Heading into the 2019-20 season, the Atlanta Hawks find themselves in an interesting spot with all the young players on the roster.
Of all the teams in Eastern Conference that are projected to finish at the bottom of the heap, the Atlanta Hawks stand out at one of the more interesting bottom-feeders. Unlike most of the other teams expected to vie for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 Draft Lottery, the Hawks seem to have a clear direction from a team philosophy standpoint.
As has been discussed on this site several times before, Hawks general manager and team president Travis Schlenk aims to shape this team in the Stephen Curry-era Golden State Warriors’ image.
While the experiment’s first season produced mixed-at-best results overall, the team performed well enough in the second half of the season to spark some belief within the fan base that this team could become a contender in a few years.
But what can Hawks fans expect from their favorite team this year? That answer is a little harder to pin down. Schlenk has cobbled together an intriguing blend of youngsters and veterans that should make his team one of the most entertaining outfits in the league. The jury’s still out on how good this team can be, but fans should expect these five things to happen this year.

5. John Collins will make the All-Star Game

After working on his game during the 2018 Summer League, the fruits of <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/collijo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">John Collins‘ labor were ripe in 2018-19.

Building off of that productive offseason and <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/psl_finder.cgi?request=1&match=single&per_minute_base=36&per_poss_base=100&type=advanced&season_start=1&season_end=1&lg_id=NBA&age_min=0&age_max=99&is_playoffs=N&height_min=0&height_max=99&year_min=2018&year_max=2018&birth_country_is=Y&as_comp=gt&as_val=0&pos_is_g=Y&pos_is_gf=Y&pos_is_f=Y&pos_is_fg=Y&pos_is_fc=Y&pos_is_c=Y&pos_is_cf=Y&c1stat=ws_per_48&c1comp=gt&order_by=ws#stats::none" target="_blank" rel="noopener" ref="nofollow">an impressive rookie campaign that went unnoticed thanks to the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/mitchdo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Donovan Mitchell/<a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/simmobe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Ben Simmons <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://www.sbnation.com/2018/12/29/18158721/ben-simmons-donovan-mitchell-rookie-of-the-year-beef-76ers-jazz" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rookie of the Year feud, Collins became the full-time starter at power forward and the bump in minutes and attempts resulted in a 19.5 point, 9.8 rebound season.

Now, before you say, “Of course his numbers went up. He got more minutes and touches,” Collins’ breakout season wasn’t a consequence of increased volume. When you extrapolate his stats to per 100 possessions, his points went from 21.3 in 2017-18 to 30.0 last year, so this wasn’t a case of shameless stat-padding.

Atlanta’s net rating going from minus-8.9 to minus-2.3 when Collins was on the floor also backs this up.

<iframe width="500" height="281" src=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://www.youtube.com/embed/plQF_LIcGSo?feature=oembed%22 frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen>

On offense, Collins primarily served as a solid rim-roller (64 percent of his shot attempts came after zero dribbles) who punctuated many of <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/y/youngtr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Trae Young‘s passes with a layup, 3-pointer or an authoritative dunk (1.25 points per possession as the roll man in 2018-19, placing him in the 79th percentile).

But he also excelled in post isolations (1.01 PPP) and transition scoring (1.25 PPP), making him more than a one-dimensional slasher.

He still needs to improve his defense — <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"http://www.espn.com/nba/statistics/rpm/_/page/2/sort/DRPM/position/6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ESPN’s Real Plus/Minus (RPM) metric ranked him as one of the worst defensive power forwards last year.

However, <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://stats.nba.com/players/hustle/?sort=CONTESTED_SHOTS&dir=1&Season=2018-19&SeasonType=Regular%20Season%22 target="_blank" rel="noopener">his hustle stats and his tracking stats are more encouraging — and his spot-up game (0.97 PPP, 34.3 percent on wide-open 3s), but if Collins refines those areas of his game and continues to build chemistry with Young, he can make the All-Star team in an East that’s short on frontcourt stars.

4. Trae Young will play more like he did post-All-Star break

There are still plenty of reasons to remain skeptical of Trae Young’s potential as a superstar point guard. His defense — <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"http://www.espn.com/nba/statistics/rpm/_/page/3/sort/DRPM/position/1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">last among PG’s in DRPM, ranked in 17th percentile in opponent’s pick-and-roll ball-handler PPP — makes him a liability on the less glamorous end of the court and despite some flashes of brilliance, his offense is still a work in progress.

Fortunately, Young made great strides on that side of the floor last year following the All-Star break. A first half where he averaged 16.9 points and 7.6 assists with a .406/.312/.798 shooting line made the former Oklahoma Sooner look like a small, overmatched guard whose game wouldn’t translate to the NBA.

<iframe width="500" height="281" src=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://www.youtube.com/embed/0c12R0qwfxc?feature=oembed%22 frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen>

But once he settled in and started to figure out pro defenses, Young ignited with a 24.7 point and 9.2 assists per game run through the final 23 games of the season. During that stretch, Young converted 44.6 percent of his wide-open 3’s.

If even some of that production carries over to this coming season, it will unlock his preternatural passing ability, which will vastly improve the team’s offense.

It isn’t a stretch to say that everything the Hawks want to achieve hinges on <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://hoopshabit.com/2019/06/12/atlanta-hawks-2018-19-player-grades-trae-young/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">how good Young becomes. If his season mimics or exceeds that two-month-long sample size, it’s a good sign for the future.

3. Kevin Huerter will make a jump in Year 2

Going into the 2018 draft, everyone knew <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/huertke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Kevin Huerter for the incendiary 3-point shooting that made him such a standout player at the University of Maryland. In his first season with the Hawks last year, he lived up to that reputation, shooting 38.5 percent from downtown in 75 games.

Outside of his flawless shooting stroke, however, Huerter <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://hoopshabit.com/2019/05/07/atlanta-hawks-3-biggest-disappointments-from-2018-19-nba-season/2/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">struggled to find his footing. Averaging only 9.7 points per game with a 10.1 Player Efficiency Rating (PER), and .034 win shares per 48 minutes (WS/48), the young wing looked like anything but a potential superstar.

Worse yet, he struggled alongside purported co-star Trae Young: the two combined for a minus-4.2 net rating when they shared the floor.

As a shot creator, Huerter looked out of his depth more often than not. His 0.75 PPP on pick-and-rolls placed him in the 33rd percentile last year, so it’s easy to see why he was used primarily as a floor spacer throughout his inaugural campaign. And the less said about his defense — opponents shot 51.1 percent against him — the better.

Despite those issues, Huerter <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_uKaMUIHwI%22 target="_blank" rel="noopener">flashed some glimpses of on-ball excellence last year, be it an advanced pass in transition or his 37.7 percent shooting on pull-up 3s and without <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bazemke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Kent Bazemore around to siphon his minutes and a clean bill of health to start the season, he should be able to make some considerable strides this year in becoming the secondary playmaker this team needs.

2. The offense will improve

Let’s not sugarcoat this: the Atlanta Hawks’ offense sucked last year; it’s a big reason why they finished 29-53 last year. Sure, it wasn’t as troubling as their 27th-ranked defense, but their inability to consistently torch defenses contributed just as much to their losing season.

To put it simply, the Hawks’ scoring attack <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://hoopshabit.com/2019/04/22/can-atlanta-hawks-become-an-elite-shooting-team-going-forward/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">was akin to an artist who draws a beautiful outline of a mural, but consistently paints outside of the lines. The pick-and-roll-heavy scheme created a lot of great looks on drive-and-kicks — they ranked ninth in open 3-point attempts and led the NBA in wide-open shots from behind the arc — but they couldn’t turn those opportunities into points.

The numbers speak for themselves: Atlanta ranked 23rd in offensive rating, 29th in pick-and-roll PPP, 27th in handoff PPP, 27th in transition PPP, 23rd in open 3-point percentage and last in turnovers per 100 possessions last year.

But there’s no need to despair. The offense actually improved after the All-Star break, ranking 11th in offensive rating and given that their rise up the ranks correlated with Trae Young’s ascent, they should look more like that version of the team this year.

Will they become a top-five or top-10 offense? Probably not, but with a litany of sharpshooting wings and the continued development of the young stars, the Hawks should be a more cohesive group on this end in 2019-20.

1. Their record will get better, too

As fun as it is to about this team’s potential, the fact remains that they won’t be a good team next year.

Clubs as young as the Atlanta Hawks tend to scuffle while they adjust to the heightened pace, speed, and athleticism the NBA offers and with a roster comprised of salary dumps and unproven young talent, it’s no surprise to see sites like FiveThirtyEight project Atlanta as a team that will <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2020-nba-predictions/hawks/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fight to win 30 games, even in a weak Eastern Conference.

Chief among them is the mediocrity that pervades the rest of the conference. It’s been said in <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://hoopshabit.com/2019/09/04/atlanta-hawks-playoff-team-weakened-east/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">other pieces on this site, but are the Hawks really that much worse than the other teams in the East?

Sure, they aren’t markedly better than those teams, but this team should hold its own against the likes of the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/walljo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">John Wall-less <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/washington-wizards/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Washington Wizards, the middling Detroit Pistons, the awful <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/charlotte-hornets/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Charlotte Hornets or the equally terrible <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2019/10/16/atlanta-hawks-5-predictions-2019-20-season/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/cleveland-cavaliers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cleveland Cavaliers.

This isn’t to suggest that the Hawks are a lock to make the playoffs, but if we get a significant jump from the players mentioned in the previous slides and the supplementary pieces become the best versions of themselves, this team could shock some people.
<!—pageview_candidate—>">
