As the season wore on, the Bulls’ shortage of quality wing players became more and more apparent.
The team began the year believing that Otto Porter would cement himself as the high-level two-way player that he was with the Washington Wizards, but the injuries and the pedestrian play (-0.61 LEBRON) ultimately compelled the team to send him to central Florida as part of the Nikola Vucevic trade.
That said, Porter was far from the only wing player who underwhelmed. Denzel Valentine continued to be his usual Jack of No Trades self (-0.52 LEBRON). Offseason signee Garrett Temple wasn’t any better (-1.06 LEBRON). Rookie Patrick Williams showed some glimpses of what he could possibly become in a couple of years but was far too passive on offense to have a positive effect on that end of the floor (-3.14 offensive LEBRON).
The Bulls could sit back and hope that a full offseason and a stint in Summer League leads to Williams making a jump, but even if that happens, they’ll still need a couple more dependable players of that ilk, whether they look to the draft again (if they find themselves in the top four again) or if they attempt to sign someone like Norman Powell or Tim Hardaway Jr.
Chicago Bulls. Despite a rocky start, the team found a newfound competence under new head coach Billy Donovan and played their way into playoff (or at least play-in) contention.

When the team traded for Orlando Magic All-Star Nikola Vucevic in March, the postseason felt like even more of an inevitability. Unfortunately, things didn’t play out that way.

<a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2021/06/01/chicago-bulls-3-glaring-concerns/2/"http://hoopshabit.com/2021/03/26/chicago-bulls-nikola-vucevic-trade-2/">In the time between the Vucevic trade and the end of the regular season, the Bulls went 12-17 with a -1.4 net rating, and that stretch of uninspiring form combined with teams like the Washington Wizards peaking at the right time ensured that Chicago would watch the spring/summer tournament from home for the fourth consecutive season.

With the Chicago Bulls missing the playoffs again, they have plenty of holes they need to fill to improve the team for next year.

As you would expect from a team that finished with the record that the Bulls did, there is no quick fix move — at least one that’s feasible for this offseason — that will turn them into instant championship contenders.

Assuming that Kawhi Leonard picks up his 2021-22 player options and remains with the LA Clippers, there won’t be a big-name superstar for the team to pursue. Depending on how the Draft Lottery shakes out, improving through the draft may not be a viable option, either.

This means that the Bulls might need to find some creative ways to address these issues.

all of them would be better point guard options than Tomas Satoransky, Coby White, and, sigh, Ryan Arcidiacono.

This team finished with the fourth-highest turnover rate in the league; White (27th percentile in turnover percentage) and Satoransky (second percentile) are a major reason why that number is so high.

Zach LaVine has progressed as a playmaker (23.4 percent assist rate, 98th percentile in Box Creation) but it still doesn’t come naturally to him (27th percentile in turnover rate). Much like Devin Booker in Phoenix, he needs someone who can handle much of those same responsibilities while also covering for his deficiencies as a defender (though he isn’t quite as bad on that end as some make him out to be).

As a horrid defender and a chucker who doesn’t leverage his basketball magnetism, White doesn’t fit that category yet (and time will tell if he ever does). Satoransky’s shortcomings as a floor spacer make him a bad fit for this role as well (he is a solid backup, though). Arcidiacono is best served for limited minutes.

This team needs to acquire a legitimate point guard for next season, especially if they hope to make the playoffs.
