At NBA All-Star Weekend, it was announced that Phoenix Suns point guard Chris Paul will miss 6-8 weeks with a fracture in his thumb, meaning he could miss the rest of the regular season.
While Phoenix did add Aaron Holiday at the trade deadline, they have dealt with a bunch of injuries in their backcourt this year. Paul is the latest, but even Cameron Payne has missed some time.
As players begin to get bought out and seek new teams, the Suns will surely be a top choice. And for Phoenix, adding another guard to the roster could be in their best interest.
At the very least, it would ensure that they have some depth down the stretch of the season. What guards could the Suns look to pick up on the buyout market?
3 targets for the Phoenix Suns after the Chris Paul injury – Langston Galloway
If the Suns want to improve their backcourt without harming the chemistry of the team, why not bring in a familiar face who has played with most of the guys on the roster?
Langston Galloway was on the Suns just last season when they made their run to the NBA Finals. He didn’t play heavy minutes but was very effective in the minutes that he did get.
The 30-year-old guard averaged 4.8 points while shooting 44.9 percent from the field and 42.4 percent from three-point range. Who’s to say he couldn’t provide that same production this year?
Phoenix already brought back Torrey Craig, so they’re clearly okay with bringing back former players. Continuing that trend with Galloway would make a bunch of sense.

3 targets for the Phoenix Suns after the Chris Paul injury – Quinn Cook

Quinn Cook has yet to appear in the NBA this season, but just last year he played 23 games with two different teams – the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers.

Obviously, Cook won’t be able to replicate the passing of Chris Paul, and there aren’t any guards on the market that will be able to do that. But he does bring something else to the table – shooting.

Over the course of his career, Cook is a 40.8 percent three-point shooter. Last season, in the 23 games he played, Cook shot 42.3 percent from behind the arc.

The 28-year-old guard is most known for his time with the Golden State Warriors, where he won two rings. Although he didn’t play a super huge role in the postseason, he was a part of their regular-season rotation.

If the Suns were to sign Cook, they could delegate most of the playmaking duties to Devin Booker, thus allowing Cook to thrive in the off-ball role he’s been known for.

Simply bolstering the guard rotation should be the goal for the Suns, as they will never be able to find someone that can bring what Paul brings to the court.

By signing Cook, they would be getting a guy who can shoot the ball at an elite clip. Outside of Booker and Landry Shamet, he would instantly become the best shooter in Phoenix’s backcourt.

3 targets for the Phoenix Suns after the Chris Paul injury – Kris Dunn

While Quinn Cook would provide solely shooting and not much else, Kris Dunn would give the Phoenix Suns almost the exact opposite of that, as he’s notoriously not a great shooter.

However, Dunn has made a career out of playing elite-level defense and passing the ball well. He has yet to appear in the NBA this season but played big minutes during his time in Chicago.

The 27-year-old hasn’t made it to the main stage this season, he should still be fully capable of bringing that same defensive-minded style of play for the Suns.

Twice in his career, Dunn has averaged 2.0 steals per game, and he’s also eclipsed the 6.0 assists per game mark twice as well. While he wouldn’t get enough minutes to put up those numbers in Phoenix, that’s the sort of play he brings to the table.

With players such as Devin Booker, Cameron Payne (upon return), Landry Shamet, and Aaron Holiday already in the backcourt, adding a two-way threat who can pass and defend could be helpful.

Again, Dunn wouldn’t be playing a huge role for the Suns, but if they ever needed a defensive stopper and/or extra playmaking, Dunn would definitely be of use.
