The league will crown an NBA Bubble MVP for their play and the race is fierce between Damian Lillard, Devin Booker and Luka Doncic. Here is our Hoops Habit MVP ladder.
In light of the NBA bubble restart proceeding with flying colors, the league is going to show recognition for the players’ efforts in the eight seeding games, with awards including MVP. There’s a legitimate case to be made that the best basketball of the season has been played inside the bubble with the usual suspects (including players like Damian Lillard, Devin Booker and Luka Doncic with incredible performances) giving their all with some unexpected candidates emerging along the way.
The beauty of it all is that we’re seeing basketball in its purest form. Without the hassle of travel or homecourt advantage, these players are going out and leaving it all on the court, allowing their games to do the talking for them. We get to see the best of the best duke it out for playoff stature and a chance to win the most unusual NBA title in sports history.
Before we get on to the top-five candidates for Orlando Bubble MVP, here are the five honorable mentions who deserve recognition, but likely won’t be finalists for the award.
10. PF/C Kristaps Porzingis, Dallas Mavericks:
Most of Dallas’ roster is very solid within their roles but outside of Doncic, there wasn’t much star power on this team until they traded for Kristaps Porzingis. It took him some time to get re-acclimated to game-pace and intensity after rehabbing from an ACL tear, but Porzingis is back and better than ever.
Kristaps was dominant in six games in Orlando, averaging 30.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks. Unfortunately for him, he has another MVP candidate on his team, which greatly decreases his value in this conversation. Still, Porzingis gives the Mavs a shot to cause trouble in the postseason.
9. C Nikola Jokic, Denver Nuggets:
We’ve seen better from Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets than their .500 record in Orlando but you have to hand it to Jokic — He held it down for this team in their most desperate hour. Most of Denver’s most influential players are either working their way back or haven’t played in Orlando, but Jokic made it easier for the less-experienced players to leave their marks on this season. For that, he deserves to be recognized.
8. PG/SG Derrick White, San Antonio Spurs:
Believe it or not, the San Antonio Spurs had the fourth-best Net Rating in the NBA bubble despite coming in with no expectations. This was due largely to the leap that guard Derrick White showed in limited action. As he entered the starting lineup, the Spurs’ defense took a huge step forward.
White isn’t afraid to put his body on the line as he led all players in charges during the restart and chipped a tooth in the process. San Antonio’s net rating was 12.4 points better with White on the floor and the perimeter defense and three-level scoring he brought to the table gave them a legitimate shot at every game they participated in. That has to count for something.
7. SF/PF Jayson Tatum, Boston Celtics:
With the exception of his first game, Boston Celtics wing Jayson Tatum was exceptional as the leader of the team’s leader in Orlando. His 22.4 points and six rebounds per game were on-par with what he did during the second half of the season before the league shut down, which is still incredibly impressive.
For Tatum, it’s more about the ability to make his team better than anything. The Celtics needed star power to be a legitimate contender in the East and he’s finding it within himself to be that guy. If you remove his implosion against Milwaukee from his seven-game slate, Tatum was at 25.3 points per game.
6. SF/PF Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks:
Some may be surprised that Giannis Antetokounmpo isn’t higher on the list, but his play inside the bubble wasn’t all too surprising. What he did in Orlando was about what’s expected from him based on how he played out of it, so he doesn’t get into that top five.
Giannis is probably going to win the regular-season MVP, so giving him the NBA bubble MVP for six solid games at .500 isn’t going to cut it for this award.
into the Bubble MVP conversation isn’t something that anyone saw coming.

The Indiana Pacers desperately needed someone to step up in the place of All-Star Domantas Sabonis, who’s sidelined with plantar fasciitis. The logical answers would be Malcolm Brogdon, Victor Oladipo and Myles Turner, but it was Warren who stole the show through those eight seeding games.

Though he only appeared in six of the Pacers’ eight games, Warren led them to a 4-2 record in that span with the greatest eruption of his career. The six-year veteran averaged 31 points per game on 57.8 percent from the field, 52.4 percent on 3-pointers and 88.9 percent at the charity stripe. Warren is the inverse from his former teammate <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/08/15/nba-bubble-mvp-ladder-damian-lillard/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bookede01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Devin Booker in the sense that he is perceived as a mid-range guy when in reality, he’s expanded his range to well beyond the arc.

This isn’t a fluke either — Warren took 42 triples and drained 22 of them. They came from either elbow, above the break and in the corners with no regard for his defender’s presence. It felt like he channeled his inner-Klay Thompson and unleashed it to keep the Pacers in good standing for the postseason.

Defensively, Warren pushing himself to another level. His effort as a shot-blocker and interceptor of passes were influential to his team in those eight games and deserve to be recognized just as his scoring did.

4. Shooting guard James Harden, Houston Rockets

Where would the Houston Rockets be without their fearless leader, <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/08/15/nba-bubble-mvp-ladder-damian-lillard/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/hardeja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">James Harden? The argument that Harden should have at least two more MVPs is one that I’m willing to have an earnest conversation about as one of the most dominant scorers the sport has ever seen. In addition to being a one-man scoring machine who overwhelms the flow of the game, Harden is asserting his presence on every side of the floor this season.

Even though Harden is still a commanding presence as a scorer, averaging 35.3 points per game since the NBA restarted, he’s doing more than his usual 3-point barrage and free throw shooting routine. The former MVP has 18 steals in the restart, tying his teammate <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/08/15/nba-bubble-mvp-ladder-damian-lillard/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/covinro01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Robert Covington for the most in the NBA restart. This has been Harden’s most encouraging defensive season in quite some time, contesting jumpers and using his underrated strength to bully opponents.

Playing off of <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/08/15/nba-bubble-mvp-ladder-damian-lillard/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/westbru01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Russell Westbrook hasn’t changed his scoring output, but it has certainly helped him assert himself on that end. It’s amazing what happens when you don’t need to be responsible for a team’s ball-handling duties almost every time down the floor.

Houston is nothing without Harden. If he wasn’t on this team and Russ ran the show instead, I’m confident they’d be out of playoff contention completely, but Harden’s reassuring presence as the franchise star puts them into contention for the Western Conference Championship. In only six games, Harden finished third amongst guards in total rebounds and fifth in total assists. The Rockets’ Net Rating dropped from 10.2 to -10.8 with him off the floor for a colossal 21-point swing, further pointing to why Harden is a perennial MVP candidate and scoring leader in this league.

Maybe Luka Doncic is the flashy new guy in town and Lillard’s deep bombs from 3-point land are catching everyone’s attention, but let’s not get it twisted: Harden is the most prolific offensive player in basketball and I don’t foresee that changing any time soon.

3. Point guard/Small forward Luka Doncic, Dallas Mavericks

The regular season proved that the Dallas Mavericks aren’t to be taken lightly, but the eight seeding games told us that we should maybe take a step back before dubbing them title contenders. Dallas dropped three of their eight games, resulting in a first-round meeting with a heavily-favored LA Clippers team. It’s not ideal, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying on the part of sophomore sensation <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/08/15/nba-bubble-mvp-ladder-damian-lillard/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/doncilu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Luka Doncic.

All season long, Doncic has drawn comparison to <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/08/15/nba-bubble-mvp-ladder-damian-lillard/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jamesle01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">LeBron James and adjacent NBA greats that stuffed stat sheets at 21-years-old or younger. Luka didn’t let up inside the bubble, continuing his first All-Star season with a stretch of three triple-doubles in six games. Through his first six games in the bubble, Luka posted 32 points, 11 rebounds and 11.3 assists on 47.4 percent shooting from the field.

We can easily look at Luka’s extraordinary scoring ability and focus on it the whole night. To command such an overwhelming presence at such an early stage is unlike anything we’ve seen before. However, it’s the playmaking that sets Doncic apart from the pack.

The degree of difficulty on some of Luka’s passes is mind-boggling. He can drive-and-kick with the best of them, ranking third in assists per game from the drive during the restart. As a pick-and-roll ball-handler, Doncic can manipulate defenders into tracking his drive and drill a pass to his teammate for baskets. It doesn’t matter if his target is cutting, screening, flashing, spotting up or posting up — He’s delivered his passes on-time and on-target in the NBA bubble.

What’s truly scary is that Doncic has only just scratched the surface of what he can be in this league. Even if the Mavs get bounced in the first round and kicked out of Disney World, fans in Dallas should be elated about the next steps with their rising superstar at the helm.

2. Shooting guard Devin Booker, Phoenix Suns

If you told me in March that the NBA would finish its season at Disney World and that the Phoenix Suns would be the best team in the eight seeding games, I’d think that you were using hallucinogens. There was very little expectation that any team would go 8-0 in the Orlando bubble after four months off, let alone the second-worst remaining team up to that point.

Alas, 2020 has been an unlikely year and Suns star Devin Booker was tired of waiting for his moment.

His shooting was streaky and the coaching staff deserves a ton of credit, but Phoenix would never come close to this record without Booker leading the way. The 23-year-old put up 30.5 points and six assists per game on 50.3 percent shooting in Orlando. There’s a perception by those who don’t know his game that he’s a 3-point specialist, but Booker’s skillset is way more complex than that.

Booker is a master of the forgotten zone of the modern game: The mid-range. He took and made more middies than any player through the eight seeding games, knocking them down at 56.8 percent. His mastery of the pick-and-roll has become increasingly valuable, adjusting to whatever coverage is thrown at him by attacking bigs and breaking down guards.

In the past, Booker was forced to isolate and buy a bucket for himself, but head coach <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/08/15/nba-bubble-mvp-ladder-damian-lillard/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/willimo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Monty Williams has put him in a position to succeed. Using the “Point-Five” system inspired by the ghost of Spurs past, Williams has his players moving off the ball and making quick decisions in an up-tempo offense. Therefore, Booker is playing in a competent and helpful team set for the first time in his career and it’s paying off in boatloads.

Booker heard all of your criticisms about his “empty stats on a bad team” and used them as motivation. He’s the surefire leader of the only team to win-out in the Orlando bubble and now, he’s heading into the offseason knowing that there’ll be new expectations.

The 2020-21 season is going to be a very exciting one for one of the league’s best-kept secrets from the last five years.

1. Point guard Damian Lillard, Portland Trail Blazers

It came down to the very last game but ultimately, All-Star point guard <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/08/15/nba-bubble-mvp-ladder-damian-lillard/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/lillada01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Damian Lillard showed more promise than any other player in these eight seeding games. This unprecedented eight-game stretch is going to go down in history as one of the most iconic in NBA history as Lillard clawed back from a significant deficit to put his team in playoff contention.

Regardless of what happens in the Blazers’ play-in game against the Memphis Grizzlies, getting his team to this point is an incredible feat for the eighth-year phenomenon. Lillard put up 37.6 points per game on 49.7 percent shooting from the field, 43.6 percent from the 3-point line and 88.8 percent from the charity stripe. Nevermind the fact that he hit that high of percentage on 12.6 3-point attempts per game — Dame dominated every situation thrown at him.

Damian Lillard evaded double teams and launched triples from seemingly impossible range. He attacked bigs on the way to the rim, contorting his body and putting the ball in unblockable spots. During this stretch, Dame hit 54.5 percent of his catch-and-shoot jumpers and 41.6 percent on pull-up triples. He shot 69.1 percent of his shots in the restricted area, which is more efficient than <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/08/15/nba-bubble-mvp-ladder-damian-lillard/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jamesle01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">LeBron James, <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/08/15/nba-bubble-mvp-ladder-damian-lillard/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/goberru01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Rudy Gobert, <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/08/15/nba-bubble-mvp-ladder-damian-lillard/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/simmobe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Ben Simmons or <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/08/15/nba-bubble-mvp-ladder-damian-lillard/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/n/nurkiju01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Jusuf Nurkic.

When it’s Dame Time, there’s not much you can do besides send some extra help and pray for the best, but even then, there’s no guarantee that you can slow him down. He used the threat of his range and scoring ability to hold his opponents’ attention and set teammates up for buckets. Lillard finished second in total assists during the eight seeding games with 77, which averages out to 9.6 per contest.

Individual statistics can be telling of a player’s impact, but that doesn’t tell the complete story. Lillard is a stellar leader who sets the tone for his teammates and puts them in positions to succeed. It’s telling that Portland shot 5.6 percent better from the field with their leader on the court.

Dame didn’t just play 41.7 minutes per game in these eight games because he wanted to — His team needed him to. The team was completely out of sorts with him off the floor, dropping from a 1.4 net rating to -6.6 for a colossal eight-point per 100 possession swing.

If Damian Lillard took the Giannis approach and played around 30 minutes per game each night, he’d be on his way back to Rip City by now, but that’s just not Dame. The situation doesn’t allow for it, so Lillard gave his all every night out and now all his team needs is one victory over an injury-riddled Grizzlies squad to secure a first-round date with the Lakers. He’s the real NBA bubble MVP.
