With historically great players and years of success in their past, which Milwaukee Bucks players would help out the most on this current-day team?
Since 1968, the Milwaukee Bucks have put together powerhouses and competitive groups as a marquee franchise for the NBA. They’ve been home to some of the all-time greats like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Oscar Robertson, and now, Giannis Antetokounmpo, only have one ring to show for it.
This season is arguably their best opportunity to go out and compete for another championship since the won it in 1971. Though there are some talented teams and All-NBA caliber players to battle against on the road there, Milwaukee has been the best team in the East and is the most likely candidate to reach the NBA Finals.
Had they entered the season with just one more piece, they may have gone on to post a historic regular-season record and etched themselves in the history books. Granted, we didn’t get to see how the rest of this season plays out, but to this point in the 2019-20 slate, they have the highest win percentage for a season in Bucks history.
Though this team is fantastic, it’s not perfect and there are a handful of players from the past who could’ve been amazing under head coach Mike Budenholzer. For this exercise, I’m eliminating any player who is in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame as well as anyone in the Bucks’ top-10 all-time scoring list.
Today, we’re going to celebrate players who pitched into the greater success of this team, whether it be as a go-to contributor or a rotational player off the bench. This franchise has been home to a ton of talent including many players who’ve gone unrecognized, but not all of them are cut out for the modern NBA.
Everyone selected has a skill set that not only translates to the way the sport is played today, but to the greater construction of the 2019-20 Bucks roster.

1. Monta Ellis

A forgotten player of his era drafted in 2005, combo guard <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/06/01/milwaukee-bucks-5-former-players/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/e/ellismo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Monta Ellis had a 12-year run in the NBA before teetering off. At his best, he was a polarizing two-guard with a tendency to agitate opponents by shiting them around with his exquisite handles on one end and picking their pocket on the other. On the other end of the spectrum, Ellis took a lot of shots that he probably shouldn’t have and oftentimes had tunnel-vision as a scorer

Despite his shortcomings tendencies, Ellis was a fine player at 6-foot-3 with blistering speed and unparalleled confidence. His ability to create distance to get shots off at three different levels is something the Bucks would greatly benefit from. Though he got beat off the dribble at times and didn’t have the most brawny build, Ellis was great at generating steals and getting out on the fastbreak.

<a class="story-link-related-btn" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="story-link-related-shortcode" href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/06/01/milwaukee-bucks-5-former-players/"https://hoopshabit.com/2020/03/03/lebron-james-giannis-antetokounmpo-mvp/"> Related Story: Don't get it twisted: Giannis Antetokounmpo is still the MVP

If he could buy-in as a complementary piece instead of trying to run the show, Ellis would make an excellent secondary ball-handler to Giannis and point guard Eric Bledsoe. Defenders are naturally drawn toward the paint with Giannis Antetokounmpo leading the way which would give Ellis better spacing than he’s ever had before.

At his best, Ellis used his scoring threat to dish off five or six dimes per night. Having that additional presence at the two-guard that could initiate sets, score at will and dish off to shooters would put this Bucks team over the top.

Though he only played 103 games in Milwaukee, Ellis is remembered for helping that Bucks break a two-year playoff drought by serving as an on-court leader and go-to scorer. However, he never really got the chance to play for a legitimate playoff contender. He only played in 38 playoff games in his career for teams that didn’t have a true shot at going on a title run.

Given the opportunity, Ellis would buy-in to a team setting and help these Bucks win the title after posting the best record in the league this season.

2. Dale Ellis

Continuing our theme of former Bucks players with the same last name, <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/06/01/milwaukee-bucks-5-former-players/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/e/ellisda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Dale Ellis bounced around the league quite a bit in his playing days. He played 17 NBA seasons across six different franchises including two separate stints in Milwaukee, averaging 15 points and 3.1 rebounds in 120 career games. These numbers might not jump off the page, but Ellis provided an offensive spark to multiple franchises that led him to one All-Star game and an All-NBA selection in Seattle.

Over a 426-game span from 1987 to 1992, Ellis averaged 22.7 points per game on 49.7 percent shooting from the field and a noteworthy 40.9 percent shooting from deep. He was a player who was well beyond his years that teams would clamor for in the modern NBA for his size and offensive prowess, but never got much recognition at the height of his powers.

<a class="story-link-related-btn" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="story-link-related-shortcode" href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/06/01/milwaukee-bucks-5-former-players/"https://hoopshabit.com/2020/03/30/milwaukee-bucks-right-malcolm-brogdon/"> Related Story: Maybe the Bucks were right about Malcolm Brogdon

Ellis had a quick-trigger on his jump shot that afforded him many opportunities to get triples off with minimal space between him and his defender. The lowest 3-point percentage he ever posted was 35.8 percent in the 1986-87 season and for his career, Ellis hit 1,719 triples at 40.3 percent.

The Bucks are fourth amongst NBA teams in 3-point attempts per game, but they rank 16th in 3-point percentage. While the increased flow of attempts will naturally lower that percentage, having someone like Ellis could be influential in raising that percentage while drawing defensive attention away from other shooters like Kyle Korver and Wes Matthews.

Filling a lesser role than he did as a prolific scorer for the Sonics, Ellis would play a complementary role alongside Middleton for this Bucks squad. If he were on the team, Middleton would likely get to shift back to his natural two-guard position and the Bucks, who already have tremendous size, would get even bigger. This move would pay dividends against bigger playoff opponents like the Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers.

3. Alvin Robertson

The Bucks are a phenomenal defensive team through an through, but one statistical category where they fall a bit flat is steals. With 615 steals last season, the Bucks were 17th in the NBA when it was all said and done. Now, they’re tied with the Miami Heat for the 20th place amongst their competition.

Insert <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/06/01/milwaukee-bucks-5-former-players/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/roberal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Alvin Robertson, a former Defensive Player of the Year who led the league in steals three times and has the highest steals per game average of any player in NBA history at 2.7 per contest. Though he was a moderately talented offensive player as a 6’3″ shooting guard, Robertson’s bread and butter was picking his opponent’s pocket and putting on a show.

<a class="story-link-related-btn" data-track="shortcode" data-track-action="story-link-related-shortcode" href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/06/01/milwaukee-bucks-5-former-players/"https://hoopshabit.com/2020/04/22/remember-peak-larry-sanders-milwaukee-bucks/"> Related Story: Remember peak Larry Sanders on the Bucks?

Though he was never much of a shooter, Robertson could finish near the rim and more importantly, find his teammates in the toughest of situations. During four seasons with the Bucks, Robertson averaged 12.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.7 steals in just-under 31 minutes per game. Inserting a player like that on this Bucks team takes a historically impressive defensive unit and accelerates them to another level.

Starting at the two-guard, the aforementioned Matthews isn’t a world-beating player at this stage in his career. However, pushing him back to the bench and inserting Robertson would cause some floor spacing issues for the starting unit. Therefore, Robertson would make the most sense as a Sixth Man who played between the point guard and shooting guard positions in place of Matthews and Bledsoe throughout each game.

With a motor as high as Robertson’s, his playstyle is sure to translate across time.

4. Toni Kukoc

A seasoned veteran by the time he got to Milwaukee, NBA champion <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2020/06/01/milwaukee-bucks-5-former-players/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/k/kukocto01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-%22 target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" ref="nofollow">Toni Kukoc brings an innate toughness and competitive spirit to a team that would hugely benefit the Bucks this year. His presence off the bench as an auxiliary scorer, spot-up shooter and secondary ball-handler would provide an immense boost over someone like Ersan Ilyasova or Marvin Williams in that second unit.

Most remembered for his presence on the Chicago Bulls, Kukoc’s true ability was suppressed by the immense talent already on his team when he arrived in the United States. The same applies here, but Milwaukee still plays a more team-oriented style that keeps everyone involved frequently, unlike some of those Bulls teams where Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen did the majority of the scoring and initiating.

Kukoc would benefit from this Bucks team’s standout floor spacing, leaving room for him to slash to the basket or create space for jumpers. The Croatian Sensation a 3-point shooting stroke that he didn’t get to showcase all too often, maxing out at 4.2 triples per game during the 2002-03 season in Milwaukee. Playing with a team like this one might help Kukoc to change the perception of his career considering he was a relatively inefficient scorer.

In eight of his 13 NBA seasons, Kukoc shot worse than 44 percent from the field. For a frontcourt player, those are disappointing shooting percentages. However, the system that head coach Mike Budenholzer has implemented does a great job of putting players in position to be the best versions of themselves. Instead of conforming to Phil Jackson’s triangle, Kukoc could be himself and apply his best qualities to Milwaukee’s elite core of players.

Maybe Kukoc isn’t the difference-maker between this team going from contender to dynasty, but he’s a surefire upgrade over some of the bench pieces in place now.

Tobias is not the player that he was when he was traded from Milwaukee to Orlando as a sophomore in 2013. Once an untapped prospect with his whole career ahead of him, Harris has since established himself as one of the most versatile, reliable players in the sport.

This season, playing third in the pecking order behind Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid in Philadelphia, it’s become clear that Harris is primed for just about any role that he’s thrust in. Harris is averaging 19 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game this season on 55.7 percent true shooting. He fits great in this Milwaukee Bucks team’s mold of efficient scorers who don’t necessarily need the ball in their hands to make an impact.

Harris’ catch-and-shoot 3-pointer was a big part of the reason why the Sixers traded for him with the LA Clippers prepping for a run at Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. He’s shot 39.3 percent from deep including 44.5 percent on corner triples over the last three seasons for a total of 456 made threes. He’d fit right in with Coach Bud’s 3-point-heavy offensive system while putting some personal flair on it as well.

In the last three seasons across three different teams, it’s become clear that Harris can do a little bit of everything as a scorer. He’s great at playing within team sets with 44.3 percent of his 2-point field goal attempts being assisted, but is more than capable of going out and getting a bucket for himself. His shot selection is in line with the modern game’s adoration for interior shots and triples considering 55.5 percent of his shots come from three feet from the basket or 3-point range.

That offensive versatility would take some of the pressure off of Giannis, effectively allowing him to carry a lighter load and focus his attention where his team needs him the most instead of having the team lean so heavily on his presence. With a Big 3 of Giannis, Middleton and Harris, I’d have no problem proclaiming the Milwaukee Bucks as the clear-cut favorite to win the championship.

However, there are too many roadblocks in their way to make that proclamation just yet including Tobias’ actual team, as well as the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat in the East.

From an offensive standpoint, Harris would do dividends for this team, but there’s still a high probability that they’ll go out and compete for a championship with the team as currently constructed.
