed a one-year deal with the team and will be eager to earn a bigger contract somewhere at the end of the year, so he’ll be ready to step in if Smart falters.

Boston Celtics starters ranked: 2. SG Jaylen Brown

On many teams, Jaylen Brown would be the alpha. Alas, he’ll always be playing second-fiddle in Boston. It’s a good problem for the Celtics to have, as Brown emerged last year as an All-Star for the first time.

Brown averaged a career-high 24.7 points per game last year. He also grabbed 6.0 rebounds per game and showed his best passing proficiency yet, boosting his assist total to 3.4 per game. Brown also knocked down 39.7 percent of his threes, the best he’s ever shot from distance.

Perhaps most impressive about Brown’s performance last year is that the team put more weight on him than ever before to succeed and he met the moment. Brown averaged 34.5 minutes per game. His 29.7 usage percentage ranked in the NBA’s top 20 for the first time in his career.

The season didn’t end the way the Celtics – or Brown – would’ve hoped. The shooting guard wasn’t available for the first-round series with the Nets after he tore a ligament in his left wrist, ending his season. He has been cleared for training camp and is expected to be ready to go for the regular season.

A fully healthy Brown has the ability to be one of the top 25 players in the league, as evidenced by his All-Star trip last season. Trade rumors will always follow so long as he’s not the best player on the team, but Celtics fans should hope he sticks around for a long time as he continues to ascend.

Boston Celtics starters ranked: 1. SF Jayson Tatum

Jayson Tatum is one of the best young scorers and players in the entire NBA. He should be the best starter in Boston for years to come and the team will go as far as the superstar is able to take them.

En route to his second straight All-Star trip last year, Tatum averaged 26.4 points per game for the year, his first time finishing in the top ten in the NBA. Unsurprisingly, he took a lot of shots to get to that mark, finishing in the top 20 in both two-point and three-point makes. He did miss 713 shots, the fourth-most in the league.

<iframe width="500" height="281" src=https://hoopshabit.com/2021/10/01/boston-celtics-ranking-5-starters/"https://www.youtube.com/embed/cinaqnorby8?feature=oembed%22 frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen>

Tatum’s high usage is also leading to an unsurprising turnover problem. He averaged 2.7 turnovers per game last year and his 171 turnovers placed him in the top 20 in the league for the first time in his career.

Doesn’t matter. Tatum’s ability as a creator and a scorer dwarfs everything else about his game. He hit over 50 percent of his two-point attempts for the first time last year and still managed to shoot 38.6 percent from three, below his usual mark but still enough to make him proficient from all areas of the court.

One of the biggest concerns about Tatum is something that can’t really be seen or understood quite yet. The superstar battled COVID in January but was still struggling with his breathing and after-effects from the virus months later, symptoms similar to those with long-haul COVID. He’s now vaccinated and hopefully recovering more fully from the virus.

A global pandemic is the only thing that can slow down Tatum on his rise to being one of the league’s best (even that couldn’t do the trick, as he averaged 30.6 points per game in the playoffs). Boston is in good hands with Jayson Tatum leading the charge.
