Over the past few years, the Utah Jazz have been one of the best regular-season teams in the NBA. This year isn’t exactly going to plan.
At the start of the year, everything looked fine. They were off to another hot start and primed to be one of the best teams in the Western Conference.
However, after going 2-8 in their last 10 games, maybe some NBA trades are in order? While blockbuster moves are highly unlikely, would they be open to the idea?
NBA Trades: 2 Rudy Gobert trades to reshape the Jazz
Donovan Mitchell is the young star, so would they ever consider trading Rudy Gobert? Almost certainly not. Gobert is a severely underrated player, despite having won Defensive Player of the Year three times now.
In fact, the Jazz are looking to add perimeter defenders at the trade deadline to help make life easier for their big man. So trading him away is definitely not in their plans.
NBA Trades are fun to look at, though. Gobert is a somewhat controversial player because of the way he went out in the playoffs last year, so thinking about his trade value is interesting.
He’s very clearly the best defensive center in the NBA. Most versatile? No. But in terms of overall defensive impact and presence, there isn’t anyone better than Gobert.
What sort of teams around the league would be willing to make a move for him? What kind of trade offers would Utah get in return for the All-Star-caliber center? Why would the NBA trades benefit both sides?

NBA Trades: 2 Rudy Gobert trades to reshape the Jazz – Portland Trail Blazers

Trail Blazers receive: Rudy Gobert, Rudy Gay

Jazz receive: Norman Powell, Robert Covington, Jusuf Nurkic, 2023 First-Round Pick, 2025 First-Round Pick

If the Portland Trail Blazers want to seriously alter the make-up of their franchise, this is one way to do it. At the same time, the Utah Jazz would receive the necessary assets to remain competitive.

For Portland, this trade is solely focused on improving their otherwise abysmal defense. Adding Rudy Gobert to the mix would undoubtedly help.

Throwing Gobert down low would essentially give the Blazers a safety net on that end of the floor. They could then focus on adding better perimeter defenders around him to really shore up that defense.

Looking at this deal from Utah’s perspective, it definitely helps their depth. They would trade in their All-Star for three starting-caliber NBA players.

Norman Powell is on the books for a while and would be a great scoring punch alongside Donovan Mitchell. His efficient shooting would fit right in with the Jazz.

Robert Covington is a guy the Jazz are reportedly interested in, anyway, although this definitely isn’t how they’ll go about getting him. He’s an extremely versatile defensive presence who can also shoot the three ball.

Lastly, Jusuf Nurkic would provide them with a replacement center. He’s a big body down low that can fill up the stat sheet on any given night. Overall, not a bad trade for their defensive genius of a big man.

NBA Trades: 2 Rudy Gobert trades to reshape the Jazz – Charlotte Hornets

Hornets receive: Rudy Gobert, Joe Ingles

Jazz receive: Gordon Hayward, Kelly Oubre Jr., PJ Washington, Mason Plumlee, 2023 First-Round Pick

Another team that is awful on the defensive side of the floor, the Charlotte Hornets would begin to fix that with this trade by adding the center they desperately need.

Meanwhile, the Utah Jazz would once again get some solid depth to put around Donovan Mitchell as they continue to remain competitive in the West.

Adding Rudy Gobert to the Hornets would almost certainly help them on the defensive end. Putting a guy of his caliber would, in theory, be enough to transform any team into a top-15 defense in the league.

The only downside to this deal for the Hornets is that Gobert doesn’t exactly fit their timeline. So if they don’t think they can win right now, then there’s no point.

On the flip side, the Jazz would bring back a familiar face in Gordon Hayward. He would give them some versatility at the forward position as both a shooter and solid defender.

Kelly Oubre Jr. would fit well in Utah, too. He could assume a nice role of the bench as a sparkplug scorer alongside Jordan Clarkson, forming a nasty scoring punch off the bench.

Meanwhile, Mason Plumlee would be their short-term replacement at the center position, and PJ Washington would be a nice long-term big man project. Not a terrible deal if the Jazz wanted to move on from Gobert (which they almost certainly do not).
