Hindsight might be 20/20 in the NBA draft, but it also takes time to develop. Like a photograph slowly coming into focus in the chemical solution of a dark room, prospects slowly transform into what they will ultimately become. Just two years after the 2019 NBA Draft, our view is still coming into focus.
That view, though incomplete, is still much more information than the 30 NBA teams had in June of 2019. With two seasons of games logged, and the various prospects playing some number of them, we can see enough information to make very different decisions about where each player should have gone.
Just two seasons later, the 2019 NBA Draft looks wildly different – but the top has stayed the same
This 2019 NBA Redraft goes back through the original draft order (as they came out of draft night) and selects players based on two years of information on their value as a prospect. Team fit is taken into account to some extent, but mostly we are weighing the player’s production, upside and fit in the modern NBA. In essence, we are leaning more towards “best player available” than fit but including both in our analysis.
With that in mind, our 2019 NBA Redraft slots the prospects in a wildly different order. Picks 5-10 feature players taken anywhere from 11th to 29th, while one of the original players in the top 10 falls out of the first round entirely. Yet even with all of that movement, the first four picks stay exactly the same, which seems ludicrous but is somehow true.
With that in mind, we jump in at No. 1 with the New Orleans Pelicans, who rode lottery luck to the first pick and came away with a superstar.

“Point Zion” has been the evolution of that touch around the basket, where rather than hope for an entry pass Williamson takes the ball himself from the perimeter. His ball-handling and passing are good enough to make the offense hum when he is at the center of it all.

Among all players taken in the 2019 NBA Draft (minimum 1000 minutes played) Zion Williamson leads them in points per game (25.7), rebounds per game (7.0) and his field goal percentage is the highest among non-centers. He leads the class in win shares despite the low number of games, and his Box Plus-Minus is mind-bogglingly higher than the rest. Three players from this class have a “BPM” above 1.0: undrafted John Konchar (1.8), Brandon Clarke (2.1) and then Zion Williamson with more than the two combined at 4.6.

It’s possible that Williamson’s body build and knee issues combine for a shorter career, but that’s theoretical and a problem for the future. For now he is a franchise-changing athletic marvel who made his first All-Star Game as a second-year player and should be in the All-NBA mix as early as next season. The New Orleans Pelicans don’t even consider taking anyone else here.

The Memphis Grizzlies jumped up in the lottery to land at the second pick, and it ended up being an even larger boon for the franchise than with many drafts. Despite the checkered history of the second overall pick, even in recent years, the Grizzlies nailed their pick in taking Murray State point guard Ja Morant.

Morant came out of nowhere, from lightly recruited high school player to deserving second overall pick. Morant is not a knockdown shooter but he is absolutely a scorer, his 18.4 points per game thus far in his career second-most in the class. He also excels on setting up teammates, averaging 7.3 assists per game, by far the most in the class (Darius Garland is second with 4.9).

Only a handful of players in the league play with Morant’s intensity, able to explode to the hoop and destroy the rim. He has the sort of intangibles one looks to in a “best player” to lead a team towards contention. He is a negative of sorts on defense and needs to improve his outside shot to be an All-NBA player, but two seasons in he has been as good as advertised.

If the Grizzlies already had a lead ball creator, it’s at least conceivable that they could consider a wing player here. Both RJ Barrett and De’Andre Hunter are good defenders already who could be elite as they mature into their primes. Yet without that player on the Grizzlies’ roster, Morant is the obvious pick in addition to being the one they made two years ago.

The 2018-19 Duke Blue Devils had one of the best freshman classes in recent college basketball history, with four top-10 recruits. Coming into the season RJ Barrett was viewed as the superior prospect even if Zion Williamson was the bigger star, and although that flipped during their freshman seasons it left Barrett falling no further than three.

As a rookie Barrett struggled to create efficient looks for himself, lacking the burst to gain separation. While he still has room to grow in that area he has both improved and found a more lucrative role, playing less on-the-ball and finding ways to contribute as a cutter and shooter.

Defensively Barrett has come on early as well, likely helped in his development by playing for defensive guru Tom Thibodeau. After a dysfunctional environment as a rookie he played on a disciplined New York Knicks team this past season and was a major part of their push to the fourth-seed in the Eastern Conference.

Barrett is an underrated passer who would likely see his assists increase in a better environment. He is in a tier below Morant (and two below Williamson, realistically) as he likely won’t grow into someone who can be the best player on a title team. Even so, he is a solid starter already and could certainly grow into more.

The Atlanta Hawks jumped up from the eighth pick to the fourth pick in order to select De’Andre Hunter out of Virginia, the first defensive difference maker taken in the 2019 draft. The 6’8″ forward projected as an ideal combo forward on defense (outside of some deflated steal and block totals due to Virginia’s pack-line scheme), and the question was whether his offensive game would translate at the next level.

Through one season, it did not. As a rookie Hunter appeared in 63 games, shooting just 41 percent from the field as he was one of the league’s more negative players in his minutes. The extended offseason after the league paused its season was put to good use, however, and Hunter came back a much-improved player for this past season.

Injuries limited Hunter to just 23 games, but when he did play he was every bit the embodiment of the vision the Hawks had when they traded up to take him. On identical volume Hunter increased his field goal percentage to 48.4 percent, which corresponded to a leap in free throw percentage that speaks to increased shot skill, not simply shooting luck.

Hunter was also a defensive force, deployed often as the Hawks’ primary defender on opposing shot creators and performing admirably. His “stocks” (steals and blocks) are still low, but in between those outcomes he is in the right position, has the strength to guard most 4s, and overall gives the Hawks an element they don’t have elsewhere on the roster.

What is truly exciting is where Hunter’s arrow is pointed. Is he moving towards elite defensive wing with enough offense to get by? Or does some of the shot creation he showed this year build on itself as he becomes more of a two-way impact player? Either way, the combination of production and upside make him the clear fourth pick in the draft. If Hunter can string together an entire season without significant injury we will see exactly what sort of player he is becoming.

After the first four picks of out 2019 NBA Redraft go exactly the same as two years ago — which is borderline unheard of when looking back on drafts historically — we have our first change here, and it’s a major one. After originally going 29th overall to the San Antonio Spurs, forward Keldon Johnson leaps up to go fifth to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

As is often the case with the loaded classes of prospects at Kentucky, it was hard for draft analysts to properly place them in the correct order. P.J. Washington and Tyler Herro will show up soon, as this was an absolutely loaded class for the Wildcats, but on draft night Johnson was the third one picked and now he flips the script.

There isn’t anything Johnson does that is elite: he’s not a nuclear athlete, or a perimeter marksman, or a passing savant. There also isn’t much that Johnson cannot do, as he contributes to every facet of the game. He can fit onto just about any team, playing anything from the 2 through the 4, with a small usage role or a large one.

That versatility is what elevates Johnson, along with a whisper of upside that he could develop into something more. Although he has played in only 86 games he has made the most of them, and his 4.3 win shares (on a pair of teams that missed the postseason, no less) rank 10th in the class. Johnson helps a team win games, and that is something many teams in the lottery could use. Here the Cleveland Cavaliers gain a forward, the most valuable commodity in the league, able to fill in the gaps alongside Collin Sexton among their young core.

After one season, with Zion Williamson barely playing due to injury and Ja Morant largely inefficient as a rookie, Brandon Clarke had a reasonable case to be the most productive member of the 2019 Draft class. While he lacks the upside to be a star, Clarke has continued to be an impactful player through his sophomore season.

Originally taken by the Memphis Grizzlies with the 21st pick, Clarke leapt out of the gate as a rookie, averaging an efficient 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, earning a regular rotation spot from the jump. Most naturally a power forward, Clarke can play small-ball 5 in spurts, and his instincts in help defense are really good.

The former Gonzaga big knows where to be on the court, quickly jumping the line for the defensive grading scale most young players have to go through. Part of that is his age; he will turn 25 before his third season begins. Even so, a lot of older prospects don’t pan out, and Clarke has done so immediately. His 9.1 win shares are second in this class, as are his BPM and Value Over Replacement Player (VORP).

The Minnesota Timberwolves need good defenders to slot around Karl-Anthony Towns, and they tried to take one originally with this pick. While Jarrett Culver hasn’t panned out, Clarke would be a great option in a frontcourt rotation with Towns, and the latter’s shooting would mitigate Clarke’s middling help in that area. This isn’t a swing for the fences pick, but it’s a reliable way to get on base.

It is rare that a lottery pick is able to be a difference-maker for an NBA Finals team in their first two seasons, but the 2019 NBA Draft class boasts two such players. The first one to go in our redraft is Cameron Johnson, the former North Carolina sharpshooting forward who originally went 11th overall to the Phoenix Suns. At the time, most draft analysts thought that Phoenix had reached significantly in taking Johnson that high, even if they traded down to do so.

Two years later, and it’s clear the Suns made a shrewd evaluation of Johnson’s ability to drive winning basketball. The core of his impact comes from the shooting, which is sublime. Johnson is a career 38.1 percent 3-point shooter on 5.3 attempts per game, which equates to about 8.1 attempts per-36 minutes. He is deadly from the corners but has even flashed a cut-and-shoot game where he lances inside the arc to catch-and-pop from midrange.

Defensively Johnson was expected to get run over, but in fact, he has proven capable of holding his own. He moves his feet well and competes, and at 6’8″ is tall enough to contest most shots. Despite some expectations of chronic injuries, he has appeared in 117 games over the past two seasons. He was a key rotation player in the Phoenix Suns’ run to the NBA Finals, shooting 44.6 percent from distance in the playoffs.

The Chicago Bulls thought they took their version of Cam Johnson in 2018, taking Arizona shooting big Lauri Markkanen. While Markkanen hasn’t been bad, Johnson has been better, and would fit that role well for the Bulls. The best way to juice an offense quickly is to add shooting, and Johnson brings that at an elite level, possibly as the best shooter in the entire draft.

To this point in our 2019 Redraft, anyone who watched the 2019-20 NBA season but then took a year off would be mostly nodding their head. Keldon Johnson, Brandon Clarke and Cameron Johnson all moved up, but they all had fairly solid rookie seasons that justified that movement to some extent. Taking Jordan Poole with the eighth pick would blow their minds.

Injuries up-and-down the Golden State Warriors’ roster forced Poole into action as a rookie, and he was not good. He shot just 33.3 percent from the field, a frosty 27.9 percent from 3-point range, and managed to make nearly every defensive mistake in the book. He logged over 1200 minutes, and only towards the very end of the season did he show flashes that he might be able to improve as a player.

Then came the long offseason that the worst teams in the league received, and Poole clearly worked on his game. A stint in the G League Bubble this past season showed off a confident and much more efficient player, one who averaged 22.4 points per game on 45.1 percent from the field; not elite, but certainly not the damaging player he was as a rookie.

That confidence carried over into the rest of the season with the Warriors, as Poole morphed into a deserving sixth man, even closing some games alongside Stephen Curry in the backcourt. The pinnacle of the season came in the team’s penultimate regular-season game, when Curry sat for rest and Poole dropped 38 points and six assists.

The former Michigan guard is a decent point guard and an even better 2-guard, with excellent decision-making skills and a shot that is growing more versatile by the month. He has stepped up as a defensive player as well; no one will ever mistake him for a stopper, but he isn’t easily picked on anymore. At 6’4″ he has the size to hold his own.

It’s possible that the Jordan Poole we saw over the last three months of the season is a mirage of sorts, a hot streak helped along by being in the orbit of human supernova Curry. More likely, this was a display of the player Poole is becoming, and that player could help the New Orleans Pelicans build a young core around Zion Williamson. They originally took center Jaxson Hayes; here they take a better player at a more important position.

In the last slide we mentioned a hypothetical basketball fan who saw the 2019-20 season but missed this past year. Assuming they also got to see the NBA Bubble, and the Miami Heat’s run to the NBA Finals, they would be apoplectic that Tyler Herro is going as late as ninth.

Herro certainly had an incredible postseason run last season, playing 33.6 minutes per game and averaging 16 points and 5.1 rebounds, shooting 37.5 percent from deep. He was capable of creating his own shots, helping to bail the Heat out of tough situations. His trajectory was pointed to the stars.

Then Herro played another regular season, and rather than build on that growth he reverted back to the player he was as a rookie, a useful rotation guard but one that was neither efficient nor special. He is a career 43.4 percent shooter from the field, he struggles on defense and the swagger and shot-making that captured national attention in the Bubble has faded to occasional sparks.

Even so, we know that that confident and effective shot-maker is in there somewhere, and Herro still has the outline of a player who could turn into a star. Player development isn’t linear, and teams know better how to stop Herro given the increased tape. Next season he could take another leap and make his way further up this list.

The Washington Wizards can take all the lottery tickets they can find, as developing a home-grown star to play with Bradley Beal is likely necessary for this franchise to take a step up. Herro has a chance to become that player, and if not the Wizards are no stranger to poor defensive backcourt players.

With the 10th pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, the Atlanta Hawks originally took Duke wing Cameron Reddish. He is still on the board here, and would not be a terrible choice given the positional value of wings and Reddish’s defensive upside. Even so, he has been very inconsistent and slow to develop on the offensive end, so ultimately the Hawks go in a different direction.

That direction is towards a player from a different blue blood program, Kentucky’s P.J. Washington. The former SEC Player of the Year was originally taken 12th overall by the Charlotte Hornets; he steps up two spots and heads a few hours southwest to join the Atlanta Hawks.

Washington has been a key part of the Hornets’ rotation since early in his rookie season, starting 118 of the 122 games he has appeared in over his two-year career. Only three players have logged more total minutes than Washington’s 3,713, a large enough sample size to understand how valuable Washington is as a player.

Although just 6’7″, Washington is strong with a low center of gravity, allowing him to defend centers if necessary. Charlotte has most often played him at the 4, but at times gone small and slid Washington down to the 5. He has a career 3.2 block percentage, a very solid number for a forward, and has been a positive defensive player in both seasons.

Offensively Washington has grown as a player, primarily serving as a finisher rather than a creator; 86 percent of his non-putback 2-pointers and 94.7 percent of his 3-pointers <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2021/07/22/nba-draft-zion-williamson-2019-redraft/"https://www.pbpstats.com/season-stats/nba?EntityType=Player&EntityId=1629023&StatType=Totals&Table=Scoring%22 target="_blank" rel="noopener">have been assisted (per PBP stats) over the course of his career. He has been reasonably efficient, improving to 38.6 percent from outside. Given his defensive ability, that number, especially at the 4 or even more so at the 5, makes him a valuable player already.

Washington lacks star upside on either end of the court; he won’t be an All-Star or an All-Defense winner, more than likely. What he does offer is positional versatility and solid two-way play. For a Hawks team that already has its star in place and is looking for good defenders who won’t kill you on offense, Washington is a no-brainer choice here at 10.

Coming into the 2019 NBA Draft, Darius Garland was one player who rose up many draft boards late. An injury cost him most of his freshman season at Vanderbilt, and initially depressed his value. As the draft cycle rotated and the draft itself approached Garland was a riser as analysts broke down his tape and get excited about his shooting upside. He ultimately went fifth overall to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Garland has had to find his way in a backcourt alongside another ball-dominant point guard in Collin Sexton, but he has done a solid job so far. He has shot 37.4 percent from 3-point range in his career, up to 39.5 this past season. The great thing for Garland playing beside Sexton is that most of his 3-pointers are assisted (70.5 percent), <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2021/07/22/nba-draft-zion-williamson-2019-redraft/"https://www.pbpstats.com/season-stats/nba?EntityType=Player&EntityId=1629636%22 target="_blank" rel="noopener">per PBP stats.

The 6’1″ point guard has also grown as a passer, averaging 6.1 assists per game this past season. Add on really strong scoring chops (17.4 points per game this year) and he is turning into a good offensive point guard who, despite a lack of athleticism can competently run an offense on a good team.

The problem is when you consider the defensive side of the ball. Garland is small and has terrible defensive instincts, helpful generally only when he gambles right for steals. He was a bottom-10 player in Defensive BPM this past season, and the absolute worst player in the metric in 2019-20 (it doesn’t bode well for Cleveland’s defensive future that Sexton is also bottom-10 both seasons as well).

A team like the Phoenix Suns can take Garland at 11 and have a reliable 3rd guard who still has upside to be a starter if he can find a way not to die on defense and improves his personal shot creation. The guards who went above him, namely Tyler Herro and Jordan Poole, have better physical tools, can compete better on defense and possess similar star upside. That drops Garland down to 11, still a solid landing spot for a good player.

Evaluating basketball players is a difficult task to undertake, in large part due to all of the myriad factors that complicate an understanding of how good that player actually is. You cannot evaluate a wide receiver in football without understanding the context of the quarterback throwing them the ball, or evaluate a politician’s performance in an election without understanding the context of how their district naturally votes and the national political climate. It is the same with basketball players, especially young basketball players who have only played in a handful of contexts.

That is the difficulty in evaluating Nicolas Claxton, a 6’11” center with only 47 career regular season games to his name. He played college basketball at Georgia, without any other NBA talent, which is an exceptionally difficult position for a center to be in. After going in the second round of the 2019 NBA Draft, Claxton has played the vast majority of his games alongside ball-dominant offensive stars and has been asked to do very little.

In the 47 games and 781 total minutes he has played, Claxton has been a very good defensive center. He has swatted 2.2. shots per 36 minutes and his career block percentage of 5.4 percent ranks 14th all-time and fourth among active players, behind Rudy Gobert, Anthony Davis and Serge Ibaka. Not simply a shot blocker, the Nets’ defense was significantly better when he was on the court, and his individual defensive rating of 108 was tied with Myles Turner for 13th in the league.

Claxton was also a hyper-efficient offensive finisher, shooting 60.6 percent from the field for his career. Yet that is also largely a reality of the positive ecosystem he is in, as 88.5 percent of his non-putback 2-pointers have been assisted. Almost all of his minutes have come with the likes of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving or James Harden on the court.

That’s what makes it difficult to evaluate how good Claxton really is. He might be a rising star, a future Defensive Player of the Year candidate. He might also just be thriving in the specific role he finds himself in, and is less scalable to a different situation. There isn’t enough information to determine which might be the case for the young center.

Here at 12 the Charlotte Hornets take a chance on Claxton, filling a hole at center that the Hornets even now are still trying to fill. He would clearly help their defense, especially at the rim, and give their young guards a lob threat to stretch defenses vertically. It might be a reach to take him at 12, but there is enough upside for a true defensive difference-maker to make him the first full-time center off the board.

The theory of Coby White is a perfect fit for the modern NBA game. The ideal (and realistic – obviously every team would want Magic Johnson or Stephen Curry) modern point guard is a knockdown shooter from outside who likes to push the pace and can set up teammates when he gets penetration inside. That sounds like the draft profile Coby White had coming out of North Carolina.

That’s why the Chicago Bulls took White with the seventh pick of the 2019 NBA Draft, hoping to find Zach LaVine a long-term answer at point guard. White certainly has not been bad; his 134 games lead the draft class, and he has hit a respectable 35.7 percent of his 3-pointers. Overall, however, he has not capitalized on the upside he came into the league with.

Accompanying White’s decent perimeter shooting has been his terrible finishing, as he has shot just 45.3 percent from inside the arc. He has also been a below-average passer, averaging just 3.8 assists per game despite having the ball in his hands a lot. Defensively he has been the nightmare most teenage guards are when they enter the league.

That last point is why White still goes in the lottery here: he is just 21 years old, and won’t turn 22 until the All-Star Break next season. His shooting numbers from every area improved this past season (not a ton, but some) and he raised his assist percentage significantly. There are still major question marks, but he has plenty of time to grow into a solid starter at the point. The Miami Heat, with Tyler Herro not falling here, get to take a young guard with upside in the redraft.

In the 2019 NBA Draft the New Orleans Pelicans had just completely remade their roster. Anthony Davis was now in Los Angeles, and in his place was a new young core of Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball and Josh Hart. After taking Zion Williamson and Jaxson Hayes in the top-10, the Pelicans had one more first-round pick at 17 and needed to fill one last need: a guard with shot-creation ability.

They took Virginia Tech guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker, a cousin to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and an excellent option for what they were looking for. Alexander-Walker has stepped into the league and largely been what the Pelicans hoped for, averaging 17.5 points per 36 minutes largely coming off the bench.

The problem with Alexander-Walker has been the efficiency. He has shot just 40.1 percent from the field for his career, and 34.7 percent from 3-point range. Those numbers have ticked up in his second season, as has his free-throw percentage, but he has a long way to go to be an efficient scorer.

He does have good size, at 6’6″ able to hold up well against opposing wings when he is playing alongside another point guard, but with the speed to check most 1s if he’s playing alongside Zion Williamson as the nominal point guard. If he can consolidate his defensive chops and improve the efficiency he jumps up a tier here.

The Boston Celtics originally took Romeo Langford at 14, a pick they received from the Sacramento Kings. Langford has dropped significantly in this redraft, so the Celtics take advantage and add a guard with size to add to their rotation.

Cameron “Cam” Reddish probably deserves to be much higher on this list. He also deserves to be a mid-2nd round pick. That’s because Reddish has been one of the more inconsistent players in this draft class, and where he turns out is still anyone’s guess.

The good: Reddish is already a solid perimeter defender, with good strength and excellent anticipation. He returned from a long injury absence for the Atlanta Hawks and was immediately inserted into the Eastern Conference Finals and asked to defend Khris Middleton. His lightning-fast hands generate steals at a decent clip, and he has the foot speed to get out in transition on such plays and finish.

The bad: Reddish can’t seem to score. He has hit just 37.8 percent of his shots overall, and 30.9 percent from 3-point range. He will decide on a possession it’s time to create and shot and either turn the ball over or fail to gain separation. Every once-in-a-while he gets hot and his shooting woes go away, but they are always lurking just around the corner.

At 6’8″ he has great size on the perimeter, and the Detroit Pistons decide to take a chance on the good with the 15th pick. Teams should largely continue to be believers in Reddish, at least for now, as the upside is exactly what most teams need on the wing. He replaces Sekou Doumbouya here, the Pistons’ original pick, who is still incredibly raw two seasons later and has a long way to go to be an NBA player.

With all of the scrambling that happens in a redraft, it’s surprising to see a player and pick align this far down the draft board, but it happens here. The Orlando Magic originally took Okeke with the 16th pick, with some sort of agreement in place that they would take him this high if he would wait a year to sign his contract as he recovered from a major injury sustained in the NCAA Tournament.

That made this past season Okeke’s rookie year, and he clearly showed rust as he regained his form after the injury. The 6’6″ forward shot only 41.7 percent from the field in 25.2 minutes per game for the Magic. Overall he struggled to pick up NBA defense and was a low-usage player on a team that was holding open auditions for players to step up.

Yet there were some flashes that point to a good player slowly unfurling. For a two-week stretch after the NBA trade deadline Okeke found his groove, averaging 16 points per game and hitting 14 3-pointers. He was scoring, passing and getting involved on defense. If a healthy offseason can help him consolidate his progress, next season could be a breakout one for Okeke.

Every player has their strengths and weaknesses, but a small handful of players manage to make it into the league with overwhelmingly strong strengths and incredibly weak weaknesses. Matisse Thybulle fits the bill as one such player.

He entered the league as a top-10 defender and has only improved since then. At 6’5″ he has reasonable size for a shooting guard, but his 7-foot wingpsan allows him to swallow up opposing guards and even most wings in the league. He creates steals out of thin air, leading the league in steal percentage this past season. Despite playing only 20 minutes per game he was third in the league in total steals.

That wingpsan also allows him to block shots even defending on the perimeter, and his block percentage ranked inside the top-10, and was by far the highest-ranked non-big in the league. Thybulle’s defense is so good it’s impossible to ignore, and he made the All-Defensive team this past year even in a small role.

The offense is the issue, and what keeps Thybulle from being a high-minute starter. For his career he has hit just 42 percent of his shots from outside, even more concerning given that he has a low usage role and gets good looks set up for him. He his only 30.1 percent of his 3-pointers this year, and just 44.4 percent from the free-throw line. His passing is only to get the ball away from him.

Just outside the lottery is the right place to take Thybulle, and the New Orleans Pelicans pull the trigger here on a unique player who is immediately a difference maker on one end of the court. In this redraft the Pelicans have nabbed Zion Williamson, Jordan Poole, and Matisse Thybulle, a young and explosive collection of players with a much higher ceiling than their original draft picks.

To this point, every player selected originally went in the first 31 picks of the 2019 NBA Draft. That ends here, as Luguentz “Lou” Dort goes from undrafted to top-20 pick in our redraft. At 6’3″ and built like a running back, Dort’s offensive ceiling seemed too low to justify drafting him two years ago.

Dort was undeterred and signed a two-way contract with the OKC Thunder during the offseason, making his season debut just a few weeks into the season. He was a tenacious defender from the jump, harrying opposing guards and wings and contesting shots. He carved out a role on a playoff team, starting 28 games in the regular season and six games in the playoffs for the Thunder.

Dort’s limitations come at the offensive end of the court, where he is as streaky of a shooter as they come. He can get hot, as he did dropping 30 points on 6-of-12 shooting from deep in a Game 7 last year. He can also get really cold, as his 18.4 percent from deep in the first six games of that series highlight. For his career he is a 33.3 percent shooter from deep and has hit just 38.9 percent of his overall shots.

The Indiana Pacers make the move for Dort at 18 here, adding a reliable rotation piece to a team that expects to be in the postseason every year. The shot may come-and-go but he is willing to take it, and he can do enough to survive offensively while filling a wing stopper role on defense.

Daniel Gafford was considered a fringe lottery prospect going into his freshman season at Arkansas, but by the time the NBA Draft Combine came around he looked like he would be a question mark to be taken in the first round. He therefore returned to college, had an even better season, and…still fell to the second round, going 38th to the Chicago Bulls.

That put Gafford in a crowded frontcourt, behind a second-year lottery pick in Wendell Carter Jr. and a third-year lottery pick in Lauri Markkanen. He carved out a small role in the rotation, posting great on-off splits and providing instant rim protection. Offensively he was entirely a dependent player, but he was a strong finisher who ran the court and set hard screens.

There is a role in the league for such a player, and this past season Gafford built on that by increasing his impact in a similarly small role with the Bulls, and then expanding it after a midseason trade to the Washington Wizards. By the time the postseason hit Gafford was the team’s best center, including shooting 12-of-15 across two play-in games.

A team drafting Gafford can’t expect a future star, but he has continued to improve and fits perfectly as a low-usage starting center who will run the floor and protect the rim. The San Antonio Spurs take him here as an option to start, or as a replacement to allow them to move Jakob Poetl. Their original pick, Luka Samanic, has shown very little thus far to prove he belongs in the NBA.

Kevin Porter Jr. was supposed to be a top-10 pick. He is a dynamic scorer, has good size and all the athletic gifts you could ask for in a guard prospect. Why did he fall to 30th on the night of the 2019 NBA Draft? The reasons are stacked up in the “intangibles” column, as Porter has clashed with coaches, teammates and team personnel in college and in the NBA.

That is why the Cleveland Cavaliers dumped him on the Houston Rockets for a couple of future 2nd rounders, as the organization was not willing to indulge those character issues. Porter was good as a rookie and even better as a second-year player, averaging 16.6 points for the Rockets even as injuries limited him to 26 games.

In addition to the scoring, which Porter did with middling efficiency, he showed he can run an NBA offense, averaging 6.2 assists per game — and even more impressive feat given the surrounding cast in Houston.

The offensive skillset and reasonable defensive ability is there. The question is whether he is able to take the necessary steps to stabilize his off-court and character issues in order to be a long-term professional. If so, he is well worth taking in the back half of the first round. The Philadelphia 76ers take a plunge here, hoping for the better half of possibilities with Porter.

Three players from the 2019 NBA Draft increased their value in the 2021 NBA Playoffs as they demonstrated they can not only survive on the court in the postseason but thrive on it. One was Ja Morant, who showed he is a bona fide star guard scoring in bunches in the first round. The second was Cameron Johnson, playing a key role on an NBA Finals team.

The third was Terance Mann, who went from second-round afterthought to trendy rotation player this year, and then when injuries struck the LA Clippers this postseason Mann stepped up to become one of their most important players.

At 6’5″ Mann has enough size to guard most wing players, and he defended up and down the spectrum for the Clippers in the postseason. He has put in a lot of work on his 3-point shot, hitting 43.2 percent of his shots this past year. That work culminated in the Clippers’ Game 6 victory over the Utah Jazz in the second round, when Mann went off for 39 points and 7-for-10 3-point shooting.

Mann is not some offensive superstar, he was just a role player who got hot. But he is a tenacious defender who fits perfectly in a rotation, either as a fifth starter or as a key bench option. At this point in the draft, teams are deciding on safer options with a lower ceiling or risky options with some small amount of high-end upside.

The Memphis Grizzlies, armed already in this redraft with Ja Morant, go for the more sure thing in Mann, and get a nasty defender to fit right into their roster of fighters. Their original pick here, Brandon Clarke, went much earlier in the redraft, but they recapture some of the defensive versatility in taking Mann.

The Boston Celtics traded back in the 2019 Draft, going from 20th to 22nd, seeing Matisse Thybulle and Brandon Clarke go in the intervening picks, two players who are already off the board in the redraft. They took Grant Williams, who has been an active rotation piece for the Celtics but his lack of upside and middling contributions outside of minutes has him outside of the first round in our redraft.

Instead the Celtics go for a player on the other end of the spectrum; instead of a low-ceiling big who got a lot of run already, they take a high-ceiling wing without as much tape in Talen Horton-Tucker. The Los Angeles Lakers, who originally took Horton-Tucker at 46, are reportedly very high on the Iowa State product, withholding him in trade talks.

There have been flashes of something greater from Tucker, especially on the defensive end of the court. His incredibly long arms (7’1″, mind-boggling considering he stands just 6’4″ tall) can swallow up opposing ball-handlers, stretch into passing lanes and even block a few shots. Advanced metrics such as Defensive BPM have rated him as a solidly positive player both of his seasons in the league.

It’s the other end of the court where there are question marks for Horton-Tucker. He scores decently well inside the arc, but has hit just 28.5 percent of his career 3-pointers, and that number went down in his second season. He shoots 76.7 percent on his free throws, a whisper of a hope that the shot can come around.

If it does, there is an NBA starter here as a wing who thrives off-ball but has enough ball-handling ability to attack closeouts; think something like Mikal Bridges on the Phoenix Suns. Yet he has a long way to go to reach that level, which is why he slides to 22 in our 2019 NBA Redraft.

The draft takes a turn here, as we leave behind players who have demonstrated elite upside or made solid contributions already in their careers. Now we shift to players whose upside is more nebulous and theoretical or, in the case of Terence Davis, who project simply as role players for their careers.

There is nothing wrong with being a role player, nor with finding one with the 23rd pick in the NBA Draft. Given the bust rate at this point in the draft, taking a player who can fill a role off the bench for the next decade is a valuable thing. That’s what the OKC Thunder get here with Davis.

The former Ole Miss 2-guard is a shooter, with the shot utility to sprint around screens and hit outside shots for a team. Despite low minutes he has taken 8.0 3-pointers per 36 minutes for his career, hitting them at a 37.7 percent rate. Far from a one-trick pony, Davis is a good rebounder for his size. Defensively he held up well as a rookie in a positive defensive environment and fell apart as a sophomore in poor defensive environments; the reality is probably somewhere in the middle.

Originally the Oklahoma City Thunder took forward Darius Bazley here, and that would be a reasonable pick again. He will show up in our redraft shortly. In Davis they fill a need for shooting that they haven’t filled consistently in recent years.

The New Orleans Pelicans originally made three selections in the 2019 NBA Draft. Zion Williamson and Nickeil Alexander-Walker are both long gone, but after going eighth in 2019 center Jaxson Hayes falls all the way to 24th.

Some advanced metrics like Hayes, as they tend to do with low usage and efficient big men. On a per-minute basis Hayes looks like a solid contributor, shooting 64.7 percent from the field while pouring in reasonable points, rebounds and assists per-minute.

The main problem for Hayes is that he can’t translate a per-minute impact into a larger role. He is still incredibly thin, which means traditional centers and even large wings go right through him in the paint. He fouls steadily, also limiting his availability. On offense he can finish lobs and off of putbacks, but he isn’t able to do much else.

For New Orleans, they are still looking for a center of the future to pair with Zion Williamson. In our redraft, the Phoenix Suns are happy with a backup center who can be efficient in a small role behind DeAndre Ayton, and Hayes would bring that for them. He replaces Ty Jerome, a point guard with some upside to develop if he can stay healthy.

The Portland Trail Blazers have struggled mightily to find a forward they can rely on to pair with Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. Since drafting McCollum they have largely moved their first round picks for veteran help, but the one time they did take a forward, Nassir Little in 2019, it hasn’t yet worked out.

This time around in our 2019 NBA Redraft the Blazers get a re-do, and they take power forward Darius Bazley. 6’8″ with a 7’0″ wingspan, Bazley has all the tools to be a versatile switch defender against wings, forwards and even bigs. The problem thus far is that he hasn’t done a good job of putting those tools together.

If he can’t figure out the defense then he won’t have a place in the league, because he hasn’t figured out the offense yet either. He is a career 30.9 percent shooter from 3-point range, with a bottom-50 turnover percentage. His true shooting percentage (balancing 2-point and 3-point field goals with free throws) of 49.1 percent last season was fifth-worst in the entire league.

The outline is there, however. Bazley more than doubled his volume this past season but kept his overall field goal percentage the same, increasing his accuracy inside the arc while losing it outside. If he can maintain the volume while regaining his form just below league average, suddenly he is useful on offense. Put the defensive package together, and now we have a low-end starter.

For now, that’s all theoretical. The upside and the flashes are enough for him to stick around at the back of our redraft first round. If he plateaus this upcoming season he’ll likely drop out entirely. Either way, he has shown more than Portland’s original pick Nassir Little.

Only one player originally taken in the top 10 fell further than Rui Hachimura, as former sixth overall pick Jarrett Culver won’t be taken in this redraft. Hachimura originally went ninth to the Washington Wizards, and drops to 26th here after a lackluster pair of seasons in the nation’s capital.

The pride of Japanese basketball, Hachimura is not good enough at the things he is best at to excel in the NBA. That is, he has found success as a big forward with the ball in his hands creating offense, but he isn’t fast or athletic enough to do that at the NBA level. As an off-ball player his weaknesses are more pronounced.

Hachimura is not a minor bench piece, averaging 30.9 minutes per game for his career in 105 games. Even so, he has averaged just 1.6 assists per game, not able to translate his ball-handling into buckets for his teammates. His free-throw shooting is solid at 79.7 percent, but he has hit just 31.3 percent of his career 3-pointers.

Defensively Hachimura has improved since entering the league, unable to claim it as a strength but not crippling his teams either as a weak link. To last in the league he will need to be reliable on defense and translate his free-throw shooting into catch-and-shoot perimeter accuracy. That’s possible, and Hachimura is filled with talent, but so far the returns have been middling.

Back-to-back real-life Washington Wizards go in our redraft as Garrison Mathews goes here to the LA Clippers. Originally an undrafted free agent out of Lipscomb, Mathews is the archetype of a 3-and-D player and would fit on any contending team, especially the Clippers.

In 82 career games Mathews has played a low-usage role, putting up just 3.6 shots per game — and 3.0 of those have been 3-pointers, 83.3 percent of his attempts. He has shot 38.9 percent from deep, a figure backed up by his 89.1 percent from the free-throw line. Mathews is an elite shooter.

He is also a solid defender, although at 6’5″ he can’t hold up consistently against larger wings. Even so on a Washington team without plus defenders he played frequently at the 3; when he found time at the 2 his on-ball defense made a much more palpable impact.

There is not a future star hidden here, but in a better situation Mathews could be an important rotation player who isn’t played off the court. The Clippers originally took Mfiondu Kabengele here, a player they have already released. A two-way wing like Mathews would have been perfect for them to have this past postseason.

With the core of their dynasty still in place, the Golden State Warriors need to find pieces that complement their stars. In the original 2019 NBA Draft that player was Jordan Poole, and after a slow start he has developed nicely into a guard who can play alongside or behind Stephen Curry.

With Poole long gone, the Warriors here go for a wing with the profile of being a shooter. Windler has been beset by injuries in his young career, limiting him to just 31 games for the Cleveland Cavaliers, so the player he will become is still yet to be seen.

Just a 33.8 percent 3-point shooter thus far in the NBA, Windler shot 40.6 percent from distance in college including 42.9 percent as a senior. Everything from his mechanics to his free-throw shooting (77.8 percent in the NBA, 84.7 percent as a senior) says that he will be a good shooter. If he can be a great one, he becomes an NBA starter.

At 6’6″ he has the size to defend on the wing, either at the 2 or at the 3. He will never be an elite defender but he has the tools to get to passable. If he can stay reasonable healthy moving forward he can be a rotation player on the wing, here for the Warriors looking for shooting around their star players.

As a rookie, Eric Paschall found himself on a bad team in need of someone to create offense. The Golden State Warriors lost Kevin Durant to free agency, Andre Iguodala to trade and Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry to injury. He excelled, making the first-team All-Rookie squad as he averaged 14 points per game.

In his second season Paschall’s role changed dramatically, from point forward to backup center on a team with playoff aspirations. Paschall struggled with injuries all season, but when he was in the lineup he struggled to carve out a role. Outside of a handful of games where he excelled as the smallball center, his impact was minimal as a sophomore.

Paschall isn’t dynamic enough with the ball in his hands to take it out of Curry’s hands, or even Jordan Poole’s. That means he has to prove he can be an off-ball role player, and that likely means learning to shoot. After shooting just 28.7 percent from 3-point range as a rookie he improved that to 33.3 percent last season. If that number gets above average he has some utility as a backup big.

The San Antonio Spurs originally took Keldon Johnson with this pick, who went fifth in our redraft. They get a much worse player here, but head coach Gregg Popovich has excelled with utilizing unique players like Paschall and could fashion a role for him off the bench similar to Boris Diaw during their final years of contention.

The first round of the 2019 NBA Redraft concludes with the Cleveland Cavaliers’ third pick in the first 30, a pick they originally used on Kevin Porter Jr. While Porter went 10 picks earlier in the redraft, he was also a massive bust for the Cavaliers, who traded him away after multiple behavioral issues.

Here they use the pick on Goga Bitadze, a 6’11” Georgian center who has been buried on the Indiana Pacers. He has averaged just 10.4 minutes per game, which is both a product of being on a team with two proven centers ahead of him and relatively slow development from Bitadze.

Even with the limited minutes, his per-minute numbers are stout. His per-36 averages are 14.8 points, 9.6 rebounds and a whopping 3.9 blocks. That’s the area where Bitadze excels the most, defending the rim in a drop coverage. His size and strength wall off the most valuable part of the court from opposing teams.

Bitadze is not a floor spacer on offense, nor a high-level passer. His role will need to be as a screener rolling to the basket, where he can use his size and strength for finishing; to this point he has been inconsistent in making contact with screens. If he can earn more playing time and continue developing he could one day be a reliable starting center, but that’s enough of an “if” for him to fall to 30 in the redraft.

2019 NBA Redraft: Just Missed the Cut

Players listed in no particular order

Grant Williams, PF, Tennessee – Williams’ lack of an outside shot or elite athleticism limits his impact, but he is an intelligent player who found a consistent role in Brad Stevens’ rotation.

Naz Reid, C, LSU – A stretch-5, Reid has been able to step in as Karl-Anthony Towns’ backup and allow the Timberwolves to run a similar offense. His upside is minimal, but his ability to space the court means he should stick in a rotation somewhere for a long time.

Cody Martin, SF, Nevada – The “Martin twins” both play for the Charlotte Hornets, and Cody is the better of the pair. He can’t shoot, but he is a tough defender who has earned playing time the hard way.

John Konchar, SG, Purdue-Fort Wayne – The Memphis Grizzlies go 15 players deep on their roster, so Konchar has not had a lot of playing time. When he has played he has been a sharpshooter with some upside to carve out a longtime spot in the league.

Sekou Doumbouya, PF, France – One of the youngest and most raw players in the draft, Doumbouya has developed very slowly and is still a project at this point.

Nassir Little, PF, North Carolina – Once a top-5 prospect, Little had a poor freshman season and hasn’t shown much in two seasons in the league. There’s the potential for an impact player buried in there somewhere, but no one can have confidence he will ever realize it.

Moses Brown, C, UCLA – The Thunder’s tanktastic rotation of young players this past season opened an opportunity for Moses Brown to demonstrate his ability, and he became a walking double-double. Now with the Celtics, he will need to show if he can contribute to winning or just to stat-padding.

Oshae Brissett, SF, Syracuse – Out of nowhere, a brutally injured Indiana Pacers team called on Oshae Brissett and he balled out down the stretch this past season. With just 40 career games under his belt Brissett will need to show over a larger sample that he is an NBA rotation player.

Romeo Langford, SF, Indiana – Another top recruit who had an inconsistent freshman season, injuries have held Langford back from whatever development he may have shown. He’s still somewhat of an unknown even two seasons in.
