NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 28. Detroit Pistons
Cade Cunningham is the sole reason to watch this team, barring the occasional Isaiah Stewart meltdown. He plays with poise for a rookie, moving in an unhurried but purposeful way, and he’s quickly mounting a campaign for Rookie of the Year.
Unfortunately, “unhurried” is rarely attached to an exciting player, so for League Pass and viewing purposes, he only helps so much.
NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 27. Sacramento Kings
This team’s recent three-game winning streak has them showing signs of life, but they’ve been a brutal watch for most of the season. De’Aaron Fox, Tyrese Haliburton, and Buddy Hield have all started slowly and aren’t clicking together as hoped.
Davion Mitchell’s defense is a joy, but his shot has abandoned him. Richaun Holmes and Harrison Barnes are playing well but are nobody’s idea of a thrilling watch. This team feels ripe for a trade, either to bolster the ranks for a playoff run or to add assets for a rebuild.
NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 26. Portland Trail Blazers
This team hasn’t been that bad, record-wise, but the vibes from this team have been truly horrendous. Never mind all the front-office drama, which doesn’t impact these rankings.
Chauncey Billups isn’t clicking with the players on the roster. Damian Lillard is off to a cold start. I’m pretty sure Jusuf Nurkic hasn’t dunked in three years. Norm Powell is fun, and when Lillard or CJ is cookin’, they’re as entertaining as any player in the league… but CJ has a collapsed lung and seems highly likely to be traded.
If a certain 76ers point guard is traded here, the Blazers will shoot up these rankings, but until then, they languish in the bottom five. At least they have a solid broadcast team.
NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 25. Oklahoma City Thunder
Despite their ranking, these guys have been a pleasant surprise overall. Considering half the roster sounds like a 2K simulated college class, they’ve been feisty on defense, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has brought the highlights.
Josh Giddey is already one of my favorite passers in the league. Poku is always interesting, in a NASCAR-crash kind of way. This team is still horrendous overall, though, and boring jerseys and a terrible broadcast team drag down their ranking. I haven’t decided how I feel about the unique silver-grey court yet, but I lean towards hating it.
a legit MVP candidate for the first month of the season, Kyle Kuzma has been grabbing rebounds with a new ferocity, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has been playing some of the best basketball of his life.

The Wiz are 15-11 and firmly in the hunt for a top-six seed. And yet, they just aren’t really exciting to watch most nights. Bradley Beal has been off to a slow start, as has Spencer Dinwiddie.

They’ve cooled off in the last two weeks, and some of the underlying statistics suggest that they are a middle-of-the-pack team at best. I think they’ll pull it together and stay in the playoff mix, but a return to form for their starting guards would boost this team’s League Pass ranking.

NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 19. Boston Celtics

This is about as low as any team with stars like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown could rank. Those two players each have the capability to pop off for 40+ on any given night. Marcus Smart defends like hell and throws his body around with abandon.

Time Lord Robert Williams has been an ideal rim-running, shot-blocking center with underrated passing vision. And yet, something about this team leaves the viewer cold. Their offense feels mechanical.

They take a lot of mid-range shots that don’t go in often. The players just seem like they’re doing a job, instead of playing a game, and that lack of enthusiasm seeps through the screen. On the plus side, they have some of the best jerseys in the league.

NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 18. New York Knicks

The Knicks would be lower if it weren’t for the birth of the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2021/12/12/nba-league-pass-power-rankings/2/"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkhrUM35CQo%22 target="_blank" rel="noopener">“Bing Bong” video. Similar to the Celtics, this team has just felt a little off all year. A mixture of too-high expectations and some disappointing free-agent additions (sorry, Kemba) has led to a team that is plummeting down the standings in both real life and in the League Pass Rankings.

The offense hasn’t gotten much better, the defense is significantly worse, and coach Thibodeau can’t seem to unlock the right starting lineup. Madison Square Garden is still the most beautiful court in the league, and the Knicks have at least played mostly competitive games without too many blowouts. Obi Toppin is a one-man fast break.

NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 17. Dallas Mavericks

Luka Doncic carries them to an average-ish League Pass ranking. Although he’s clearly playing his way into shape, he still offers an insane mix of shotmaking and passing that is beautiful when it’s clicking. His penchant for late-game heroics is incredible:

Kristaps Porzingis has been improved this year and plays a unique style that sets him apart from any of his peers. I always chuckle when Maxi Kleber blocks a surprised opponent. The occasional Boban sighting is always a delight, too.

NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 16. Toronto Raptors

This might be a bit too high, but I love watching the Raptors. VanVleet’s exuberant celebrations might get <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2021/12/12/nba-league-pass-power-rankings/2/"https://www.si.com/nba/76ers/news/raptors-fred-vanvleet-fined-nba-obscene-gesture-sixers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">penalized in real life, but they’re rewarded here.

Coach Nick Nurse is always running unorthodox defenses and ATO plays. Scottie Barnes has been a revelation as a playmaking rookie forward, and Pascal Siakam’s return adds another high-energy guy. The broadcast crew is excellent.

Dalano Banton never stops running, and watching the willowy 6’7″ point guard push the pace is exhilarating. They’re penalized a bit because there are stretches where the half-court offense gets stuck in the mud. I’m not sure the Raptors are any good, exactly, but they are a very enjoyable team to watch.

NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 15. Philadelphia 76ers

Joel Embiid remains the apex evolution of the traditional (-ish) big man. He’s got a bruising back-to-the-basket game but has developed into a credible shooter with a nasty defensive game, to boot.

Seth Curry is arguably the second-best shooter in the game today. Matisse Thybulle stays attached to his mark like their shadow. Tyrese Maxey gets into the paint at will and provides the off-the-dribble verve the team desperately needs.

Furkan Korkmaz was an excellent watch earlier in the year, with a surprising handle and audacious vision, although his minutes have ticked down recently. Danny Green provides a surprising number of blocks and steals just by being in the right place at the right time, all the time.

NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 14. Atlanta Hawks

It’s a great thing for the league that a highlight factory like Atlanta can barely crack the top half of the League Pass rankings. Trae Young is the only player in the top-five of both points and assists, and he has an incredible ability to both shoot from deep and throw pinpoint-accurate lobs.

John Collins can and will dunk on anyone. Bogdan Bogdanovic has a quiet swag and a killer’s confidence shooting the ball and attacking the rim. A rash of injuries may be a blessing in disguise, as it simplifies the rotation and ensures that everyone still healthy will get ample playing time.

NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 13. Minnesota Timberwolves

Terrific announcers set the stage for an intriguing collection of players. Watching Jarred Vanderbilt’s frenetic defense makes me break a sweat just sitting on the couch.

Karl Anthony-Towns remains the smoothest seven-foot scorer you’ve ever seen, equally comfortable bombing from deep, attacking off the bounce, or posting up down low. Anthony Edwards might kill someone with a dunk one day.

Patrick Beverley’s incessant trash talking and physical defense are entertaining (in small doses). D’Angelo Russell may have questionable shot selection but remains a crunch-time killer.

This team should be higher, but they go through long stretches of weirdly somnambulant play. Consistency is the key to real-life standings and League Pass rankings, so despite a very high ceiling for watchability, I have the Wolves comfortably in the middle here.

<a class="next-slide-btn" style="background:#222423" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="next-slide-shortcode" href=https://hoopshabit.com/2021/12/12/nba-league-pass-power-rankings/2/"#"> Next: 12 - 9

NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 12. Utah Jazz

The Jazz’s on-court product remains an excellent viewing experience. Rudy Gobert’s spider-like limbs stretch out from across the court to alter shots, Mike Conley shoots floaters with both hands, and Donovan Mitchell’s surge has him looking like one of the best guards in the world.

But we’ve pretty much seen this all before, so I have to penalize Utah for a lack of spice. It remains a beautiful game to watch, but after several years of the same cast of characters running the same plays, I’m ready for something with a little more flavor.

NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 11. Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers, predicted to be one of the worst teams in the league at the start of the season, have weathered an injury to their leading scorer (Collin Sexton) and still remain the six seed in the East.

Point guard Darius Garland has flourished in Sexton’s absence, showing uncanny patience in the pick and roll and an advanced feel for how to perfectly time his various lobs and floaters to confuse the defense.

But this team is ranked here for its trio of big men. NBA teams don’t start three seven-foot (-ish) guys anymore, ever, and it’s amazing to see just how much space they can cover.

Lauri Markannen will unleash a ferocious dunk once every few games, and Jarrett Allen has shown off some surprisingly sweet post moves. Rookie Evan Mobley is the real deal. He makes defense an exciting spectator sport, and might well earn an All-Defensive Selection as a rookie.

I don’t know if the Cavs can keep it up, but I do know that I’ll be watching every step of the way. They are penalized a little for egregiously bad color commentary from Austin Carr, whom I have to mute.

NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 10. Denver Nuggets

This team has been ravaged by injuries, but no team featuring reigning MVP Nikola Jokic can ever fall out of the top 10. He’s the best and most creative passer in the league, and it’s not even close.

He can also drain from deep or bully a smaller defender (and pretty much everyone is smaller than him), which makes for a pleasingly diverse offensive game. For someone without much lateral or vertical quickness, Jokic also attacks the ball on defense and gets a lot of deflections, steals, and blocks.

Jokic leads the league in basically every advanced stat, and he would be a shoo-in for a repeat MVP at this point if it weren’t for Steph Curry and the Warriors.

Aaron Gordon has had a nice bounce-back campaign. Bol Bol will always make you do a double-take the first time you see him. But really, this is about watching the most versatile and talented big man of our generation try and raise up an increasingly disparate group of players to something resembling a functional team.

NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 9. Brooklyn Nets

Boring colors, boring courts, boring uniforms. But a team can’t be boring when it has Kevin Durant, putting on an absolute clinic in how to shoot a basketball. Your mileage may vary when it comes to watching James Harden, but it’s undeniable that he’s one of the most skilled players in the league.

Patty Mills zipping around the court and launching threes with abandon is a delight. For NBA diehards, watching how coach Steve Nash uses DeAndre’ Bembry and Bruce Brown as positionless havoc-wreakers is fascinating (Nash does not get enough credit for how inventive he’s been as a coach these last couple of years).

Even without Kyrie Irving, this remains an eminently watchable team backed by the best broadcast crew in the league in Ian Eagle, Richard Jefferson, and Sarah Kustok.

NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 8. Miami Heat

<a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2021/12/12/nba-league-pass-power-rankings/2/"https://www.nba.com/news/miami-heat-bam-adebayo-thumb-surgery" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bam Adebayo’s diagnosis was a brutal break for a Miami team that’s been scuffling under a heavy injury burden. At their best, this is a top-five team: physical, switching, angry defense with enough passing intelligence and all-around skill to excite any viewer.

However, they’ve struggled to find a groove, and Bam’s extended absence makes it less likely they find one in the immediate future. Eric Reid’s understated “Kaboom!” after Miami threes is a signature phrase, and while people have mixed feelings on the court and uniforms, they’re always visually interesting.

This is a higher ranking than the Heat have deserved thus far, but the flashes we’ve seen have convinced me that they will be a prime League Pass team once everyone’s back on the court.

NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 7. Phoenix Suns

A sneaky fact about the NBA – Chris Paul teams are never that exciting to watch. He always plays at a snail’s pace, doesn’t turn it over (fewer fast breaks = fewer highlights), and rarely showcases the flashy handles and passes that we know he has in his bag in favor of a workmanlike dedication to making the mathematically-best play every time down the court.

This year is different:

https://twitter.com/SportsCenter/status/1460076300530438153

The Suns are pushing the ball with abandon, playing crazy good basketball on both sides of the court, and somehow look better than last year’s runner-up squad despite changing few pieces.

Mikal Bridges might be a Steph-stopper on defense, Deandre Ayton has been playing to earn a max contract, and Devin Booker’s having the best long-range shooting season of his career.

NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 6. Memphis Grizzlies

Ja Morant’s absence hasn’t quelled the joy from a Memphis team trying to prove it’s taken a step forward. Morant remains the gas that fuels this team’s fire, and he brings an infectious cheer that can brighten up anyone’s day.

In an age where most NBA stars snarl and scowl to show their tough-guy superiority, Morant’s constant smiles and laughter at his own amazingness are a ray of sunshine.

Dillon Brooks has returned to talk immense amounts of trash, Jaren Jackson Jr. is finally looking like “The Unicorn Who Was Promised”, and Desmond Bane has taken a leap in his second season. The uniforms and colors are top-notch.

(Plus, my wife walked by the TV the other day, stopped, and asked “Who is that handsome man?” in reference to Bane. So, he’s got that going for him, as well).

NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 5. Los Angeles Lakers

Injuries have sapped this squad of some of their early-season interest, but watching Frank Vogel try to maximize the LeBron-AD-Westbrook lineups is fascinating. Whatever you want to say about Westbrook, he’s always been a must-watch player.

LeBron and Davis are still finding their way, but the sheer star power on this team is always a draw. They haven’t looked great yet, but I’m anticipating a big run sometime in the second half of the season once the health has returned and the frictions of new teammates and styles have been overcome. The return of “Showtime” isn’t far away.

NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 4. Milwaukee Bucks

We have never seen a player like Giannis Antetokounmpo. That fact seems self-evident, but I don’t think it’s appreciated enough. Nobody with his size and strength has ever played as much on-ball as he does, and he’s equally comfortable beating big men off the dribble as he is backing down and dunking on smaller, quicker defenders.

His fifty-piece in the clinching game of the Finals last year is one of the most legendary performances in NBA history, and he hasn’t missed a beat this season despite lingering injuries.

Jrue Holiday’s defense remains wildly entertaining, and Khris Middleton brings a dose of old-school mid-range ballet that will please your grumpy uncle who hasn’t watched a game in five years but complains that today’s basketball is too soft. The only reason they’re not higher is that they blow too many teams out and often have to sit Giannis.

NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 3. Charlotte Hornets

The sublime passing of LaMelo Ball and the Thor-hammer dunks of Miles Bridges are the ideal steak and wine pairing in the NBA. Adding Eric Collins’ screaming on the broadcast after every play is the sinful dessert afterward.

But there’s even more to this team than slick passes and high-flying alley-oops. Terry Rozier brings underrated late-game heroics and <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2021/12/12/nba-league-pass-power-rankings/2/"https://lonzowire.usatoday.com/2021/11/23/watch-courtside-view-of-terry-roziers-crazy-handles-vs-wizards/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">on-ball wizardry. Gordon Hayward is sneaky-good at everything.

The Hornets in general play zero defense, so they’re always in high-scoring, close games. The uniforms and courts are eye-catching. This team just exudes fun.

NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 2. Chicago Bulls

This team is the mirror image of the Hornets, except they play an even better brand of basketball. Excitable announcers with a penchant for phrasemaking? Exit Eric Collins, enter Stacey King. Sweet alley-oop duo? Insert the other Ball brother, Lonzo, and Zach LaVine (or Alex Caruso, or DeMar DeRozan, or Derrick Jones Jr…).

This team can play any sort of style, so every Bulls game feels a little different from the prior one. DeRozan has the best mid-range footwork in the league, and he can get his shot off against anybody at any time.

Caruso can throw down, but also creates chaos on the defensive end, which gives the Bulls the nod over the Hornets for second-place in these rankings.

NBA League Pass Power Rankings: 1. Golden State Warriors

I mean, was there any doubt? The Warriors have surpassed even the rosiest expectations this year. Draymond Green quarterbacks the defense and drops slick dimes. Andrew Wiggins is playing the best two-way basketball of his career. Gary Payton II is a must-watch when he’s on the court, as opposing point guards are literally scared to dribble around him. But this is about one man:

What is this? Who does that? Stephen Curry does things with a basketball that are literally unprecedented. We’ve never before seen this kind of talent married to that green of a light, where a player has carte blanche to do anything they want and the skill to follow through with it.

Curry is the most amazing thing to watch in the NBA, and no one else is really in the conversation. Proof? We were literally just<a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2021/12/12/nba-league-pass-power-rankings/2/"https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/stephen-curry-is-shooting-worse-than-lakers-russell-westbrook-and-thats-great-news-for-the-warriors/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> talking about him making 16 threes in one game as if it was a legitimate coin-flip possibility. Enjoy watching Steph as much as you can, because the NBA has never seen anything like him before.
