Top 5 biggest snubs from the 2021-22 All-NBA Teams: 5. Jaylen Brown
While his teammate, Jayson Tatum, has ascended to superstar status, Jaylen Brown is inching towards All-NBA status himself. He’s already emerged as one of the best second options in the entire league.
The 25-year-old arguably took a slight step back this season, while still proving to be one of the league’s best. Brown averaged 23.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game while also dishing out a career-high 3.5 assists per game.
Brown took another step forward on the defensive end, too. While the numbers don’t seem eye-popping, Brown had 3.4 defensive win shares this season, according to Basketball-Reference. That’s the most he’s had in any season of his career.
His usage also demonstrates his ever-growing importance to the Celtics. His usage percentage this year was 30.5 percent, the highest of his career. He ranked 15th in the league, his second straight year ranking in the top 20.
Brown sometimes doesn’t get the national recognition he deserves, as evidenced by his three lone Third Team All-NBA votes. Tatum deserves the publicity he gets and Marcus Smart is certainly vocal, but the Celtics wouldn’t be in the Eastern Conference Finals without Brown.
Like his superstar teammate, Brown is still ascending. While he didn’t repeat his All-Star trip from last season, an All-NBA appearance may very well be in his future.

There are plenty of worthy names on the All-NBA teams, but which players were snubbed from the important accolade?

It’s hard to take a major issue with any of these players, all of whom showed signs of being at the top of their games at some point this season. But there are other players who made a push for a spot and could be considered snubs, even if choosing who they should replace is tricky business.

Center is a particularly challenging position to decide. The amount of space available is smaller, feeding into an argument that maybe these rosters should be more bereft of positions. Jokic and Embiid were the two best players in the league this year and snubbing one from the First Team feels silly.

Let’s go through the five biggest exclusions from the All-NBA rosters.

Top 5 biggest snubs from the 2021-22 All-NBA Teams: 4. Donovan Mitchell

Donovan Mitchell is one of two members of the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2022/05/28/snubs-all-nba-teams/2/"https://hoopshabit.com/western-conference/utah-jazz/">Utah Jazz that had a legitimate All-NBA case. Neither of them made it, though, and one of the most intriguing questions of the offseason is whether they’ll go forward together or not.

Mitchell has averaged at least 20 points per game in all five of his seasons in the league. This past year was no different, with Mitchell averaging 25.9 points per game. He also nabbed a career-high 5.3 assists per game and matched a career-high 1.5 steals per game.

This is the fourth straight season that Mitchell has been a top-15 scorer in the league. This year, however, was the first time he cracked the top ten, ranking ninth. His steals per game were good enough for 11th in the NBA.

Mitchell also landed in the top ten for offensive box plus/minus this season, with every player ahead of him on one of the All-NBA teams. He’s two spots ahead of Towns, four spots ahead of Tatum, and six spots ahead of Booker in the metric.

Maybe Mitchell’s turnover problem is keeping him out of the running. He hit 200 turnovers on the nose this year, the third time he’s eclipsed that benchmark in his career. But that’s just the natural consequence of having the ball in his hands at almost all times.

Mitchell is still young and has the makeup of a future All-NBA player. The only question is who he’ll be playing for when he reaches that status.

Top 5 biggest snubs from the 2021-22 All-NBA Teams: 3. Bam Adebayo

At the stacked center position, it’s not a surprise Bam Adebayo didn’t make it onto an All-NBA team, but he did have a legitimate case for inclusion.

This was the best season of Adebayo’s career. He averaged a double-double for the second time, posting an average of 19.1 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. The points were the best of his career.

Adebayo also flashed some stealing skills this season. The center has averaged at least one steal per game in each of the past three seasons, but this season proved to be the apex of his thievery, averaging 1.4 steals per game.

His importance on the offensive end is growing. Adebayo’s usage percentage this season was 25 percent. Meanwhile, he’s working on cutting down on turnovers, dropping his turnover percentage to 14.4 percent.

Part of Adebayo’s improvement on the turnover front is his avoidance of sloppy passing. In 2019-20, he had 94 bad passes lead to turnovers, then 82 the following season. This year, however, he was down to only 59 bad passes.

Adebayo is one of the best defensive players in the league, even if the stats don’t always jump off the page. He’s finished in the top 15 for defensive win shares in each of the past three seasons and made the All-Defensive Second Team each of those years as well. His 104.2 defensive rating this season ranked third.

The big man may never be as much of a scoring threat as Jokic, Embiid, or Towns, but his contributions on the defensive end are all the <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2022/05/28/snubs-all-nba-teams/2/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/miami-heat/">Miami Heat really need from him. If he keeps improving on offense, All-NBA should be in the 24-year-old’s future.

Top 5 biggest snubs from the 2021-22 All-NBA Teams: 2. Rudy Gobert

Like Adebayo, Rudy Gobert’s upward mobility on the All-NBA roster was impacted by the glut of centers in front of him. And like his teammate, there’s a legitimate question as to where Gobert will be contending for this honor next year.

Still, it was another big year for the French big man. Gobert averaged a double-double for the sixth-straight season. He was just a few buckets away from setting a career-high in scoring, averaging 15.6 points per game. His 14.7 rebounds per game were a career-best and led the NBA.

Rebounding isn’t the only area where Gobert led the NBA – in fact, it’s one of many. He also had the best field goal percentage (71.3 percent), two-point field goal percentage (71.8 percent), effective field goal percentage (71.3 percent), and true shooting percentage (73.2 percent).

Unsurprisingly, the advanced rebounding stats also put Gobert at the best level in the league. He led the NBA in total rebound percentage (25 percent) and defensive rebound percentage (36.3 percent). Gobert must be kicking himself for only finishing seventh in offensive rebound percentage.

Gobert couldn’t take his fourth Defensive Player of the Year crown, losing out to <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2022/05/28/snubs-all-nba-teams/2/"https://hoopshabit.com/eastern-conference/boston-celtics/">Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart. But his defense once again put him in elite company, earning All-Defensive First Team honors for the sixth consecutive season.

While Gobert can’t stroke it like the big men ahead of him on the All-NBA list, he is the premier defender at his position in the league. The case for his inclusion on an All-NBA team – which would’ve been his fifth appearance – is warranted for that alone.

Top 5 biggest snubs from the 2021-22 All-NBA Teams: 1. Jimmy Butler

It’s kind of absurd that no players from the Eastern Conference’s top team during the regular season made an All-NBA team. Adebayo had a legitimate case for inclusion, and so did star forward Jimmy Butler.

For the second straight season, Butler was the team’s most productive player. The forward averaged 21.5 points, 7.1 assists, and 6.9 rebounds per game. While he didn’t repeat leading the league in steals, he still averaged a healthy 1.6 swipes per game.

The forward’s versatility was on full display throughout the season. Butler nabbed four triple-doubles for the second straight season and ranked in the top ten of the statistic for the fifth time in his career.

Butler has become a magnet for drawing fouls, drawing more than 200 shooting fouls for just the fourth time in his career. He also drew 14 offensive fouls, the second-most of his career.

The forward’s biggest issue is his three-point shooting, a flaw being exposed in the playoffs. He knocked down only 23.3 percent of his attempts from three, but he’s still very efficient from two, hitting 52 percent. He also set a career mark with an 87 percent mark from the free-throw line.

His struggles from three also have not done much to limit his abilities on the offensive end. Butler has been one of the consistent league leaders in offensive rating and was again this season, sporting a 123.7 rating on that end of the court.

Jimmy Butler was the best player on the best team in an entire conference this year. If that’s not good enough for All-NBA accolades, what is?
