All of a sudden, we are just a few short weeks away from the return of the NBA season. Free agency has settled down. Outside of whatever lays in Ben Simmons’s future, the trade scene is quiet. Now, all there is left to do is look ahead.
Let’s get started.
While Oklahoma City Thunder fans seem hesitant to relate what is going on with their team to the famous Philadelphia “Process”, it certainly is looking like another year of plenty of losing is ahead. The Thunder had an active draft, surprisingly taking Josh Giddey at six. They followed that up by trading out of the sixteenth pick and Alperen Sengun before adding Tre Mann and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl.
For the second season in a row, the Thunder look to be a fun young team that is not particularly interested in winning basketball games. Next year’s draft class is looked to be as impactful as this year’s, giving the team another chance after the lottery did not fall their way. Until then, the youth developing remains the only thing to tune in for.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was a borderline All-Star last season (averaging 23.7 points, 5.9 assists and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 41.8 percent from distance) before being shut down early. Lu Dort is a fan-favorite and elite defender who took a step as a shooter in his second season. Theo Maledon, Isaiah Roby and Darius Bazley all showed flashes last season. Then there is the current league king of flash, Aleksej Pokusevski. The lone veteran leader on the roster is Derrick Favors. But the way this process goes, he will likely be moved before the deadline for draft compensation.

Negative: the Orlando Magic are going to be a bad basketball team. Positive: the Orlando Magic finally chose a path that was not pursuing mediocrity for a first-round playoff drubbing. Fans of the team have to be thrilled that with direction came the drafting of Jalen Suggs. After being in the conversation for the top overall pick for much of the season, snagging the Gonzaga guard with the fifth pick was a boon for the franchise.

Suggs has the most star pedigree of any Magic player since Dwight Howard. He comes in as a proven winner and culture changer. Combined with his elite gifts on both sides of the ball, there are clear reasons for optimism. The roster fit is still suspect; the Magic are still employing Markelle Fultz, Cole Anthony, RJ Hampton and Michael Carter-Williams. Fultz should be back from injury at some point his season and may end up as the odd man out. He and Jonathan Isaac are the last remaining members of the former young core. If either could stay healthy they represent solid value for a team playing for ping pong balls.

Fear not, Magic fans. Suggs (and to a lesser extent Franz Wagner) is the type of player that will change the feeling of the franchise as more talent is incorporated around him. With a little lottery luck next season, the time at the bottom of the standings should be short-lived.

Getting the number one pick in a loaded draft is a great way to kick-start the restoration of the franchise. The Detroit Pistons added Cade Cunningham to an already promising young core. Saddiq Bey and Isaiah Stewart spent time with the US Select Team this summer. Killian Hayes profiles as an elite defender and passer. Add in newly minted Olympian Jerami Grant and newly-added Kelly Olynyk and there is finally a reason for optimism in the Motor City.

Despite the positivity surrounding the franchise after another presumably strong draft class, wins should not be expected to follow this coming season. The projected starting lineup of Hayes, Cunningham, Bey, Jerami Grant and Stewart have an average age of 22. Key players off the bench like Saben Lee, Hamidou Diallo and Frank Jackson are all 23 or younger. Despite the talent, there will be growing pains.

The Pistons will be a fun watch this season. They have plenty of young talent and will always have multiple playmakers on the court. However, this season is about progress and developing young talent. After adding the top pick in the draft, the culture is prepared to shift. If they could be bad enough to add another high lottery pick next season that will be the makings of a special future.

Lost: Kelly Olynyk, Sterling Brown, Avery Bradley

For all the flack the Houston Rockets get, including regularly in these rankings, they reshaped their roster through the draft in stellar fashion. Jalen Green profiles as the best scorer in the draft and has the personality that is already winning fans over completely. Usman Garuba and Josh Christopher are raw but have all the tools to be solid members of the young core.

Then there is Alperen Sengun. After dominating the Turkish league, Sengun showed again in preseason that he could be an offensive force early and was a steal for the Rockets trading back into the first round. That being said, Houston is still not quite ready to compete. They only brought in one veteran free agent (Daniel Theis, oddly enough). This year will be about internal development.

Ideally John Wall, Eric Gordon and Christian Wood are able to stay healthier than they were a season ago. Green may be able to snag Rookie of the Year after dropping some ridiculous scoring numbers on the opponent’s heads. After a dismal season sidetracked but the drama of trading two All-Stars, fun is a nice change of pace. Stephen Silas did not get a fair shake in his first season. This team will get to be molded in his vision.

Added: Evan Mobley, Ricky Rubio, Lauri Markkanen

Lost: Isaiah Hartenstein, Taurean Prince, Larry Nance, Jr.

Consistency is thought of as a necessity in terms of teambuilding. If nothing else, the Cleveland Cavaliers are consistently befuddling. They arguably drafted the player with the highest ceiling when they selected Evan Mobley with the third overall pick in the draft. Then they committed a combined $167 million to two players who overlap with his position in Lauri Markkanen and the returning Jarrett Allen.

Each move on their face can be defended. Markkanen’s contract is larger than most would like, but he can play with either big man on the roster. In his second year in the league, he averaged 18.7 points and 9.0 rebounds on .430/.361/.872 shooting splits. Since then, he has been sidetracked by injury and bad coaching, so perhaps a fresh start is all he needed.

Allen and Mobley take less explaining. Allen was a blossoming young star with the Brooklyn Nets and looked good in his partial season in Cleveland. Mobley is the type of big man the modern NBA is shifting toward. There is just too much going on for this roster to be successful soon.

Collin Sexton and Darius Garland both took solid steps forward a year ago, with the latter establishing himself as a future no-doubt starting point guard. The Kevin Love situation is not getting any better any time soon, with the former star reportedly rejecting buyout overtures. Cleveland remains messy, consistent as always.

After being one of the targeted jokes of draft night, the Sacramento Kings showed in Summer League exactly why they added Davion Mitchell to the fold. Even with two other lead guards on the roster, Mitchell immediately steps in as a force for change.

Mitchell is a bulldog from the point of attack on defense and brings a level of leadership that the franchise enjoyed from Tyrese Haliburton a season ago. Combined with the blossoming future All-Star De’Aaron Fox, the Kings employ a plethora of fun guards. After years of lacking an identity as a team, this three-guard system could be what changes the fortunes for the Kings going forward.

After re-signing Richaun Holmes, the Kings offseason quickly got quiet. Sure, they have been one of the teams linked to the Ben Simmons discussion. However, those seem to be going nowhere with Sacramento’s reticence to include either Haliburton or Fox in the deal. This could drastically change the composition of the team should they decide to adjust their stance. Until then this is the Kings squad hoping to end the longest playoff drought in the league. Luke Walton was said to not be on the hot seat following another lost season. However, as the historic streak extends the heat has to rise at some point.

For the first time in a generation, the San Antonio Spurs are entering a season without any realistic expectation of challenging for the postseason. Out the door went veterans Rudy Gay, DeMar DeRozan and Patty Mills to be replaced by Joshua Primo, Joe Wieskamp and Zach Collins. The development of young talent has moved to the forefront officially for a team that is long overdue to pursue that strategy fully.

Added: Devonte Graham, Jonas Valanciunas, Trey Murphy III, Tomas Satoransky, Garrett Temple

Lost: Steven Adams, Eric Bledsoe, Lonzo Ball, James Johnson

Coming into a season with some amount of pressure, the New Orleans Pelicans have done their best to reshape their roster. Despite the pleas from Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball has been sent to the Chicago Bulls. Although many thought the contracts of Eric Bledsoe and Steven Adams were immovable, they have both found new homes.

The Pelicans have placed their trust in the hands of first-year head coach Willie Green to fix the culture that was bungled a season ago by Stan Van Gundy. In place of the departed starters are Jonas Valanciunas, Devonte’ Graham and expected internal development. The bench has been revitalized with the additions of Tomas Satoransky, Garrett Temple and rookie sniper Trey Murphy III.

For the Pelicans to succeed this season a few things need to go right. Valanciunas needs to space the floor at least enough to keep the defense honest. Nickeil Alexander-Walker will need to develop into the starting point guard in his third season, as he has shown flashes of doing already. Coach Green will have to gameplan a respectable, balanced offensive and defensive game plan.

Ultimately, though, this comes down to the two young All-Stars. Brandon Ingram needs to recommit to being the solid defender he was with the Los Angeles Lakers. Zion Williamson needs to continue his progress as an All-NBA talent. The path to the play-in is murky for the Pelicans, but the goal remains the same.

After trading away their first-round pick a year prior to bringing in D’Angelo Russell, the Minnesota Timberwolves experienced a mostly quiet offseason. They made some tweaks on the periphery of the roster, bringing in Taurean Prince and Patrick Beverly to fortify the bench. With a full offseason of head coach Chris Finch establishing a plan, the Timberwolves finally appear to have some level of continuity.

It would be tough to imagine a more complicated year than the one faced by Karl-Anthony Towns and D’Angelo Russell a season ago. They barely overlapped on the court due to injuries and pandemic issues. The organization underwent the midseason transition of hiring a coach away from another team. For a team with the Rookie of the Year runner-up and two former All-Stars, the potential is there for a quick jump.

After Finch took over, the Timberwolves posted the 17th best offensive rating the rest of the way. Towns averaged 25.6 points, 10.4 rebounds and 4.8 assists on .479/.380/.842 shooting splits. Anthony Edwards was not far behind at 23.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game. Russell and Malik Beasley combined to appear in just 28 games over the stretch, showing that there is plenty of room for growth. If the Wolves can finally be healthy (or possibly trade for Ben Simmons), there is a bright future ahead.

The Charlotte Hornets had the kind of draft a developing young team needed to have. Even if it is not one that necessarily portends an immediate leap to the postseason, this was a good summer for the team as they continue to build the roster around Rookie of the Year LaMelo Ball. Rather than taking finishing 10th as a sign that they had moved forward enough, the Hornets added plenty of young talent to build upon their promising season.

After years of spotty big man play (mostly due to the inconsistent health of the recently departed Cody Zeller), Charlotte invested down low in triple. They traded for Mason Plumlee on draft night, adding a veteran presence who had arguably his best season a year ago in Detroit. They drafted JT Thor and Kai Jones, talented prospects who will need time to realize their potential.

Beyond the big men, the Hornets added more depth to their offensive attack. Kelly Oubre Jr. is a solid wing addition who should flourish next to Ball. James Bouknight was one of the highest risers in the draft process and after sliding on draft night adds a scoring punch off the bench. Ish Smith is a solid veteran presence and has played almost everywhere. The Hornets are better than they were a season ago and they did not compromise their future to get there.

Lost: Tristan Thompson, Evan Fournier, Semi Ojeleye, Kemba Walker, Carsen Edwards

Figuring out the Boston Celtics projection for the season is no easy task. On one hand, they have two young All-Stars in tow and re-signed the heart and soul of their team. They moved on from Kemba Walker and Tristan Thompson, neither of whom will be missed too much for a team that drastically underachieved a season ago. Looking at things from another perspective, the team has a coach getting his first chance as a headman and a General Manager who until five months ago was a coach under consideration for being fired.

Ime Udoka has a sterling reputation and has been on the path to becoming a head coach for years. Brad Stevens is quickly undoing some of the mistakes made during the latter stages of Danny Ainge’s run. There is reason for optimism. However, the additions they made do not exactly build on that optimism. Al Horford is a respected veteran and was better last season than he was the year before with the Philadelphia 76ers. Before Josh Richardson moved on from the Miami Heat he had the reputation for being an up-and-coming 3-and-D wing. Stops with the Sixers and Dallas Mavericks have sullied his reputation, but there could be something there.

Boston should rebound and make the postseason after adding quality veteran talent to compliment Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Should, unfortunately, tends to be the keyword that gets many a franchise in trouble.

Added: Sam Merrill, Santi Aldama, Ziaire Williams, Daniel Oturu, Jarrett Culver, Carsen Edwards, Kris Dunn

Lost: Grayson Allen, Jonas Valanciunas, Justise Winslow

The Memphis Grizzlies have quietly chosen a direction this season that is a subtle shift that could ultimately make all the difference when building around Ja Morant in the future. Despite making the postseason this year, the team decided they are not further along in their development than that would indicate. This summer they committed to potential and youth, taking chances at a homerun swing.

Ziaire Williams is something of a project player coming out of a messy year at Stanford, but his potential is through the rough. Santi Aldama is going to take some time to contribute in a meaningful way on the floor. Jarrett Culver is a former lottery pick getting a change of scenery to see if they can make something of him.

Last season was plenty of fun, despite Ja Morant missing nine games due to injury and Jaren Jackson Jr. being limited to 11 games in the regular season. They have built a culture of older than normal young players ready to put in the work and grind on both ends of the court. Continuing to draft and trade for players to fill out the core rather than rushing the process (like the team who passed on Ja Morant seems to have done) is a salient strategy, even if it takes time.

Added: Isaiah Jackson, Torrey Craig, Chris Duarte

Lost: Aaron Holiday, Doug McDermott

Another year comes and goes just to see the Indiana Pacers floating around the middle of the league standings. After another offseason of rumors of shaking up the core in place, the only players to move on are Doug McDermott and Aaron Holiday. The franchise is hoping that a change in leadership is enough to make them a stable playoff team again.

Clearly, there is a drastic upgrade in coaching going from Nate Bjorkgren to Rick Carlisle. Bjorkgren almost immediately lost the locker room and Carlisle is one of the most widely respected coaches in the league. Unfortunately, the roster is still inherently flawed, something that has yet to be addressed. Domantas Sabonis, Myles Turner, TJ Warren, Caris LeVert and Malcolm Brogdon is a starting five that should be good enough to get the team into the play-in and be average across the board.

Beyond that, the results are mixed. TJ McConnell had a very solid season last year and is now compensated with the expectation that that will continue. Chris Duarte, the team’s lottery pick, is just a year younger than Sabonis and Turner. Torrey Craig is a replacement-level veteran. For what feels like the last decade, the Pacers have been happy to be average and hope to break into the fifth seed range.

Sabonis was an All-Star last season for the second consecutive year (despite some pundits referring to him as the worst All-Star in history), posting a line of 20.3 points, 12.0 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.2 steals per game. Building around him and restructuring the roster is a much more logical step than whatever this season seems to be.

The Washington Wizards have completely reshaped their roster in the blink of an eye. It was a masterstroke by General Manager Tommy Shepard, turning Russell Westbrook and subsequent swaps into Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Spencer Dinwiddie, Montrezl Harrell, Kyle Kuzma, Aaron Holiday and Isaiah Todd. Add in drafting Corey Kispert just outside the lottery, and the Wizards are suddenly deep, talented and versatile.

Debating whether or not Bradley Beal should be satisfied with this sort of commitment is a thought exercise that will weigh on the minds of Wizards fans and executives throughout the year. Given the position that they were in going into the offseason, adding this much talent without compromising the future of the team is rather brilliant.

After making it back into the postseason last season, the Wizards should be a shoo-in to do the same again this season. Dinwiddie is coming off a rough injury but has proven to be more than capable of bouncing back from such before. Harrell was never a fit with the Los Angeles Lakers but has a reputation as a dynamic bench big. KCP and Kuzma were invaluable members of the Lakers team that took the championship home in the bubble. For the first time since John Wall began dealing with a myriad of injuries, there is reason for optimism surrounding the team in the nation’s capital.

After a season stuck in another country, playing road games every game of the season, the Toronto Raptors are back home. For the first time in forever, they are finally in a position where they can attempt to find some normalcy. However, there is a major change that pushes the bounds of what normal is.

For the first time since July 11, 2012, Kyle Lowry is not a member of the Raptors. Replacing a face of the franchise is never an easy task, let alone with the intention of remaining a playoff contender. Adding the fourth pick in the draft, albeit at a different position, is a great way to accelerate a rebuild. Scottie Barnes is a defensive dynamo that will immediately fit in with the hardworking culture with the Raptors.

In addition to Barnes is not the only new Raptor. Precious Achiuwa and Goran Dragic were brought over from the Miami Heat. Achiuwa is an intriguing young big man and Dragic is exactly the veteran guard the team needs. If nothing else, he is a solid trade chip too. Fred VanVleet, OG Anunoby, Gary Trent Jr. and Pascal Siakam are a promising core to build around. Now, finally actually getting to play at home again could get them back in the postseason.

Swapping out Garett Temple and Tomas Satoransky for Lonzo Ball is an immense upgrade. The same can be said for Al-Farouq Aminu and Thaddeus Young turning into DeMar DeRozan. Alex Caruso is not just a meme; he is an elite defensive guard that will make an immediate impact.

The Bulls decided at the trade deadline that they were ready to commit to winning with Zach LaVine. They traded away their future, including this year’s eighth overall pick, to bring in Nikola Vucevic. How with three former All-Stars and a blossoming young star in the fold the future is bright. Add in any sort of leap that Coby White or Patrick Williams may take and it is easy to see why there is finally optimism surrounding the team.

In terms of losses, Lauri Markkanen is the most notable. His tenure with the Bulls was uneven, to say the least, but turning his choosing to exit into Derrick Jones Jr. is brilliant. If this type of roster building continues under Arturas Karnisovas the climb up the standings should be clear.

During the offseason when Damian Lillard went to play in the Olympics, he made it abundantly clear that something needed to be done to make sure the team was competing at the highest level in the league. While he was not asking for a trade and wanted to win with the Portland Trail Blazers, changes needed to be made to put together a winning roster. Turns out, that change is Larry Nance Jr. and Cody Zeller.

Perhaps the change in coach will be enough to turn things around. Terry Stotts had been the only head coach that Lillard had ever known but was let go after another early playoff exit. Though Lillard recommended other options, Chauncy Billups has been brought in for his first opportunity as the leader of a team (notably not without controversy). This year has plenty of pressure heading into it and if the Blazers do not get off to a hot start the potential of a Lillard trade is never far away.

For the time being, fans of Rip City need only hope for health and success. It has been only two seasons since the core of Lillard, CJ McCollum and Jusuf Nurkic (before his injury) was the third seed in the Western Conference. This roster should be able to compete if it remains healthy. At this point, it has to.

Figuring out what the LA Clippers should expect this season is almost impossible. Kawhi Leonard has never been one to come back from injury any earlier than absolutely necessary, leading to the real possibility that he is out the entire season. Paul George had the most efficient season of his career, which is either a positive harbinger or worrisome if a dip is coming. The point guard rotation has been turned on its head and the Clippers will need Eric Bledsoe to return to his Milwaukee Buck’s form. Reggie Jackson remaining the kind of player he was during the postseason would not hurt either.

Now more than ever, the regular season for the Clippers is less than meaningful. Since George and Leonard joined the team, everything has been about the postseason and coming out on top. With Leonard out for the season, expecting a high seed in the playoffs seems unreasonable.

Betting on Jackson, Nic Batum and Serge Ibaka to carry that heavy of a load during the regular season on the way to home court in the first round of the playoffs feels foolish. However, Ty Lue has proven more than capable of getting the most out of the talent he has available to him. If any coach can get the Clippers through this season, it’s him.

Make all the jokes you want about the New York Knicks. They tend to get overhyped, and they were dismissed in the first round of the playoffs by the Atlanta Hawks. They spent considerably on adding to and locking in the roster that saw them rebuild their culture. However, it may finally be time for the jokes to stop about the Knicks.

Despite his postseason struggles, Julius Randle had a fantastic season. In his first season as a lead option, he made an All-Star game, an All-NBA team and won Most Improved Player. He posted a line of 24.1 points, 10.2 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game on shooting splits of .456/.411/.811. Randle even led the league in minutes. Of course, he was going to be burnt out and overmatched at the end of his first season in the role.

Evan Fournier and Kemba Walker join the team, infusing plenty of talent into the guard positions. Walker on his former max contract was too much of a risk with his health. On his significantly reduced contract, however, he should be an ideal complimentary piece. Fournier is a great shooter who will replace Bullock nicely. RJ Barrett and Mitchell Robinson are ascending young talents. After years of being dormant, the Knicks are finally back on the national stage.

What a run to end last season. The Atlanta Hawks made it all the way to the Conference Finals in Trae Young’s first playoff appearance. Young ascended to being one of the faces of the league with a heel turn for the ages in Madison Square Garden. After switching to Nate McMillan as the head coach, the potential for this team was finally unlocked. Now it is time for the next step.

John Collins, Clint Capela and Trae Young both received sizable offseason extensions. The Hawks swapped out Tony Snell for Delon Wright, adding a respectable backup guard into the mix. They brought in Gorgui Dieng to provide solid backup minutes behind Capela while Onyeka Okongwu recovers from surgery. Then in the draft, they took homerun swings on talent in Jalen Johnson and Sharife Cooper.

Expectations have skyrocketed for the Hawks after a surprising run through the playoffs a season ago. The nuance will be forgotten that the Sixers were without Danny Green and experienced an epic Ben Simmons meltdown (though it will never be forgotten by the Philadelphia fans). Now the Hawks will be looked at as a team that could make it there again. That still feels lofty despite watching it just happen. However, if De’Andre Hunter is healthy and continues the leap he appeared to be making alongside Young, Collins, Capela, Kevin Huerter and Bogdan Bogdanovic they will at least always be a threat.

With Jamaal Murray out for at least a majority of the regular season, the Denver Nuggets find themselves in a tough situation. They have the reigning MVP in Nikola Jokic and a star on the rise in Michael Porter Jr. Aaron Gordon, Will Barton and Facundo Campazzo are all back on the court. However, figuring out how to run their offense to its fullest without Murray remains the question on hand.

Switching from Paul Millsap to Jeff Green is an upgrade and will bring another dynamic on the offensive end. Nah’Shon “Bones” Hyland is an intriguing young prospect who may get shifted into a more prominent role quicker than expected due to the current lack of guard depth.

Jokic will be the story again this season. Last season he averaged 26.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, 8.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game with an effective field goal percentage of 60.2 percent. He will need to perform at a similarly high level to weather the storm without his right-hand man by his side. Porter Jr. will also need to step up. In his second full season, he averaged 19.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. His production dipped slightly in the postseason, but he showed flashes of being the third star they need him to be. Now he will have to do that far more often.

After a year struggling to get into the playoffs and falling just short, the Golden State Warriors are a trendy bounce-back pick this season. They have added two more lottery picks in Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody. Andre Iguodala is back for a reunion tour. The bench is slightly deeper with Nemanja Bjelica and Otto Porter Jr. along for the ride. That being said, it all starts with the potential big three.

Klay Thompson’s return date is still undetermined but when he does return the ceiling for the Warriors is once again contending for a championship. Draymond Green is an exceptional passer who runs the offense in a way that no other team can truly replicate. Of course, there is also Stephen Curry.

Curry led the league in scoring last season at 32.0 points per game. He added in 5.8 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 48.2 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from long range on 12.7 attempts per game. It was a joy to watch him perform at such a high level and seem to enjoy the game of basketball after a lost season the year before. Now the team has reloaded around him and given him another chance to compete.

For a team with not much roster turnover, there was plenty to talk about surrounding the Dallas Mavericks. Rick Carlisle and Donny Nelson left the organization after the revelation of the shadowy hand of Haralabos Voulgaris had an outsized influence in the organization. Then on the way out, Carlisle sandbagged the chances of his assistant (and Luka Doncic friend) Jamahl Mosley taking over, instead endorsing Jason Kidd. Kidd would be hired amid outcries. Kristaps Porzingis trade rumors and plummeting value were a talking point earlier this year, but now that feels like an eternity ago. So why so high?

Because when this team is right, they are a dynamic offensive threat. They were the top offense in the league two seasons ago and dipped to eighth last season amid COVID and injury issues. Doncic is a perennial MVP candidate who posted a line of 27.7 points, 8.6 assists, 8.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game in a season some considered a down-year.

Adding Reggie Bullock and Doug McDermott to the team brings additional shooting, outlets for Doncic to kick out to. Moses Brown is a fascinating both Jimmy Butler and prospect who could provide some much-needed rebounding off the bench. Tim Hardaway Jr. is back after signing a much-deserved contract. If Kidd is able to get Porzingis back to his old form the Mavericks will be one of the toughest outs in the league.

Lost: Precious Achiuwa, Goran Dragic, Trevor Ariza, Nemanja Bjelica, Kendrick Nunn, Andre Iguodala

While it has been said by many that Kyle Lowry was born to play for the Miami Heat that does not make it any less true. He is tough-nosed and hard working. He brings a third All-Star into the fold for a Heat team looking to make a return trip to the Finals after being knocked out in the first round a season ago.

Bringing him in and extending both Jimmy Butler and Duncan Robinson did not come without loss. Precious Achiuwa and Goran Dragic were sent to the Raptors in exchange for Lowry. Kendrick Nunn, one of their other young prospects, left for other opportunities. The Heat decided the correct response was to double down on culture.

PJ Tucker, like Lowry, feels like his mentality was concocted in a lab by Pat Riley and Eric Spoelstra. He will never stop working on the defensive end and will give the Heat multiple people to throw at the likes of Kevin Durant in a playoff series. Markieff Morris has a knack for making big shots in the postseason and will not be relied upon to do too much more than that. Miami may not be the favorites to win the conference, but they will be a pain to play against.

Ever since he passed on the last-minute dunk he has been the target of ire. Doc Rivers and Joel Embiid heaped dirt on his Sixers playing career grave. While he is still on the team for the time being, at some point the bandage needs to be pulled off and a move made.

Figuring out what to make of the Sixers roster feels nearly impossible without the move being made. Considering any sort of trade is likely to drastically shift the starting lineup, this season is up in the air. However, even before a move, this team is made for regular-season dominance.

Joel Embiid was in the heat of the MVP race before suffering an injury. Embiid averaged a career-high in scoring (28.5 points per game) and added a line of 10.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.0 steals per game. He knocked down 37.7 percent of his 3-point attempts. Seth Curry, Tobias Harris and Danny Green round out one of the strongest starting lineups in the league. Once they finally get the trade figured out, the Sixers will be pushing for the top seed again.

The Utah Jazz finished last season with the best record in the league and appear to have come back with an even better roster to attempt to push their season on a little further. Mike Conley Jr. was their biggest pending free agent, and he has returned to the team. Rudy Gay and Eric Paschall are solid wings off the bench for the team as they look to fortify their roster.

Last season, the Jazz proved that they have the talent to be an elite offensive and defensive team. They finished the regular season fourth in offensive rating and third in defensive rating. They had the best net rating in the league by nearly three full points (9.0 vs. 6.1 for the LA Clippers). Rudy Gobert (Defensive Player of the Year) and Jordan Clarkson (Sixth Man of the Year) brought home some well-deserved hardware.

However, the Jazz only finished one game a

head of the Phoenix Suns for the top record in the conference before being eliminated in the second round by a Leonard-less Clippers team. The Jazz will have a chance at the top record in the regular season again but ultimately it all comes down to the playoffs. Proving that Gobert cannot be played off the court in the postseason has not gone well so far, but perhaps this is the year.

Coming off an NBA Finals appearance, the Phoenix Suns remain one of the teams to contend with in the league. Chris Paul made his first appearance in the Finals and was impressive. Over the six games, he averaged 21.8 points and 8.2 assists shooting 55.0 percent from the floor and 52.2 percent from distance. Devin Booker cemented himself as one of the bright young stars in the league. The best part of the run was getting to see just how promising the young players on the roster are.

Deandre Ayton was one of the most debated No. 1 picks in recent memory but proved well worth it this season. He was a double-double machine, grabbing 13 in 22 games. Cam Johnson and Mikal Bridges showcased that they are the ideal 3-and-D wing prospects for a title-contending team. With a year of experience and some minor roster tweaks, the Suns should be even better this season.

Landry Shamet is a solid addition to add a bit of shooting off the bench. Elfrid Payton was overmatched as the starting point guard for the Knicks a season ago, but as the third guard off the bench, he provides some solid insurance for injuries. JaVale McGee is the quintessential championship locker room veteran, so trusted that he was brought over to the Olympics. Despite Paul’s age, the Suns are just starting to rise.

The defending champion Milwaukee Bucks are the first of three teams with a claim for the top spot. Giannis Antetokounmpo staked his claim as the best player in the world with a performance in the NBA Finals for the ages. Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday are All-Stars in their own right. However, they still feel like they may be a step behind the two most star-studded teams in the league.

The biggest move of the offseason for the Bucks was bringing back Bobby Portis on a much cheaper contract than expected. They were not able to do the same with PJ Tucker, but the defense for the Bucks should still be a strength. Mike Budenholzer quieted some of his doubters and earned a contract extension by finally starting to adapt during a series in the postseason.

Nothing can take away from what the run to the top was for Milwaukee. Over six games Antetokounmpo averaged 35.2 points, 13.2 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.8 blocks and 1.2 steals per game. He put a stamp on the season with a 50 point, 14 rebound and five-block performance. He is becoming the face of the league and while they may not be number one on this list today, it is not hard to imagine them getting back there again by the end of the season.

In one of the most drastic roster turnovers in recent memory, the Los Angeles Lakers parted ways with 11 players that were on their roster at the end of last season. Only LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Talen Horton-Tucker and Marc Gasol. After trading for Russell Westbrook, the Lakers went on a spending spree that filled their roster with veterans and shooting.

Finally, James will get to play with Carmelo Anthony. Trevor Ariza, Kent Bazemore, Dwight Howard, Rajon Rondo and Wayne Ellington have returned for another tour of duty with the Lake Show. However, the two young players added to the roster may be the most intriguing.

Malik Monk finally started to come into his own last season for the Charlotte Hornets. In his fourth season, Monk posted career highs in points per game (11.7), assists per game (2.1), 3-point attempts per game (5.0) and 3-point percentage (40.1). Now he will be spotting up alongside three All-Stars, feasting on open looks. Kendrick Nunn has been up and down since getting COVID-19 in his rookie season, but he had big moments along the way for the Heat and will be a sparkplug off the bench during a long regular season. Even if the Lakers are one of the older rosters we have seen they should be considered one of the favorites to win it all.

Needless to say, the Brooklyn Nets are absolutely loaded. Prior to being derailed by injuries four months ago, the Nets looked to be the best team in the league. Even with Kyrie Irving and James Harden sidelined, <a href=https://hoopshabit.com/2021/09/12/nba-power-rankings-preseason-predictions/"https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/duranke01.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener" ref="nofollow">Kevin Durant was a toenail away from knocking out the Milwaukee Bucks and potentially winning a championship. Alas, last season was not meant to be.

This season, however, the Nets are somehow even more formidable. They did great work in the draft to add a big man (Day’Ron Sharpe), a bucket getter (Cameron Thomas) and a 3-and-D wing (Kessler Edwards). Paul Millsap gives them optionality off the bench down low, as does the returning LaMarcus Aldridge. Patty Mills has been an essential piece to a championship machine before and could be fitting into that role again this season.

There were hints last season that the Nets could be the type of overwhelming freight train that demolishes the rest of the league. After the trade for Harden, the team went 42-18, the third-best mark in the league. During that time period, they had the best offensive rating in the league (118.1). Also during that span, Irving, Harden and Durant missed a combined 75 games. With any sort of relative health, the rest of the league will be left in their dust.
